Caught my biggest rainbow on July 5th in a high mountain lake this summer on a fly I tie similar to yours. I used holographic copper brown flashabou and a gold rib with copper bead. That fish was 28" and jumped 12 times, HOT fish in my 5wt in float tube ☺️. Really enjoy watching you and Phil and Don fish together.

Big Year for 2021 planned, Covid dependent of course. Plan to have Phil finally join us on a few shows along with a few other SFOTF Pro Staff members.

Brian, I love your knowledge and expertise is tying and entomology. My question is how important is it to know the exact species of insects in my home waters, moving and still? I have always been interested and practiced some entomology. How do I go about identifying each species on my home waters? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again for your informative videos! Cheers, Mic

A fun way is to catch/trap a few insects in your local waters via throat samples, turning over rocks, sifting through the weeds/mud. Take pics and then google Caddis, mayflies, Chironomids, stoneflies, etc. to try and match the insect pics. There are also good entomology books available online.

Thanks for the volume of information you provide! I’m finding window tint in light, medium, or dark, which would you recommend?

All three! Vary the thread color underneath to create a variety of deadly Chironomid patterns. You can never have enough colors 🤩👌

Is the 3/32 bead plastic or metal? Great discussion of fly design to attract trout. Thanks!

How big a deal is the coating as far as how the fly fishes? With the window tint, it already has a shiny look to it. Do you think the UV (or whatever type of coarting) makes a big difference?

I think it can actually hinder the look of the fly by dulling/discoloring the thread but works GREAT on protecting the fly. That’s why I personally stay away from the UV coatings and stick to Loctite or crazy glue.
