The unedited interview and full version of Chant from "Check It Out", a Tynes Tees show from 1979. John Lydon famously storms off.

Lydon’s wife has Alzheimer’s. He loves her very much and is devoted to taking care of her. He wants to keep her home, not send her to some kind of nursing home. He’s a good man. He’s an excellent example of not judging a book by its cover. God bless him.

But he was "selling out", by 1) Saying PiL (the clue is in the name) is a company not a band. 2) Going in for the experimental music that Lydon had explictedy deride during his time in the Pistols. It's really not 'rocket science' to understand, just more like 'cognitive dissonance' if you can't.

¡¡AT LAST!! the full version!!! The program went for cheap controversy here. Ridiculously wanted Rotten and the rest of the band to fall into the game after they show that tv footage, doing a gesture that had a lot to do with the Pistols and "punk" widowers who didin´t like at all the new path that John Lydon took with Public Image Limited. It's sort of funny when Angelic Upstarts guitarrist talks trash about Rotten and "what punk suppose to be", when PIL was (if we are gonna speak in those terms) way more "punk" than them, especially for going foward, doing different types of music. A. Upstarts are just decent and important to the skinheads, but it's the same kind of thing all the time, they where just in the middle, way more conservative and uniformed musically. Not that relevant at all, just a consequence of early british punk and what Pistols with others originated. Even Sham 69 were better.

Amazing clip.. great to see the walk out in context...make sense now...poor journalism there, just a hope for a slagging match....the upstarts were very shortsighted... saying PIL were crap....Metal Box still stands the test of time...masterpiece, what have Angelic Upstarts contributed as pieces of musical art and influences...jealousy is a very thorny subject.

"You have been awkward this whole evening and we have been as pleasant as we could be to you". That line tells you everything about her understanding of artists. And the smugness of that guy. Jesus Christ, that was painful to watch.

There's an hilarious take on Pil's Check It Out debacle, entitled 'BBC1 'Royal' Continuity '78 (Spoof) '. Starts at 1.45. The channel does a lot of original satires on Seventies popular culture.

1980 just around the corner....Newman , Ultravox, Spandua Ballet, Depeche Mode...what a dead end that scene post punk scene was. The punk think was, the new wave is the music I love but they were going no where here.
