This was wonderful. Thank you Philippa! The question I still have is about miscarriage. What did women do in the days before D&Cs? Any tissue left behind could have been dangerous, yes? Did women die post-miscarriage or were there things that midwives could do to fully evacuate a uterus of remaining tissue? This is great women's bottom-up history. Please interview her again and bring us more bottom-up history. I love monarchs & other high-status person history as much as the next guy, but we need more of this!

My 12 Great Aunty Rose Lock lived until 86 in Tudor times. 😊 Her father Sir William Lock my 13 great grandfather also passed away 70. Pretty amazing for then especially being Protestant’s after Henry & Edward passed. Mary became queen as we know and my aunty & her family fled to Antwerp and came back when Elizabeth was in power. 😊

This was a magnificent episode. Thank you so much for presenting the lived lives of real human beings- who are just like we are. Social history and the history of material culture is far more important than the sensationalized BS of historical fetishized “ Great man “, warfare and political history we are usually fed .

I learnt a lot in this discussion. Really interesting. I do remember the vegetable Mandrake being used as an abortive remedy for an unwanted pregnancy in a movie.

They didn't do human dissections, but surely any butcher could have told them that you never find a cow or an ewe or a mare with their uterus going walkabout.........

Not sure which Bible you were reading. There is nothing in God's word where women were created wet etc etc. that I have seen. Please provide book, chapter and verse regarding this. It can then be fact-checked.

I'm not sure to what you are referring to here but I'm sure neither myself or Lesley referred to Henry VIII being alive in the 1580s
