We ring in a Thanksgiving Twilight Zone special, but this is no turkey. An engaging look at five trapped people wanting answers and escape. We've all been there.

Wow. The original Toy Story was a lot darker.

The 'uncanny valley' effect of the mannequin faces really added a nice kicker to the end of this episode.

"YOU! ARE! A! TOY!" "Space Major!" This episode really weirded me out when I was a kid. I loved it. Of course, it had a huge impact on my interpretation of Toy Story when I saw it years later.

(The Major starts pounding on the walls) Clown (Singing): "We're here because we're here, because we're here, because we're-" (The Major stops) Clown: "..." (Major starts again) Clown: "... because we're-" (Major stops again) Clown: "... here?" (Silence) Clown: "You're wasting your time, you know that, don't you? You're an idiot. An energetic idiot... but an idiot." This one interaction alone made the Clown my favourite character XD

While the twist is obvious, it’s a great character piece and the twist is still good, showing one of the best strengths of the Twilight Zone was not the horror of aliens (the MANY good episodes about them) or the supernatural (not as many but still good few) but the character work they would bring to these characters and breath life into them that was near unmatched in their era and very hard to top today. It’s why One for the Angels is my absolute FAVORITE Twilight Zone ever.

Today the major would act violent, implying he was some sort of war criminal, and the clown would try to rape the ballerina, only for her to be rescued by the tramp. The ballerina and tramp would then fall in love, because the tramp somehow knew that he must have been a victim in his forgotten past and could relate to what she was feeling. (You know. Because "feels".) The bagpipe player would then attack the clown, who would almost kill him, until the major saves him. They, too, would suddenly and without reason somehow realize on a deeper level that they were "more than friends". It would ultimately be revealed that they were all the toys of a child suffering from abuse by his parents who was acting out his frustration on his toys. He would be about to set them all on fire until a friendly social worker comes in and explains that everything will be OK because he is going to a new family that will love him unconditionally. It's "dark"! It's "edgy"! It's...modern "drama". 😕

What's really great about this one is it plays on the infamous cheapness of 60s scifi movie sets.. you should have been able to pick up on something being profoundly wrong with their situation long ago, because what the hell is a circular room with no top?? but it doesn't occur to you because we're just used to this idea that twilight zone might put people in a weird set someone designed.

unless it was a period piece, the image of someone ringing a bell next to a toy collection bin on the side of a snowy street wouldn't fit into a more modern setting

I know what you mean about Windom being recognizable here mainly for one episode on Star Trek. He was in fact someone who was in movies and on one or more episodes of most TV shows from the 1960s to 2000 or so. He was on the Invaders, the Fugitive, Bonanza, Simon and Simon, the Love Boat, JAG, and Ally McBeal. So, most people probably remember him as one of those guys from movies and TV. As for this episode, it didn't really click with me. It seemed too contrived and I didn't connect to the characters.

The creepiest part is how the mystery revealed at the end totally denigrates their existence irrefutably. A see this as a metaphor towards us and how we spend all our lives wondering what awaits us on the other side of life. It may very well be something we'd rather not know. Anything that exists is in a hell of sorts, trapped in an absolute form and limited capacity. A prisoner of our boundaries. Blessed are those who have never existed.

Hey Chuck, have you actually watched any of your Star Trek reviews recently? There's like 15 ads you have to get through a single episode, some that takes as long as a minute to get through and others that refuse to progress until you personally watch view the ad on your screen, otherwise the video will refuse to play. And on top of all the damn ads interrupting every single train of thought, the videos contently shutters from buffering so you only get half a minute of a video uninterrupted at a time. It's an absolutely awful way to experience your content. Just watch your Move Along Home review to see what I mean.
@sfdebris

Yes, this is why I have been moving them onto YT, as there is no way to turn those ads off. Apologies for the inconvenience.

I'm not american, but it has been brought to my attention that Thanksgiving day, when it's not celebrated in October by Canadians, is a time when people that dislike one another come toghe... ah, now I get why you saved this episode for Thanksgiving day. Sorry.
