Cook, Jones and Matlock were always the heart and soul of that group and always very well respected by their peers too. Not sure if they would've lasted much longer even with Matlock and not Sid as they were a ticking timebomb with Malcolm running the show and Johnny being Johnny.

@@Peppers19781978 Yeah, I think so too. With Malcolm it was conquer and divide, and Johnny could be a pain in the ass too, so I think this whole thing would have exploded anyway.. And for a guy like Johnny it was probably for the best cause now he could pick and choose his own bandmembers, just like Bowie did after the suicide of Ziggy. He could now choose whatever musician he wanted, and whatever music he wanted to explore. So did Johnny with PIL. Many different members, many different sounds.. And it's the same for Paul and Steve, they can pick & choose and make some great music..!

When Swindle album and film came out in the late 70s, McClaren made out that Paul couldn't read or write. I remember watching that film thinking 'poor-guy' probably hasn't got a clue what's going on. It's obvious that the persona that McLaren invented was the exact opposite of Paul, who is clearly an intelligent guy.

Good Interview! Good questions! Cook is the backbone of the Pistols! His powerful drumming anchored the whole thing! He let Johnny do all the talking and didn’t talk much. I always loved his drumming! No Pistols without him! And Jones huge wall of guitar sound was the other half! Cooks really a smart and sensible bloke. I always liked him the most along with Matlock who wrote most of the songs.

John always wants to take the credit for the band but Jonesy’s guitar was the real identity of the band. As for the drums, Paul’s opening bash on Pretty Vacant is the best ever intro to a record. Makes me proud to have been a ‘77 punk and still to this day get that same thrill every time I hear it.

Steve and Paul basically started the band, they were schoolboy friends. They enlisted Glen on bass then eventually John as vocalist. Also Steve nicked most of their equipment in the early days, so the Pistols had far better gear than their rival punk bands.

A fun interview 👍 Good to listen to Steve and Paul chatting. I saw them both at Guildford Civic Hall, along with Jimmy Pursey, at an Undertones gig, in the late 70s. There was a lot of trouble that night😂 Steve got head butted by an old school acquaintance that night (by a bouncer), he (the bouncer) was a nasty piece of work. Oh, and me and some friends almost got arrested later that night for something we didn't do. One of the coppers, who must have been about two years older than me (at most) kept calling me 'sonny Jim' ....I hope he's feeling better now😂

The record company or the shop got an English language professor involved, who said the naughty word had a long and noble heritage and everyone should keep their hair on. The record was displayed with and without a censor strip thereafter, which was all good publicity.

Steve is correct about the word bollocks. Some so called do-gooder raised a lawsuit when the album was released claiming that the word bollocks was a profanity and the album should be banned. It went to court and the Pistols won, the judge ruled that bollocks was a word that had been in the English language for centuries and was not a profane term.

The Pistols were vilified for dropping a few F-bombs on a UK evening news programme in 1976, it just wasn't the done thing and they became almost public enemy number 1 for doing so. As a Brit, I now see the F word being used on mainstream TV comedy shows for at least the last 20-25 years and nobody gives a shit, or those who do give a shit and find it offensive are completely ignored.

Advertisements for the record - Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols - have been banned by radio and television, but the record is now number one in the LP charts and has sold more than 200,000 copies. A record shop manager, Mr. Christopher Seale, was acquitted on four charges, under the 88 year old Indecent Advertisements Act, in a test case before Nottingham Magistrates. Recording the not guilty verdict, magistrates chairman, Mr Douglas Betts, told him: "Much as my colleagues and I wholeheartedly deplore the vulgar exploitation of the worst instincts of human nature by both you and your company we reluctantly find you not guilty." Mr Seale was arrested for displaying the LP in the record shop in King Street, Nottingham - owned by the company which releases the records. The court was told that despite requests to take the covers out of the window he built up a display measuring 9 ft. by 6 ft. Mr Seale, aged 25, claimed that he was threatened with the sack if he did not keep the display. Professor James Kingsley, the former Anglican priest and now head of the English department at Nottingham University, argued that the offending word meant "nonsense" and was not obscene. He said, "The word has also been used as a nickname for clergymen. Clergymen are well known to talk a good deal of rubbish and so the word later developed the meaning of nonsense." He said that he would interpret the title of the album as meaning: Never mind the nonsense, here's the Sex Pistols. Mr John Mortimer, QC, defending, said: "What do we want? Do we want blanks, asterisks and explanation marks which people can fill in with their own imaginations, or are we prepared and strong enough to support and tolerate, even if we don't approve, the strong Anglo-Saxon, realistic and vivid language? This is a word that has been used countless thousands of times in this country not just in the factories but in the corridors of law courts. It is part of life in 1977. One must consider whether there is a man, woman or child who does not know this word. One wonders whether a word which anyone can find in the dictionary which has been used since Bible times should be singled out for prosecution just because it is attached to a highly popular group of musicians." A charge against the Virgin Records managing director, Mr Richard Branson, of causing obscene material to be delivered to Mr Seale's shop was dropped.' (The Guardian, Friday, 25 November 1977). '...Policewoman Julie Dawn Storey noticed a Sex Pistols 'Never Mind The Bollocks' display in the window of the Virgin Record store in Nottingham and informed shop manager Christopher Seale that she believed the word 'bollocks' contravened the 1899 Indecent Advertising Act, placing him under arrest. Virgin Records boss Richard Branson hired high profile QC John Mortimer to defend the case. The trial was held at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Thursday November 24 1977. Johnny Rotten attended the trial wearing a safari hat. ...After winning the case, Branson took his team to Nottingham's Flying Horse pub to celebrate and the album would go on to sell more than 2 million copies.' Paul said they had limited time to set the gig up, and considering they were doing it to support the old hall, you can understand their haste. As Johnny was from that part of London too, why didn't he just offer his services? I can't really stand John now, he's become the very thing that he used to rant about. A media luvvy. Put a camera in-front of him and he goes into parody mode of the insolent teenager he used to be. Due to his age, he can't really carry that anymore. Steve and Paul are the real thing, down-to-earth and closer to what the group were trying to say back in 76-77.

In Australia, the Pokies becoming legal knocked out a lot of venues, no room for bands and a 'Gaming Lounge', and then the GST came in and you couldn't get paid without an Australian Business Number. It changed the live band scene a lot.

Matlock has always gotten along with them over the years. Has worked with them on various things minus Rotten. Jones has stated many times he regrets getting rid of Matlock. Cook has even stated Matlock was the main songwriter of the band, was the talent but the other three were too young and immature, he didnt fit the image they wanted. I however do disagree with Jones when he said the band could've recorded more albums had they not gotten rid of Matlock. I think the band was a ticking timebomb thanks to Malcolm and the ego and antics of Rotten. It was never meant to last I dont think even if Sid didnt join. Jones in the 2002 documentary Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols: "We were what we were. Who cares if he washed his feet? That was him. I'm sure I had things that bugged him". He also conceded that the band could have recorded more albums had Matlock stayed and they had not participated in the television interview with Bill Grundy."
