Thank you! We ordered guineas this spring by mail. We received 17 but only 8 have survived. We lost many when they first arrived -- I had a heat lamp on them but it seemed like they weren't smart enough to go under the lamp and were on the other side of the box when found so I guessed they got cold. I ended up moving them into a smaller box and no casualties after that. Then when they got bigger and I started to let them free range we lost one. Anyway, I was curious about their sex and found your video. Blessings!

Hi kwhite, sorry you lost that many. That is difficult. Guineas are stupid and good at getting themselves killed, like turkeys, unfortunately. We have had luck putting them in with a chick. The chick teaches them what to do. Then you have the issue that they always want to be around chickens. 😂 Silly birds. 😂 Good luck with your guineas!

We had a pair of guineas when I was little. I don’t remember a whole lot about them besides them being really loud and not very smart. The female actually got hit by a car. It wasn’t like we lived on a busy street either, it was very sad because after that, the male sat up in a tree and just cried until the poor thing mourned himself to death. We were told that they bond for life and he wouldn’t take another mate. I guess that bad experience had blinded me to the idea they could be useful. I actually never knew they were good for much other than noise so I have learned a lot here!!

Ok, we have 3 Guineas. I am fairly certain, based on your video, that our white one is a female. She has a two syllable call. She is the most vocal one. I haven’t heard the other two make noises recently. All three have the same physical characteristics though…helmet pointed backwards. Their waddles are very red though, which is kind of confusing me. But I’m sure I’ll hear the other ones soon. Thanks for sharing this!
@RenewedHomestead
@RenewedHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
The males can't make 2 syllables, so I would say a girl. The girls are far more vocal. If they are still young that helmet may not be fully developed yet, so that might be why their helmets still look similar. If the others are not doing a lot of vocalization, I would probably guess they’re boys, but if they are still young you might still need a couple of weeks to tell for sure.

@@RenewedHomestead this might be a tip for you. I looked up When animals attack on KZbin. To my surprise I seen a video about donkeys and people trading their guns in for a donkey as far as protecting their livestock. I said donkeys have a disdain for Foxes ,coyotes and dogs. If it's not a large pack according to that video the donkeys will drive them off or kill them.😂

Hi Darrell, thank you! We have been trying to decide between a Livestock Guardian Dog or a donkey. I have heard we can’t bring our dogs into the pasture if we have a donkey. Hi coolboy, have you ever had a lot of male guineas at once? They fight all the time and tear each other apart. That is why we had to process a few. We tried to give some males away but were not able to. It is no life to fight all the time and get beat up. Regarding the eggs, yes you can eat them, they are creamier than chicken eggs and good, but they only lay clutches a couple of times a year. They don’t lay like chickens. And last I checked male guineas don’t lay eggs. 😂 God’s blessings.

@coolboy5428 hi coolboy, they actually fight all year long, they tear each other up, and if you know anything about guineas being caged up like that would be awful for them. They like to wander. They cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. It is better for the flock to have less males when you have a lot of guineas. We currently have 10. Two are males and it is very calm and 0 fighting now, thankfully.

Hi Remy. We typically keep the birds separated. They all free range together, but in confined spaces the guineas tend to bully the other birds. They will chase them off and just be jerks to the others. We have had luck running our guineas in the barn at night, but one skittish Guinea can cause all of them to be that way, so just watch for really skittish and nervous ones if you want to keep your guineas up at night. I know many people just let them go wild so they decimate the ticks and chiggers. Guineas will always be a bit skittish. They are not typically a friendly bird. I hope that helps. Good luck!

Hi John, thank you! I have heard the buckwheat thing myself but it doesn’t sound like that to me either. Lol What I have learned and also witnessed is if there enough males and females they will mate with one, but if there are several males and only a few females or vice versa they will partner up with multiples. Does that make sense? We have more males than females right now (need to process some) and I have 1 female to two males. I can tell you when you have a lot of males they are louder and fight more. Hi Marsha, are they from the same clutch? The only ones we have seen fighting are the males, but it may be just them figuring out the pecking order so to speak. Do they get really violent or just picking on each other? If they are getting bad you could always try to separate them, if possible, by a see through barrier for a week or two and then see if it helps when you combine them. If it isn’t bad they will probably work it out. Some of our males are fighting right now because the hens have started to lay eggs. It is that time of year.

@RenewedHomestead
@RenewedHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna, how old are they? They are pretty stupid I am sorry to say so watch them with water. If the water dish is large they may drown. Scatter the food on the ground. Paper towels, though I hate the waste, is typically your go to when they are young. Also, make sure they are not on slick ground as it will cause leg issues. As they get older I would keep them in their permanent home for at least a couple of weeks. When you are ready to let them out, let one out at a time and then switch everyday for at least a week. That way they all return and know where home is. We keep them coming back to the barn by feeding them just a little bit at night. Do not overfeed them or they will not go eat bugs, and they will try to hang around their home to get more food. LOL I guess they’re not stupid when it comes to food. 😂 If you are planning on releasing them to just kind of do their thing, which a lot of people do, a lot of people feel that they are a expendable resource on the Homestead. Just plan on them probably dying fairly quickly because Kenny’s are not very smart, and they have a lot of enemies, unfortunately. That’s why we keep ours in the barn at night in their coop. I hope that all made sense. 🙂 I hope that helps.

@RenewedHomestead
@RenewedHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna, you will like the fact they are good guards for the homestead and they eat a lot of bugs, including ticks. They are not the tamest, and they are scared of everything. You can tame them some with food. Ours will come to us when we have food and they going to the barn at night because they get fed when they go in at night, but they are a really stupid bird. Our friend calls them our feathered idiots, lol, but we do appreciate the fact that they alert us to strangers on the property or predators. We actually had them warn us when a hawk flew into the barn, and they also protected our turkey from wild turkeys. We appreciate them for that, but they are still scared of us even though we have raised them. The males can get a little aggressive with each other, they just chase each other off from food. We haven’t had any of them really get into any kind of fight but they can be jerks to each other, they seem to be a little better if they grow up together though. They will kill their babies, so if you have a guinea that has babies you will want to keep them in together for a few weeks. They are from Africa, so they are not necessarily used to our humidity or climate. So what happens is the mama takes the babies out, they get wet, they get cold and they die, or they wander off and somebody gets them. So, if you do have keets from the mama you will want to keep them in with her until they are a few weeks old.
