Do you agree that the "golden age" singers like Caruso, Gigli, Ponselle, Lauri-Volpi, etc. were better singers in general than the famous singers today (Kaufmann, Netrebko, Alagna, Florez, etc.)? Also, do you find it very useful to spend time listening to the golden age singers rather than listening to the modern day singers? Thanks.

Hello Jacob, I would say that the "golden age of singing" is a very relative term. I believe that the first time you hear an opera, recorded or live that you tend to hold that as your "standard." As far as listening to certain singers over others, I would say that some singers happen to fit a certain composer, some a specific role. Personally, I would listen to everyone. With old singers, you learn tradition and bel canto style. New singers tend to bring a lot more nuance to roles. I would never compare old vs. new without weighing a number of things. First and foremost, does it move you? If it does, then it's good. Some people love certain singers or others. I attribute this mainly to personal preference. Another factor to consider is the old recordings were studio recordings. They could repeat, fix, and tweak things. If it was an old live recording, you don't really get a feel of what the voices sounded like in the hall. I have more to write so I'll split it into 2 comments...

Those old recordings had singers who had done the role many times and had mastered a few things within their role. Nowadays it seems that everything is recorded. A role debut (for every singer) is going to be different than their 10th, 20th, 50th, performance. I will say this, a lot of the old singers if they were starting today would have a totally different sound and might not even be hired. Every era of singing has a certain style to it. Singers of the 30's sound completely different than those from the 60's. So I guess in a nutshell I would say listen to everyone to appreciate your favorites. No singer is perfect. It is their imperfections that make them unique. You don't listen to Sutherland for diction. Callas did weird things with her vowels in her middle voice. You could do this for every singer you hear. If you get goosebumps. The singer has done their job, regardless of their technique, flaws, acting, or passion. It's a very long winded answer but I hope it helps. :)

+EXIT STAGE LEFT Hey, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. I'm 18 years old and currently studying with a private teacher whom I really have confidence in. I know for a fact that opera is my passion, but I'm still so undecided on whether or not I want to do it as a career. I have heard from other singers that its pretty grueling, and that some wished they took a safer choice in college. I'm not letting other people's experience decide my fate, but it definitely is discouraging and I feel like I'm in a constant tug of war between pursuing opera and pursuing a "safer" job choice and doing opera on the side. Your advice is really valuable to me. I would love to have a chat with you over email or Facebook or something in the future. Thank a lot!!

+jacob lahr here's the deal, in this new economy, NO job is safe. If that's the case, you might as well do what you love right? I would take business courses in addition to music (even if you audit) this way, becoming self employed won't be so jarring. Since you're young I will tell you this...no one has the same job for their whole lives so don't feel any pressure to map out your entire life right now. Just learn as much as you can about all that you can. If you have more questions feel free to message my Facebook page. All the best!!!
