Belichick went 5-11 his first year as Patriots HC, with the highest-paid QB at the time in Bledsoe, and most of the same defensive players. They were .500 (2-2) before Bledsoe got hurt and Brady went into the game against the Jets. Again with that same defense in the first 4 games. The winning started with Brady as the starting QB and ended when Brady left. It's quite simple.

I caught that too. I guess what we define as "old school" depends on our generation. She's Millennial Generation. I'm Gen X. To my Gen X ears, the phrase "I'm old school, I don't like to be yelled at" in a sports context sounded really off. To a Gen Xer, yelling used to be part of the road. But maybe that's different for Millennials.

The entire narrative on Bill is ridiculous. To delete a guys success because he had Tom Brady for 20 years is absolutely idiotic. The bulk of his career is with Tom , to delete 20 years and judge a guy off the rest Is dumb. Also Tom and Belichick both lost with the Pat's Tom's last 2 years. @billkerns9258
@billkerns9258 9 ай бұрын
@@LKS-M9323 Agreed. I view that whole debate as generational too, and the way we talk of sports in general has changed. I know I make myself sound old - Gen X, born in the middle of the 1970s. I have not bothered to look up the ages of all panelists, but I'm guessing that they are all Millennial Generation. I admit to watching clips at times for entertainment (after all, I am making this comment) but the show often lacks a sense of historical context and nuance. I don't recall Bill Walsh being denigrated because he had Montana, Jerry Rice, and other Hall of Famers. Chuck Noll experienced some really down years in the 1980s (decreased talent, bad drafts including infamously passing on Dan Marino and to Noll's credit he owned up to his share of responsibility in the bad decision). But I don't recall a narrative of dissing Noll because of the large amount of Hall of Famers on the Steelers during the dynasty era. Noll was far more old school than any of these panelists. Similar things being said in this discussion could have been said of Noll in the late 1980s and early 1990s (and a 35-year-old Bradshaw may have said far worse about Noll than Shady said of Belichick if given today's level of discourse), but Noll can still be treated with respect.

And the waterboy and the cheerleaders and the owner and and and. If you wanna be literal about it sure. But we're talking big picture, who made the most difference. It was TB12. Bill I think gets like 15% of the credit cause he did teach defenses and he trained people hard, but he also bend/broke the rules a lot and made life miserable for the players and cut good players early despite Tom giving back money. Then Tom goes to the NFC South, also a joke of a division and wins in the worst division in football at the time. There were numerous top 5 to top 10 defenses in those 20+ years and that's not on Tom. The drafting and development of players was not on Tom, quit with the nonsense. If Belichick made it known that he's looking to be a HC but not GM, some teams would fire their guys to get him. If Belichick made it known that he's looking to be just a DC, every DC in the league should call their real estate agent. It's the overall GM and Presidential powers that is keeping teams from hiring him. The word is out on his ability to build a program. And these owners talk to each other, are all friends. You know Kraft didn't give a glowing reference for Bill, seeing how Bill treated Kraft like a child and ignored him quite a bit. And there's no way Kraft wants to see Bill succeed like he had to watch Brady. Bill's own stubbornness is stopping him. He wants total control. Wow one playoff win in 5 years as a Browns coach. Everything you wrote can easily be debunked. Belichick was 5-11 in his last season in Cleveland and it had nothing to do with Modell leaving. Ya sure he could have taken them repeatedly I was brought up where if you have an opinion on something always ask yourself how well you would do in a Court of Law with that opinion ... Bill Belichick as a head coach in the NFL without Brady (Resume) ⤵ 1991 out of playoffs 1992 out of playoffs 1993 out of playoffs 1995 out of playoffs 2000 out of playoffs 2001 (0-2) After Brady Week 3 - (14-3) 2008 out of playoffs 2020 out of playoffs 2022 out of playoffs 2023 out of playoffs .437 Win% in 140 games without Brady > Sample size = 8.5 seasons Only 1 playoff win , Wild Card (10 full seasons) without Brady That's a damning forensic record. Brady without Belichick > SB winner/SB MVP 14,600 yards passing and 110 TD's (Best in the NFL) over 3 season in Tampa at ages 43-45 And I'm Derek Jeter in the on deck circle just getting warmed up Wanna Play With Me?

Brady NEVER won a ring without a good defense, in fact he had a SB run where he threw 1 TD throughout the entire playoffs. Bill also drafted and developed several all pros and hall of famers on defense.

This is one of the few times I agree with Joy. Man football is such a team game. You need good coaches up and down the food chain to win, aside from having generational players like Brady. BB like you said, built that NE defense, and most times Tom is just being asked to "manage" the game. So you see a lot of boring 21-17, 17-14 games, where NE's games barely scratch 40 points combined. BB manages the D, manages the clock, squeeze every possession (that's why you hear NE coaches scoffing at people reaching for the endzone Re: Zay Flowers). Although to Tom's credit, when he's asked to come from behind, he's more clutch than not. BB did have some ego, did think he could win without Brady, and did find out the hard way. But does that make him a bad coach? No it doesn't. But to today's NFL offense driven, you can't hit players like before as a D, you have to have those innovators on offense. That's why they are going young. The "Patriot Way" is so 10 years ago. These young guys don't know what winning takes. Which also means, if you can build a dynasty like KC, or the up and coming SF, you can probably win a lot more. Because teams are now selfish, undisciplined, badly coached, as players get more and more power. So they all go together. BB at the end is just a victim of his time ... I think if someone's interested at Steve Wilks as a head coach, I definitely wouldn't mind having BB as the 49ers' D coordinator. I don't think for a second Shanahan's ego's too big for that.
