TheTestingGrounds That’s cause Malcolm Mclaren kicked out Glen Matlock and replaced him with Sid Vicious because he had a cooler image. But Mr. Promoter forgot that Glen wrote all the songs and Sid didn’t write anything. He just looked good. So that’s why they imploded and there’s no follow up album.

At a distance of 40 years or so, you can see how groovy the group actually is. I was 15 when this single came out and of course we all loved it because it was huge fun, and a world away from all the dreary prog rock that older lads at school liked, adn some of the sillier stuff then in the UK charts. For us lot, who liked Tamla Motown, the Beatles, reggae and glam rock when we were young, thing shad got sooo serious in music. This stuff was a fantastic outrageous celebration of transgression. Steve Jones was an impeccable rhythm guitar player, and Matlook and Cook a genuinely great pop rhythm section. John was John of course. Never my favourite group of the era, nevertheless it cannot be denied that they blazed a trail and rocked!

Matlock was too soft for these guys in 76. On the other hand, they over did it with the attitude, forgetting they were the greatest rock and roll band in UK at the time. They could easily have continued for several years w Matlock if they just let him be the old school rocker he was, and still is.

We all have our vices and weaknesses. One of my very guilty pleasures is concert video footage and has been since the late 80's. As I am typing this, I thank God that these four guys were video taped playing their music here AND decades later, someone posted this performance on a public video platform called "You Tube." Thank God Sex Pistols were videotaped with BOTH Glenn and Sid. God care for Sid's addicted tormented soul. In hundreds, if not thousands of years from now, many of these same bands and solo artist's music will STILL be played for people to deal with their miseries. Sex Pistols are one of them and are that special. For the love God, hopefully these videos too will still be available to watch.

Steve Cook. Why has no-one recognised that drummer? He's amazing. Always on the beat. Cook hold's it all together. Great drummer. As for Steve Jones.... I was not born then but that track "Paradise Place" shows some supreme ability. Of course John McKay is the best guitarist who grew-up in the 70s and invented the Banshee sound that everyone copies.

Paul Cook was a very rudimentary drummer. Nothing exceptional. He did his job. Steve Jones on the other hand was no Jimmy Page, but came up with some very good licks, and was very effective for the Pistols.

You can be as outrageous as you want, without a good band it's going nowhere. Cookie and Matlock were a rock solid rhythm section, it was an absolute crime getting rid of Matlock. With Vicious they became a stunt band, all style and no substance. Matlock might not have had the stage presence of Vicious but he's a bass player, they're usually in the background. They already had one of the greatest and charismatic rock frontmen of all time, they didn't need a talentless junkie sideshow.

This is still pretty raw and abrasive now. For your average Northerner tuning into Granada TV in 1976- and I think this might have even been before they were signed- it was probably fucking terrifying. My favourite thing about Uncle Johny is the 1st 2 lines of lyrics he ever wrote were: I am an antichrist, I am an anarchist. Didn't even rhyme, but right from the get go: Not a single fuck given. Greeenday, Good Charlotte, ect. are exactly what they themselves have admitted their music as being: pop-punk. If that's what they want to do, if thats who they want to be, then that's fine..as long as they have no illusions about what they really are. This band, this marauding, angry, chaotic group of outcasts and misfits: THIS was one aspect of the punk, or punk-rock movement. Ithink the crux of what secures the Sex Pistls's place in history is that, regardless of the perception of angst and rebellion in rock'n'roll of the 1950s (Elvis) and '60s (Beatles, and especially The Who), the Sex Pistols married the amplified musical assault with Johnny's snarling rage in a way that can never be outdone.

Johnny wanted Sid in the band because he felt that the others were sort of against him because Steve, Paul and Glen were all friends before they met Johnny. Johnny got Sid into the band so he would have someone he could trust in the band. And yes, Glen did like ABBA, but surprisingly, so did Sid.
