Seymour was afraid of a lot of things when I first met him.
Slowly he's learning to like all kinds of strange things.
He has a lot of fear around his face, head and ears and
was very head shy when I first met him.
I think some of it may be because he lived on a cattle property
and perhaps got his ears zapped on very strong electric fencing,
but that's only my guess, I don't really know.
He was already nervous and afraid of the flyveil, it was on my
"to do" list of the many things I need to train and condition.
He damaged his eye last month and sadly I had to force him to
wear a fly veil with an eye patch to protect his injured eye.
That potentially made his feelings about the flyveil doubly worse.
I've decided with summer coming soon, I'm going to
train and condition him to feel ok about the flyveil
and actively participate in wearing it.
You'll notice his Start Button is a deliberate head nod to start things.
Then I started with the flyveil just lying on the ground while we trained,
then later I hung it over my arm while we trained,
then later I showed it to him, let him sniff it and
waved it around a little and paired it all with food.
Then I introduced a small hand towel to shape the behaviour
of him moving his head towards it, basically head targeting it.
He did so well, I switched fairly quickly to the actual fly veil.
