I really hate how if a country is “not black enough” or “too advanced” or “too exotic” it’s seen as not part of Africa even though geographically they are part of the continent. Such as countries like Egypt, Seychelles, Mauritius, Cape Verde etc. It’s so annoying because Africa is such a diverse continent but non-Africans perpetuate this monolithic image of “What Africa is” , So when there are countries that are different from what Africa is perceived like they are subconsciously dissociated from the rest of the continent. *ETA*: Oh my goodness! Some of you have completely missed the point so let me clarify. I am not trying to claim Arabs, white South Africans and Indians as Africans! What I’m saying is that as long as a country is geographically part of the African continent it IS AN AFRICAN COUNTRY! Whether the people that inhabit there identify as African or not. Egypt is a country in the North of Africa. Seychelles is a country right off the coast of East Africa. Cape Verde is a country right off the coast of West Africa! So Africans and those of African descent explore the beautiful continent of Africa and all of its diversity (the islands, the deserts in North and Southern Africa etc. ) . Don’t let the locals or the muzungus make you feel like you shouldn’t be there.
@WillieFungo3 жыл бұрын
Seychelles and Cape Verde are very much part of "Africa". They are mixed, but retain a lot of similarities with the rest of the continent. Mauritius (excluding the creole island of Rodrigues) and lower Egypt have very little to do with the rest of Africa and should be considered fundamentally different places more similar to the Middle East and India. I don't know why some people use geography to water down the shared identity of equatorial Africa. People are not a landmass. People are shared history, genetics and culture. That's why Europeans don't call themselves "Eurasians" because they share a landmass with Asia. Unlike you, they value their unique identity.
@youme14143 жыл бұрын
@@WillieFungo Africa is a continent. There are other people from other parts of the world who made USA their home and are called Americans. @@djb.8507 I give you a practical example. While at La Digue on the Island Hopping trip, part of the buffet served was a certain beans variety which i saw there for the first time. In order to encourage me to eat it, the lady (a Seychellois) said to me: "I know you eat that in Africa cause i have been to Africa and i ate it there too." That statement got me wondering where we were at the moment. These are valid experiences as most of your people don't easily identify as Africans which is okay. Going through every comment to nullify or argue peoples experiences isn't necessary. You can do that when it is a perception but saying people did not experience what they did is not a good fight. On a good side, the racism stuff does not exist. We discovered Beau Vallon food on day 3 of our 5 day trip and we ate there every single day till we left. Got some takeaway too. The food was irresistible. Best shrimps i ever tasted. The island is a bubbling and youthful one. The immigration staff on our departure was probably in her early 20s. Unheard of in my country Nigeria. Your Island hosted the exiled Ghanaian Kumasi royalty before he returned home. I observed the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has a branch there which says a lot about the Nigerian presence there. Also met 2 basketball players who ply their trade there. @Danny Baronne I think the damage has already been done. As a Seychellois born and bred in Seychelles. This is my stance I am first proud of being a Seychellois this is normal its my country and will never change it for any other. I am proud to be of African, Asian, Malagasy and European descent. My African heritage is more prominent in the color of my skin, whereas my daughter has a skin tone totally different from me. Those that make her less or more, no it just make her human and Seychellois. We are also part of Africa. True we are not part of the mainland. My ancestors could hail from Any part of Africa but which part we don't know. Being from the African region we are Africans. Africa is not a country but is made up of different countries and all of them has their own culture or mixed of people. Seychellois are fortunate that we have a bit of every continent in us. That is our blessing. Like you said why will go to pay for expensive excursions when we can do that ourselves with no cost. With Covid most of us are stuck at home because of restrictions or because we are trying to avoid exposing our families who are vulnerable to the sickness. I've read these comments and I'm so surprised because I'm looking at my family pictures and to see the different tones of colors of my aunt, uncles my grandmothers and grandfather's I would like to know where is the segregation? Like any other our people are face with the same issues. My teachers where from. Kenya, India, Sri Lanka France and England. And my current teacher is chinese. My advice to the author of this video if you wanted to actually to see more Seychellois make some Seychellois friends look for a good guide and don't get stuck I the tourist attraction but come to our community and I'm sure your experience will be different. And by the way we work on weekdays so we mainly go out for fun on weekends.

I visited Seychelles from Nigeria in 2018 and stayed at Mahe but also spent time at La Digue and Praslin. It was lovely but I totally relate to this video. I felt a bit unwelcome starting from the Airport. I was especially upset when the black seychellois Immigration officer allowed everyone to pass through but stopped my new bride's bag to have it searched, without any good explanation. Not the best way to start a honeymoon. However, our rented villa and hosts were lovely and very accomodating. By day 2, ee ditched the exorbitant taxis and paid pennies for buses which allowed us to experience the real Seychelles

Hi Tayo, I‘m from Switzerland and I had a similar impression like you when I travelled to the Seychelles. It’s quite on the expensive side and you pay a lot for little service at times. The nature is amazing and I really like how much Seychellois are taking care of the environment. Two corrections to add: The market in Victoria is not only a tourist market. Seychellois actually buy their groceries from there. And the beach at Carana is not private. There’s an entrance on the side of the road - it’s a bit hidden tough.

I'm from Seychelles and I went to Geneva in Switzerland in October, the prices there compared to here were a bit similar but here is definitely expensive relative to the quality of services, and just to add, I really loved Switzerland the people were nice and the place was significantly cleaner than here, but all in all everything is going to be different wherever you go

I've been to both Seychelles and Zanzibar. Stone Town Is culturally very interesting and there are some great beaches in Zanzibar and very good food. But if you want to see what the real Garden of Eden would have looked like and witness the true beauty of nature the uniqueness of Seychelles will bring tears to your eyes. I've visited Seychelles twice ( Mahe,Praslin La digue ) the granitic formation are unique in the world, the untouched nature, the High mountains the jungle, the plants the multitudes of wild beaches just left untouched as It was 200-300, years agò. In Seychelles there are places where the human been Is Just a privileged guest in the mother's nature Kingdom. Why there aren't more Black people from the Mainland is probably because of Europeans come with Higher purchasing power I guess and most don't know about the place. I’ve been to Seychelles on three separate occasions and I can confirm that everything Tayo said in this video is true. It’s a beautiful country, and there’s no doubt about that. If it’s on your bucket list, please visit. You won’t regret it. But yes, classism exists, even among the locals. Racism yes. They can also come across as being unfriendly especially to black folks. You’ll notice white people being given priority treatment. I’ve been to Zanzibar as well and I still would choose Seychelles because I think it’s really just that gorgeous. However it’s not somewhere I would stay for too long being a black person.

It's Mostly expensive for tourist the locals have free health care and schools...which ever chooses to pay for private is entirely up to them... Food most people grow their food and keep their livestock and water is everywhere on the island most people uses solar panels to cut costs of electricity. If you are someone who wants to spend time eating in restaurant instead of cooking your own food then prepare to bring out the cash. Most locals are extremely friendly they will even offer to cook for you if you meet the nice ones go to the south part of the island ( beauvallon area north west area People are more in the modern mind set selfish a bit )
