It took me years to try an SG (Vintage vs6). It quickly became my favourite type of guitar. Slim, light, great upper fret access and pure rock tones. Love them

Just got one a few days ago (second-hand Vintage vs6, with Wilkinson hardware, and before they changed the shape of horns). I've always wanted an SG, but being a strat and superstrat player for most of my life I was aware it will take some getting used to and was dreading it to be honest, whether I'll be able to get accustomed to such a different guitar or not. It is a different feeling for sure (frets are farther from me than I am used to, and shorter scale and small and slim body made it seem like a toy at first), but I was amazed by how easy and enjoyable it is to play this guitar. A slim and fast neck and all of the frets being easily accessible... despite having to fight it a bit due to a certain amount of neck dive when standing, to my pleasant surprise, I've quickly grown to love the feel of SG shape, they are fantastically designed guitars.

I bought my first Gibson SG in January as a bit of a 50th birthday treat. I had a couple of Epiphone SG`s quite a few years ago and I could of probably happily settled for another this time, but couldn`t resist finally owning a Gibson! As for this channel, they`re the only videos on KZbin that I watch all the way through! You should put some merch out, I`m a total sucker for merch!!

Thanks for sharing, Colin. Another great video. One guitar per week is manageable. That is being custodian to 52 , or 65 in your case. That first SG is a real beauty, fade and all. Magnificent tones. Some of us will recall the sweet tones Mick Taylor coaxed from his SG. Far more than an LP's little brother. And yes there have been some fine practitioners of single coil (not P90) SG's. ie Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush. Cheers!

Even though I am a bass player that switched from guitar to bass at 13 after playing guitar for a little over a year, I heard Disraeli Gears and Led Zeppelin II and fell in love with the sound of the bass guitar. My first bass was a 66 Gibson EB-0 because of Jack Bruce, not just my favorite bass player but all around musician. It made me fall in love with the sound of the SG, from Clapton in Cream to Tony Iommi and Angus Young, I think it's the best all around Rock guitar, I think they are better then a Les Paul because of the tone and the weight. I consider it the Gibsons version of the Telecaster, no frills, just a slab of wood, neck,strings and pups. Even though I have more then enough 70's and 80's Fender J's and P basses I will always keep my EB-0, and even though I only own an Epiphone SG and some other middle of the road guitars I promised myself before I turn 60, witch is 5 months away I will buy myself a Gibson, nothing new but a good 80's- 90's no frills SG. Maybe a Special with the P90's or I always liked one with mini Humbuckers but not a deal breaker. I am going to start looking for one and take my time and will have to play it first, I have said it before and I will say it again I love your playing Colin, cheers from America.

My SG (Cherry, Special) doesn't neck dive. It does have a beautifully shaped neck, nice n thin, stays in tune. It only has 22 frets but I'm a rhythm player and only play a couple of solos but nothing up where it annoys dogs, I can reach the top fret on all the strings without any contortion and being an SG, I can literally play it all night, without it beginning to weigh around my neck like an albatross.

To me the SG is the perfect guitar! It’s light, has all the girth of a LP, but with extra bite; not to mention way better upper fret access! I have 13 electric guitars, and if I had to reduce down to 1 only, without hesitation I would keep my 2013 SG Standard with ‘57 Classics…it just rips! Love these videos as always Colin! I'm glad to hear that your SGJ got so much playtime, and hopefully still does if you haven't sold it. I bought my first Gibson Les Paul earlier this year and it was an immaculate 2014 LPJ in Fireburst. I bought it on the spot for a steal and like yourself changed most of the hardware. It's a beauty and is a great compliment to my 2004 Gibson SG Special. 👍🎸 And as always, thanks for doing what you do!

I think the perceived 'neck-dive' is less of a factor to adjust to than the shift outwards from the body of the neck. Ironically the scale is shorter, but your first position chord reach and playing ergonomics are different due to the outstretched neck heel attachment for that upper fret access. Robby Krieger, + Fender Twin Reverb, Tony Iommi + Laney, & Angus Young+ Marshall - most obvious R & R SG tone-titan recipes- Who wouldn't want to try an SG after hearing those guys' records?!?

I've been playing SGs for almost 40 years and have never really had a single problem with neck dive (on the other hand, my Firebird with the banjo tuners dives like it was trying to win Gold at the Olympics). SGs are my all time favourite guitar. I started playing them because of Brian James from The Damned. His playing laid me flat so I had to have what he was having!

I found that "neck dive" occurred when the guitar was slung down at waist level. Hanging the guitar so that the body rested against the rib cage, "jazz guitar style" resulted with no neck dive. As a matter of fact, I don't remember any neck dive on the 1974 SG Standard, I had. Oh well, maybe I just didn't notice. ;-)
@williamarthurfenton1496
@williamarthurfenton1496 Жыл бұрын
I have certainly learned in the past few years to appreciate SGs for their qualities. On the neck dive thing, I've got two-- one dives and the other doesn't. The one that does is because it's under 6lbs and to add to that it's got the neck type where the strap button is closer in the body. In fact I'd say it's probably SGs that have made me more picky about upper neck access. I decided against buying a full body Casino because the access is pretty dire-- what's the point having those frets if you can't even get to them.

I haven’t picked up an SG since I got a ‘61 Les Paul for a Player I was teaching for. It had that great “quack” that only the PAFs truly have! I set it up for him and loved the sound, but hated the feel! I don’t have a P-90 guitar in my arsenal for the first time since ‘70 when I had a LPjrDC (‘59 true TV). That is the one that got away. My fault, I traded it away.

Now THAT was fun!!! I had a thought about SG neckdive issues. Actually, I had a few but I'll try not to ramble... While tuner weight is definitely a factor, I believe another thing to consider is whether you have a Standard or a Special. That stopbar tailpiece and Tune-o-matic bridge combined with two big ol' honking humbuckers on the Standard probably helps as a counterbalance while the Special's P-90s and Lightning bridge contribute slightly less weight to the equation. Then there's the matter of neck profile. As much as I love a '59 LP style neck I can't imagine an SG balancing very well with a beefy neck adding more weight to the equation. As it is, my Epi SG Special balances just slightly neck heavy with a 3" padded leather strap. But it's a small compromise when you consider all that unrestricted upper fret access!!! Have a great weekend buddy, see ya' next Friday!!! ✌️✌️✌️

I'm pretty sure your "SG200" started life as an SG 1 (72-75) The original neck pickup IS a humbucker, it is a mini-humbucker, I suspect it was moved from the bridge to the neck position. The bridge pickup is an addition. The reason I say it is an SG1 and not an SG 2 is that the control cavity on the SG1 is smaller, as yours is, than the control cavity of the SG 2 which had to hold 4 pots, jack input and two slider switches. I am also pretty certain the scratch guard and switch guard are from an Sg Special of the same era. The guitar originally had 3 on a plate Gibson deluxe tuners with nickel bell buttons.... these can be found on the SG1, SG2 and SG3(a sunburst model with 2 pickups). I have an SG1 and have sourced 2 70s Les Paul mini humbuckers to convert it into an SG2.

It’s an SG2 as it happens… I got the model wrong.

@@theguitaristas I stand corrected, the SG2 also only had 2 pots. ..thought it had 4

Talk about timing, going through different guitars in my collection, I finally found the SG with P90s will be my main guitar for gigs. Then this video came out. Now I have the Gibson SG 60s Tribute as my main and the Epiphone SG Worn as my backup. I enjoy watching your videos. Awesome playing and great format!! Your channel rocks!! 🤘
