Weaponizing the existence of CSAM to manipulate opinions about encryption is just sick. We can agree, CSAM is really bad! Law enforcement scanning every message from innocent people is only going to cause distrust, and for good reason. CSAM is a money-making enterprise. Pursue them!! Stop trying to infiltrate into ordinary people's lives. Sowing distrust has consequences, and then we're all worse off.
@RichardHarlos
@RichardHarlos Жыл бұрын
Collector Guy wrote, _"Law enforcement scanning every message from innocent people is only going to cause distrust, and for good reason."_ True. I would add that a concern over 'causing distrust' is maybe too little of a consideration in the bigger picture. In the bigger picture, I think it makes sense to consider whether 'public distrust' matters at all. Two lines of thought here: 1. Psychology and sociology suggest that people -- _individually and collectively_ -- tend not to respond en masse to simply violations of ethics. This is generally true, but it's especially true when the violation doesn't confront them directly. A data breach to most non-tech people is just a factoid. It's almost guaranteed that non-techies don't pay attention to such things, and the ones who do end up hearing about it probably don't go out changing passwords right away. To them, it's too abstract and, in their opinion, not particularly relevant to their concerns. The heuristic seems to be something like, _"If I can get up tomorrow and mostly do what I expected to do, then nothing else matters."_ 2. History suggests that even when people do begin to take notice of an issue, there's often such a polarized view about that matter that rather than people uniting ini solidarity against the power, instution, government, etc., that's responsible for that issue... the people just end up bickering amongst themselves. It's the ages-old tactic of 'divide and rule', and it's ages-old for a reason: it's proven tot be both reliable and effective. All that said, I think it's more useful (for those of us who are actually paying attention) to recognize the illegitimacy of existing power structures. I think it was one of the Rothschilds who said, _"Give me control of a nation's currency and I care not who makes its laws."_ That's a relevant insight to how power operates. So, if we who are paying attention are serious about safeguarding our liberty, privacy, etc., then it seems to me we need to go further back in the 'chain of events' to address the root-cause of such problems. Because unless we do that, the endless stream of 'current events' that catch our attention only serve to distract us from going back to the *ROOT* cause of society's ills. I think this characterization is correct. As to whether it's likely that the masses will every grow out of their obsession with -polarized bickering', I doubt that they will. And the conclusions we may draw from this premise are as disappointing as they are disheartening because, if I'm thinking about it correctly, then it seems inevitable that the ills of society will continue either until power succeeds in a full-scale tyranny, or until the society collapses under the weight of its own agenda to own and control everything and everyone. I suppose time will tell whether what I'm thinking is correct, and whether things will unfold as I suspect. This is one case where I hope I'm wrong but... right now, I don't think that's likely to be true.

Just a little side note: We don´t need to guess how wrong the "save the children" approach can go in practice: Germany just got unhinged in prosecuting uh... possession of explicit material involving persons of not appropriate age, I guess, lately and they completely fell on the face. Their court system is getting flooded with automated requests from America and other countries rn and because they decided to turn the possession of such material from an offense into a crime, courts cannot legally decide against making a full public case out of it, *even if it´s entirely clear from the beginning that it is a false flag from an automated system.* The massive influx of cases stalled all the major actual cases (often including abuse as well) effectively stopping the prosecution while also turning people that tried to *stop* the distribution of such material (like teachers who took away a phone) into (suspected) criminals. This is what happens when you try to turn hollow phrases into actual law. This situation probably won´t change until highest court reevaluated the whole according paragraph, which is suspected to be against the constitution anyways. (As if authorities would actually care about the constitution. lol)

My guess is that inside the browser all credentials are protected from eachother by sandboxing and only beeing accessible by the set root domain. The problem with everything relating to child abuse is never a lack of evidence but that police are incompetent and don't listen to victims. Like talk to literally any victim or go onto any forum for victims and you'll see endless stories about victims going to the police and being dismissed or even facing verbal abuse and even if an investigation does happen and it does go to court it's rare that anything comes from it regardless of the amount of victim testimonials or other evidence. Child protective services are often equally incompetent and will do nothing when there's clear evidence of abuse such as bruises or mental trauma and will often just protect the abuser. If you want to actually do something about it you should start with firstly making sure that police actually listen to victims and treat them with respect and actually try to fucking do something about it. Then updates laws around sexual assault to actually be based on consent rather than arbitrary measures like "use of force" which is literally impossible to prove unless you have video evidence. And finally start properly addressing rape culture by teaching consent in school and stop treating children as if they're the property of their parents. Like right now we're in a ridiculous situation where getting justice is usually a bigger risk for the victim than it is for the criminal. Victims have to go out of hiding and go through an incredibly stressful process and often reveal incredibly private information, spending months or years on the process, just for nothing to happen. Even though you can have multiple trained experts testify as to the reliability of the victim and that they also believe something happened. Someone is probably gonna make a bad faith argument accusing me of wanting to overturn "innocent until proven guilty" or something but literally the only thing I'm asking for is for the cases to be properly investigated and done so in a manner where the victim can be sure that they don't take a major risk by reporting what happened. You aren't going to catch anyone if the victims are too scared to come forward because reporting is massive and mostly pointless risk to take. On that note it'd also be a good idea if there was actual support for victims, like just the kind of basic healthcare we'd expect to exist in all other situations. Because right now unless your trauma came from being a veteran in most countries there is essentially no treatment of any kind available, and it's not even like veterans have an easy time here.

Only some of the more simple things will be automated be A.I and likely only one A.I will be used for that position instead of AGI working all systems as A.I solve times are not linear, they are exponential, as with the limits of digital computing. Quantum computing may offer a temporary solution, however we’d likely run into the same issue of exponential solve times eventually. A.I such as ChatGPT will not remain free, and with their speed decreasing with complexity, I predict they will fall out of popularity, or perhaps it will inspire competition in the free market. Now that would be exciting!

I didn't need it until now, I can happily carry on without it for the future.
