There are two additional problems with this particular sex strike that you didn't quite touch on. #6: People generally tend to pair up with like-minded partners, so this movement is mostly only going to inconvenience men who already agree with their female partners. You could argue that it might light a fire under some pro-choice men to be more actively political, but that then leads to the next problem. #7: This sex strike doesn't have any clearly defined endgame. It's pretty easy to say you're going on strike until a war is ended or a road is paved. But Milano's is proposing that women refuse to have sex until... what? Until these specific laws are repealed? Until no one opposes abortion anymore? Until there's an abortion clinic on every street corner? You might as well say you're going on strike until we've "solved racism"; there's just no way to define what counts as success.

One of the worst things politics does is get people to pretend complex situations are simple. I am pro choice, but I come to that decision because I understand that some times it's necessary. I would absolutely advocate for a law where by a woman who treats abortions frivolously is subjected to some form of program the same way an abuser of alcohol or drugs may be sentenced. Abortion is a disgusting thing. It's a tragedy. It absolutely should be something women try to avoid. But the option should still exist.

I fully agree, and it's why, for the longest time, I was pro choice. Now, with what so many pro choice people are doing and saying, I feel like pro life is actually the best side for me to take. In layman's terms, if I can rub one out, why should I care if I don't get any? Besides, me getting sex will never be more important than my principles, so a sex strike wouldn't make me agree with you. As noble as the intentions may be, it's impractical, wouldn't work, and, as stated in the video, is more than a bit offensive to men and women alike.

Hey @Counter Arguments, I have a few thoughts/questions. Premise #1 Unanimous participation is essential. Question: When have we ever needed unanimous participation to enact policy or social change? Premise #2 Will have no effect on powerful women. Question: Dose it need to effect all powerful women or just some powerful women? Premise #3 Can only effect actions, not beliefs. Question(s): Aren't the actions, i.e. outcomes, of policies or social changes the determining factor as to weather or not they are effective? furthermore, wouldn't the embracing of social changes indicate a shift in beliefs of the population in question? Premise #4 Its an insult to both sexes. overall I tend to agree with this premise, that it is insulting to both sexes to imply that sex is a serve provided by women for men and not a mutually beneficial agreement between two consenting individuals (adults). However there dose seem to be an implication that all men are more socially conservative than women, and thus would not be ok with pro-choice legislation or social changes being enacted. Question: What responsibilities do men have to curve the need for abortions? Premise #5/conclusion: Not a smart way to protest an abortion ban It seems that this argument is framed in a way that would imply getting attention in this manner, while effective, is not what we ought to do. So what would you consider to be a smart way to protest an abortion ban, if at all? I would love to hear your thoughts on this, thank you.
@jrAndThings5 жыл бұрын
Yet another wonderfully articulated point. Well done
@mjsambo94185 жыл бұрын
I only have disagreement with #3 of your points in your relation to “changing” the abortion laws vs changing of beliefs. I will say as someone who is pro-choice: the legal argument why abortion should not be illegal is that defining life in the womb by a religious metric (which applies to almost all of pro-life supporters) should be unconstitutional because it infringes on separation of church and state. Furthermore, how we define life in the womb on a legal level should be done under an objective scientific basis, not a religious one. The hope is for religiously motivated people to come to acknowledge, while it is completely okay to hold your own religious beliefs on the topic of life and abortion, your religious belief should not and cannot be applied to legislature on a topic of secular human rights. It’s not a matter of changing the persons beliefs, it’s a matter of upholding what should be constitutional law. So the strike, although it has its other issues as you pointed out, is not about changing the people’s beliefs on abortion but rather changing the law to become secular and constitutional once again. Other than that, good and interesting video.

So if states change how they define life couldn't they get around R v W like I believe in Texas if u kill a person who is going to have a baby it a double murder
@nicholasmacneil65245 жыл бұрын
I mean.. I don't think there is a significant difference between a baby minutes before or after birth, but abortion laws in canada do. now I don't know where the line is to be drawn but I think most people can agree at the very least that "at birth" was not a time chosen after rigorous scientific study and meditation on ethics. maybe if you need to manually dismember the fetus for it to be small enough to be removed, maybe, that's too late to be anything other than murder. I may be a catholic, but I don't think that has a lot to do with my distaste for killing.

The best option would be for the sex strike to be until the pro-life legeslation is repealed, but there will still people attempting to take it down. Will the strike continue until there are no people who want abortion rights to be banned?

To compound on point# 1; the political alignments of couples tends to align. Not always, but often. So the result in this example is women denying sex to their male partners who probably already agree with them on abortion rights. It seems like the opposite of a persuasive move since, by design, it will be failing to target the people whose minds these activists would actually want to change.
@FlapMeister5 жыл бұрын
Being conservative does not equal being pro life. The political discussion encompasses a lot of different topics. Two people who are republican can have vast differences of opinion about many topics. This is a problem of a two party system. In other words: a pro choice person may vote republican, leading to anti abortion legislation. A person may not care that this is a consequence, until his wife won't have sex with him.

There is one more point you didn’t completely address: a sex strike by female pro-choice-activists will mostly affect their male partners - which, at least in most cases, probably are pro-choice themselves. Something no one really brought up on the stream, maybe because it was overtly obvious, but isn't the very fact that the idea was first conceived (to out knowledge) in a comedy kind of point to the idea that the whole thing is slightly absurd?

Good, Milano is doing exactly what pro-life people want, pro-life women won't listen to her because they are with their pro-life husbands or boyfriends, and on top of that it's showing that Milano and her fellow pro-abortionists has their autonomy and are clearly making a CHOICE there .. one of the many choices pro-life people kept telling them they have over the year.

To be fair, a driving strike until speed limits are raised could still work (if enough people were on board) with the damage it would do to the economy by reducing the flow of goods and services and capital considerably. The only ones that need to be affected are the people in power- not the entire opposition. Still, the choice of this 'cutting of your nose to spite your face' strategy is not the ideal course of action unless one wants to maximize that 'ironic punishment' aspect.

This is the most Ludacris idea I have ever heard of. How do people take her seriously? That is more punishment for the women than the men

I've been saying this for years "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime," the crime being unprotected sex and the time is pregnancy or being responsible, this is a no-brainer...

I doubt it. The abortion debate already had all of the attention it needed, especially since the pro-choice side is the mainstream perspective. If anything, Alyssa Milano was preaching to the choir, not gaining extra attention that wasn't there before. I highly doubt her call for sex strikes made anyone think "wow, now I suddenly for the first time in my life want to support pro-choice policies".

I don't understand how so many people skip over the fact that Kay Ivey is the WOMAN who signed the abortion bill into law! Without even formulating an opinion on abortion, I immediately lose sympathy for Prochoicers when they complain about the abortion bill being a testament to the "oppressive patriarchal system" we live in. It's such a pathetic and oversimplified notion I find myself arguing in favor of prolife even tho I'm not even entirely on the pro life train

I think that anyone trying to do sex strikes ends up screwing things up in the bigger picture, especially if it has to do with women’s rights. The reason why is because rather than having people stop doing what they’re doing because they genuinely care, you’re instead having them stop just so they don’t miss out on sex. And, if you’re doing it for something like women’s rights, you kind of defeat there purpose by treating yourselves like objects for sex.

"The idea of the sex strike is that until women are given autonomy over their own bodies they ought to withhold access to the reproductive system from the men who are pursuing anti-abortion laws. It is an interesting theory, though one with a few obvious flaws. For one thing, the kind of women ready to stage a sex strike are unlikely to be sleeping with the kind of men who need educating in this matter." Robert Shrimsley, FT

Something more effective would be if, in protest, large numbers of women left the state, got sterilized, and came back. Obviously this is very drastic and irreversible, so a lot of women wouldn't want to do something like this. But it would definitely get politicians' attention (For those that don't know, Alabama, as a state, is really against the idea of not having kids.) So removing the ability to get pregnant in the first place would be possibly the biggest incident of malicious compliance in the US. And would technically be legal, since no one left for the purpose of getting an abortion.
