What a time capsule! Watching these crappy quality videos back in the day always made Japanese arcades feel like they existed in another dimension to me. Just completely alien, conceptually. The distance was palpable, you know? And the bootleg on-screen graphics, the horrible sound quality, the arcade ambience, watching them over and over and the feeling of idolising and studying and imitating certain players... What a special time. This was 20 years ago... and Deshiken has still been playing the exact same insane style since then. He's just always been kinda nuts, huh? What a trip.

They had a thriving arcade scene for training, and mooks (magazine+book, I shit you not) with framedata, tech etc released regularly for arcade games, and SBO and coop cup were recorded and sold in VHS. It’s not like there was no documentation.

Their community were about sharing and learning from each other. Getting better daily like the Pakistani Tekken scene. Unlike the Western approach back in the day. When you would NOT show your best until the tournament. Hence 'save it for the nationals' saying. So glad with streaming and KZbin content creators changed that mind set. Because it was about who could find the dopest tech first.
