It’s interesting you say that, I’ve always had the same outlook. I have a Charvel DK 24 with Seymour Duncan pick ups. They’re pretty hot. I am a big fan of the high distortion sound, I also have a 50s Gibson Les Paul standard, with burst bucker 1 and 2 pickups. Whatever I play the Gibson after the Charvel, I almost feel bad, because the pick ups are less high output, and it almost sounds less “cool” initially, until I listen to the sound quality, and realize that they Gibson always sounds so much better. I always think of the Charvel having hot Seymour Duncan pick ups as “sounding better” but when I’m honest with myself, I always come to this conclusion that the Gibson just sounds so much better as an instrument. The note clarity is better, the tone is warmer, full, and there is this beautiful harmonic/“colorful” sound that you get on the neck, that the Charvel does not have. It’s incredible. I think if you want high distortion, go with a quality humbucker that might not be super high output, and then just overdrive the amp to get quality and distortion. That’s what I’ve learned, but I’m not a pro or anything.

I like them both. The JB sounds a bit sweeter, smaller and more compressed on the overdriven sounds. I think I prefer the more open sounding BBP. Great to have so much choice available though. I've never changed the stock pickups in any of my Les Pauls, and they've had BB's, BBP's, 57's, 61's and 490's etc. They all sounded pretty good. Although I did have one Standard with BBP's that sounded more like a PRS! I did not like that 😁

The thing with the Gibson pickups is I always need to turn the tone control down to reduce that top end. You want some of that but not as much as the pickup is giving you, it’s just to shrill. The JB has just the right amount with a little more mids to punch through the mix. However the Gibson pickups are more dynamic so depending on how hard you pick you can really benefit from that
@DadRockAndGuitars16 күн бұрын
I agree that the Burstbucker Pro can get a little top end heavy at times and I do end up rolling the tone back or sometimes rolling the volume back a little takes just enough off. Some amps and tones need that roll off, and some don't (for me anyway). Thanks for watching and appreciate your comment 👍

I see so many comparisons between the BB pro and JB but nobody does the regular Bb2 compared to them. I think the Bb1/2 is more popular in general than the pros. I got a free JB and I’m considering throwing it in the bridge and leaving my BB1 in the neck, because it sounds so smooth and sweet.
@DadRockAndGuitars2 жыл бұрын
That's awesome that you got a free JB! Can't go wrong with a JB in the bridge. I haven't played the BB1 or BB2 yet, but definitely on my list to check out in the future. What do you hear as the difference between those and the Pros?

I had BB2; i prefer the BB pro. Just because with BB pro i can reach also heavy tones that i dislike a bit on BB2, but thats my ears and feeling. Tried many Di Marzio, i love them, but on my Les Paul i just prefer BB pro. I should get another guitar with super ceramic pickups on that.

I've never had luck with stock pups in any Gibson I've owned, although I've played plenty of Gibsons with terrific stock pups. In any Gibson I've owned I've changed the pickups numerous times till I settled on the JB/Jazz set which is perfect. The JB is made for a Gibson style guitar. Sounds great in strats too, but the real magic happens with mahogany setneck solidbodies.
@DadRockAndGuitars Жыл бұрын
The JB is definitely a great pickup! Glad you were able to find the pickups that work for you 👍 It can definitely be a bit of a journey. Which Les Paul do you have?
@angusorvid8840 Жыл бұрын
@@DadRockAndGuitars I don't own it anymore. I traded it to a friend for a Yamaha SBG 200 (a great SG knockoff), but back in the early to mid 90s I had a black Les Paul Studio with block inlays. The stock pups weren't happening so I tried a few pickups including a Duncan Distortion, which had too many low mids going on. Once I popped in an old JB I had used in dozens of guitars before it the thing came alive. The reason the JB worked so well in that ax is because the JB is centered around high mids. It balances out well in a middy instrument like an LP or anything mahogany. It works well in basswood also. It's crisp, has a lot of bite, and it's well balanced. I also love the Custom range, mainly the classic ceramic SH-5. But the JB I had in the LP oriiginally came stock in an old Holdsworth Charvel I bought used for $100 in 1989. Great guitar. Before the LP Studio it was my main ax. I removed the classic, handwound JB from the Charvel and tried it in about a dozen guitars and it worked great in all of them. It finally wound up in the LP. I lost the pup when I traded the guitar to a friend for the Yamaha I mentioned above. Anyhow, with a JB in an LP you can literally play any genre of music, any level of gain, or no gain at all, and get the job done. BTW the JB I'm talking about was probably produced in the late 70s according to the tech who worked on my guitars in the late 80s and early 90s. He was an expert on Duncans. He worked on guitars at Ace Music in Santa Monica where I had him work on dozens and dozens of my guitars. That shop was the first in the world to carry Seymour Duncan pickups.

Im looking to replace my 61 burstbuckers…will the monty orginal PAF’s sound similar tonely to the 61 BB’s…i hate the 61 BB’s (especially the bridge)..lacks flavour, super sensitive and theyre super unbalanced/uneven…the lows are very boomy, but the highs are just kinda dull treble? (Bad at describing tones). I was gonna go with something rock & roll wise like SD slash 2.0 alnico II pros (replacing the 61’s in my new 60s standard LP, i like a nice clean tone, but tend to mostly play classic rock). Jw if the montys would be more balanced (i know theyre also unpotted, only thing that worries me that they will similar to my 61 burstbuckers which i hate in general), and the SD Slash 2.0 are wax potted. Seems the montys have more high end and more clairty, but the slash 2.0’s have a creamy warmer tone..if it matters my LP is non weight relief (little over 8.5lbs), no coil tapping etc, basic wiring with orange drop caps and whatever else they put in 2023 60s standards. Any info on the montys in comparisson to the 61 Burstbuckers i currently got stock (which are hated by me & alot of people lol) if i should go with something like the monty PAF’s or will they have too similar of characteristics that im not going to like them, like i said the SD slash 2.0 seem safe but seem to be lacking some clairty / dynamicness, but not sure if thats cuz on these demos all these players shred lol im at like an intmermediate stage (also worried the unpotted montys may be too sensiteve/responsive, that im gonna really hear everytime i flub on a note, where as the wax potted may be less articulate but can kinda cover those mistakes a little better, but in a bad way? Lol) im truly not sure since ive never had the need to swap humbuckers before & looking to put something in my LP that ill look forward to playing some classic rock tunes thru my little Marshall Dsl 20c. Any help would be much appriecated..really wanna find a good set but hard to tell from youtube & i personally cant install pickups so i dont wanna keep forking over $ to my tech & ordering new pups. I understand its subjective to a point, but given my guitar, classic rock tones from an LP im chasing (have had an SG stock for 20 yrs and it sounds great, only repalce strings lol). Appricate any help in regards to the montys in comparison to 61 BBs & how they’d workout for an intermediate player who loves playing classic rock (still really like nice clean crisp bridge & a warm/full/cream neck). Thanks to anyone who has the time to chime in (and im not really on a budget..,around $500 is what ideally i dont wanan go past, since i plan on finding the pups i like & keeping them in my les paul). Thanks in advance

Not sure I'm going to be a lot of help since I don't have any experience with the pickups you mention. It does sound like you probably going to want something that is wax potted. For me personally, I really like the Burstbucker Pros. They have the clarity you talked about and are wax potted. The neck pu may not be as "warm and creamy" as your're looking for. I think they have plenty of character and sound great for classic rock. They blend really with with my Telecaster when recording. I've had mine in my LP for 7 years now and have no plans of putting anything else in. Not to add to the options, but people have mentioned in the comments on my videos that they really like the Seymour Duncan Saturday Nigh Specials for classic rock tones. I haven't played them, but might be worth looking at.

Liked your last vid - very clean & helpful… I have multiple guitars with different pickups & for different reasons… I watched your last vid because I recently just bought an LP with Burstbucker pros in it & had never heard them before…. I have watched countless vids over the years trying to decide on different pickups for different guitars etc…. & I think people lose sight or possibly don’t look at it this way when they are researching… No pickup is better or worse than another generally - they are all different sounding & have different qualities , & also sound slightly different in each guitar… Two pickups can be compared as a better or worse if you are after a particular comparison of of one has more gain, or more bass, or pick attack etc…. But it all comes down to what YOU want… Thats the part I think people lose sight of. If you like the particular sound of the BB say, but want more gain, then look at another similar sounding Humbucker with similar tonal characteristics but hotter …. A lot of the manufacturers put out specs on output high/ mid/ low etc etc…. The JB is a good pickup, it’s been used by many over the years, & so is the the BB pro….JB’s & Seymour’s can be very compressed in the mids , just like many EMG’s I have in my guitars… Great for rock & metal etc. Then there’s the Passive vs active thing…. Not meaning to rant here but trying to add, coz myself I am a bit of a gear / tone junky so she. Gone down the rabbit hole quite a few times…. I would say, find the sound you like - (Metallica, or Van halen, ZZ-Top) whatever, then research that guitar pickup sound / combo, then find out what about that ‘sound’ that works for you (scooped mids), or (maybe chimey highs), then go down that route of choosing pickups from various manufacturers that suit that…. Hope that helps man. As an example - I have a LP with BB pros coz of the versatility of sound & clearly defined pickups. I have an ESP Edwards ‘LP SUPREME’ with a Slash Seymour in it for fluid solos due to a nice mix of mid/ high, but compression. I have another guitar with EMG hetset due to the active bite & higher output…etc etc… the choice was made based on the characteristics of the pickup (what I wanted out of that pickup)to that guitar, not as a comparison from one pickup to another.
@DadRockAndGuitars Жыл бұрын
100% agree! No pickup is better, just different and depends on what you’re looking for as well as the rest of the signal path. I’ve tried a few different pickups just to see if one gives me something different that I prefer. I keep coming back to the BB Pros. I only have one humbucker guitar, so I need something that covers several times that I’m looking for and the BB Pros do that for me. It’s fun to try others and if I had multiple humbucker guitars, then I’d definitely go for some other options and expand the tonal pallet as you did. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! 👍

I've got my Gibsons with their Burstbuckers (two Les Pauls and an SG), and three guitars with the SD Hotrodded set. I'll put it this way - there's nothing that would motivate me to replace my BBs. I absolutely love them. However, I also absolutely love the SD sets. They have the added bonus of splitting really well. For a Gibson with BBs, I'd leave them be. For guitars that come with the SDs, they're awesome. For a guitar in need of an upgrade, the SD set is hard to beat. I also think they're more versatile, given how well they coil split. Tones? That's just so subjective and so dependant on the guitar, your end goals, but at the end of day, I think the Seymour Duncans are a bargain for not just what they deliver, but especially when compared to the cost of Burstbuckers.
@DadRockAndGuitars2 жыл бұрын
Well said StratoLesTele! Good point on the coil spitting! I definitely liked the coil split on SD JB better. I don't like the coil split sound on the BB Pros (I have older ones) and therefore never use it. And I think the current BB pickups only have to 2 conductors so you can't coil split anyway. So if that's an important factor, the SD JB would be the way to go. Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion!

@DadRockAndGuitars yeah, the newer Epiphones have pretty decent pickups. Also, the Gibson 60s Burstbuckers in the LP Standard 60 are closer to how the JB sounds here; but with similar grit, texture and brightness as the BBPros.

I would have loved to add some true metal to the comparison, but unfortunately, I'm not a metal player. May have to learn a couple of metal riff some day. Thanks for watching E M!
