There's a third Gutteridge entitled 'Fratricide is a Gas', arguably one of the best book titles ever. I showed the trilogy in one of my Hay On Wye book haul videos a year or so back. On that front, the Saul Dunn books are like lemmings in one Hay bookshop, where they have tons of them...probably not a good sign, but I guess you'll find out for yourself. That Conan collection is front rank, has everything. I think you'll like C A Smith, but any friend of mine who has known me for years would tell you what I always say when he's mentioned in conversation: "Smith is the kind of writer who would never use a word like 'bandages' when he could write 'cerements' instead,". In a good way, though. I think you'll like him.

I'd forgotten you had previously talked about the Gutteridge books. I just noticed the one in your recent video. I'll be on the lookout for the third. And once again, a book i was just looking at turns up in your most recent video. 'Interplanetaries" is what I almost bought before I decided on the Zothique collection instead. I'm looking forward to checking him out!

Yet another excellent haul. That Lemmus Trilogy looks like a trip; and yes, 10:21, the covers are "damn cool."

That Julian Jay Savarin book Waiters On The Dance was his band's album title before it was a book. I've never heard them, but his band was called Julian's Treatment. He was their songwriter and played organ too.

Pro Tip -- you don't need to read the Conan stories in "chronological order of his life" or "order of publication", you can just read them in any order you want. I recommend "Beyond the Black River," "Red Nails," "The People of the Black Circle," "The Hour of the Dragon" and "The Tower of the Elephant" as top-tier. There are probably some other stories that vie for a spot on the "best of Conan" list but you can't go wrong with those.

Thanks for the recommendations. And for the info, nice to know I can read them in any order!

Back in the 90s, I was lucky enough to find Ballantine editions of Zothique, and Hyperborea, one day in a used bookstore. I had been on the lookout for Zothique for quite awhile, to fulfill a Fantasy Recommendations list requirement...but of course one does not just leave Hyperborea behind and take Zothique. The only other CAS book I ever found was Out of Space and Time: Volume 2; I don't think any of these would show up in the wild now, except on some rare day. I think you will like Zothique. Also especially happy you have: Who Goes Here? (funny!) Ship of Strangers Valley of the Flame Best of Jack Williamson

Yeah ever since I saw a documentary on CAS I've been on the lookout but well aware its not very likely I'd find anything. Finally I caved and bought new. The Hyperborea stuff sounds most appealing to me though. Hippocampus Press also has a collection of his SF that I thought about buying, and perhaps will if I enjoy this collection enough. I'm still looking for that Bob Shaw that really wows me, Who Goes Here sounds like good fun though! The Williamson turned out to be a book I already had but this one is in much better shape!

Dude!! That The High Crusade copy is very nice! I will keep an eye out for that cover. Bob Shaw is an author I need to check out. I saw a couple of his books at 2nd & Charles last time I was there and I didnt buy them. Jeez!! What a great haul! Scott.

Those Ballantine Del Rey "The Best of ..." are in great condition! Next week I'll be sharing my new obsession with this series including a shout out to your channel. There are 21 in the same livery from 1974 to 1979. Two others were published in the 1980s, HP Lovecraft and John Brunner, but the livery or graphic design was different. The publisher calls the series "Ballantine's Classic Library of Science Fiction". Hope you enjoy Demon Breed as much as I did. I'm continuing to look for more James H. Schmitz and started reading the series of stories about Telzey Amberdon.

This is good info, I've been trying to track all Best of's down and I came up with 21 as well for the core series. Not really interested in the HP Lovecraft one but the Brunner cover art looks amazing even if it isn't in the same livery.
@vintagesf
@vintagesf 7 ай бұрын
@@sfwordsofwonder Agree about skipping Lovecraft but Brunner is worth having in its own right. Perhaps SFWords, SFReads and VintageSF should read the same book and have a conversation about the stories. Which were your favourites, what were the pros and cons, a bit of history about the writer.

I have the first in the series (i believe), the Weinbaum, but in a different livery. The first page introduces the series as 'definitive collections by the masters of science fiction, each introduced by a distinguished SF writer or critic", and goes on to list the next in the series to be published as the best of Lieber, Kuttner, Pohl and Cordwainer Smith. Pretty cool! Though i wonder if any others were first published with this different cover art style (Weinbaum was eventually re-published in the style the rest follow), very much looking forward to your video on them!

I'm not entirely sure. I haven't done my homework yet. It's 13 stories total. I'm not sure if any were previously published as novels. I had heard of these stories at some point but if not for your mention of them in a recent video i probably wouldn't have noticed it on the shelf!

Love the Best of's. High Crusade is a book that I've been intrigued by, the concept sounds so great, it will be my next Poul read. Nice Conan collection, I need to re-read some of those. I still think I'm going to read Children of the Sky in Feb if your interested.

I *CANNOT* praise Clark Ashton Smith highly enough. Being one of the Weird Tales 3, in *some* ways he predates genre boundaries. HPL looked up to him, and I'm sure much of HPL's thesaurus clutching was in a sincere attempt to emulate his autodidactive polyglotness. His writing often is able to conjure an other-worldliness that lingers in flavour long after the details have dissipated. Ethereal; Purple prose in the kingly sense. As to his "original" paperbacks - they are few and far between; not in the scarcity sense, but because they were out of sync with revivals. There were Arkham House Hard covers in the US & then MMPB's in the 70's. In the UK there were HC's from Neville Spearman in the early 70s which were the basis for the Panther MMPB's. In the Early to mid 2,000's there were more authoritative HC copies published by Skyhorse / Nightshade & the TPB's of which are STILL AVAILABLE on Amazon at cover price - So Don't Feed the Speculators on ebay! I don't know why CAS has become a hotbed of speculation, but ignore the copies of anything at $150 and up. They sit there never selling. His Hardcovers do sell for around $30 - $65, but your heart must be pure. Hippocampus just put out a new collection that Steve (Outlaw Bookseller) just got in his latest update video. (More Damp, Hilarious Demonic Possession and Killer Mice) I await your feedback on that edition.

Great haul, SFR! I like that Poul Anderson "The High Crusade" version. Have never seen it before. I've got many P. Andersons...Off-subject but, have you done a comprehensive "my favorite SF cover art" episode? I know you are an enthusiast so, thought it natural you would have one of those subject episodes but I couldn't find one in your archive. Perhaps I could search better... Enjoying your channel and enthusiasm immensely. Cheers.

I've thought of doing such a video, but there are many I'd like to do on different topics, I just never have the energy or time lol. The closest I've done to something like that would be the montage of different covers set to music. For now the channel has kind of settled into a routine of Book hauls and Recent Reads videos. I'd like to put out the odd video on a specific topic from time to time but no longer will make promises (as i have in the past 😅). As always, thanks for watching! Always nice to hear from you, Rick!

Neal Asher, by looking at your bookshelf, seems to be one of your favorites. What book should I read first of his to try him out?

I always recommend Gridlinked, the first he wrote and the first in a 5 book series involving probably his best known character. It also serves fine as a stand alone. It's a great introduction to the world of the Polity setting. However, its not his best written, so lately when asked for a recommendation I suggest giving literally any of his stand alones a try if Gridlinked doesn't do it for you. I also made a video several months back detailing the Polity setting and his work. Quite different from my regular videos.
