SGB Review - Metroid 2: Return of Samus

Month of Metroid continues and this time we're going into Samus's first pocket adventure released on the good ol' Gameboy. It's Metroid 2: Return of Samus!

I know plenty of people who love this game the most out of all Metroid titles, and I can respect them for that. I don't like it so much as a Metroid game, but as a game itself, especially for the Gameboy, I think it's pretty damn good.

There is actually a (unofficial) remake of Metroid 2 being made by this one guy (not sure about name. The remake is called AM2R or Another Metroid 2 Remake. So far there is only a demo but it is getting there, and it is fantastic. There is music in all areas (great music as well), other bosses besides Metroids, and the Metroids can actually be fairly difficult now as they all can only be hit in certain spots. And the AI for the Metroids knows to hide the weak spots really well. You should check it out.

Personally I think this game is better than the first Metroid Game, I can't finish the first game (not even with a guide) because I get lost and I don't know where the crap to go, instead here not only did I enjoyed it but I managed to know where to go, what to do and it gave me enough sense of direction to make me know when I was making progress. And apparently nobody gives this game the credit of revolutionize the franchise (did he really ignored the implementation of Save Stations?).

I have this game on my 3DS and beat this game in 3 hours without dying once and used no restore points. In my opinion Metroid 2 deserves more then a 6.5 out of 10

chedly ksouri well I've never played Mega Man 4-5 or 6 but I always thought MegaMan X had a great soundtrack. I guess it depends on the persons taste in music. As for Mario, Mario games aren't just for kids they are targeted for all ages like Sonic, rayman, and MegaMan ect, they are just child friendly but are made for all ages. Mario has been around Since 1981 and is the best selling video game franchise of all time he's quite famous. I hope I was helpful

I think it's because Nintendo was experimenting with gameplay styles at the time. They probably chose a really good gameplay style, mixed things up by fusing the old gameplay style with vastly different game-changing elements in the sequel, and waited for the fans to reaction to the new features. They probably then took the best elements and bases of the first games and fused them with the best additions in the new games (for example, Zelda II's magic meter). Pretty good marketing practice IMO.

5:29 An Omega Metroid would later go on to be the final boss of Metroid Fusion, where after you defeat SA-X, you set the BSL station to self destruct to crash into SR388 and after you defeat the Omega Metroid, you escape on the Purple ship as the BSL crashes into SR388, destroying both in the process.

the manual for Metroid II does confirm that lava statement: Map illustrations paint the liquid a glowy red. Oh, and in Metroid Fusion, the SRX Sector also contains Lava, strongly implying the actual planet does too.

I will agree with you Johnny about the soundtrack but I also think that you were only right about all the complaints about the soundtrack when it came to the atmospheric Tunes, but when it tries to have an actual Melody I think it gets the job done just fine, listen to the main theme of the game "Surface of SR388" to see what I mean.

Played this for the first time back in January. It still holds up fairly well, although it could seriously use the map future that the AM2R fan game included. Due to a four-color palette, all corridors start to look identical before long, and trying to find that last metroid in a given area can be very confusing sometimes.

I don't doubt it. But we're also talking about a 20+ year gap between the two games. For the time, this game was impressive, and it's still fun to play if you can overlook the identical appearance of all those corridors, not to mention the linearity.

The enemies may be easy for you, but for newbies who don't know the strategy, they can be a challenge. Sure, the game was linear but there was still plenty of exploration. You had to look in every corner of the map to find all the metroids before proceeding. The music in this game was more ambiance then actual tunes. It set the mood perfectly, dark, eerie, vulnerable. Not being able to see far ahead I think goes great with the mood. In my opinion, this game captures the theme of the series best.

I agree about how bad the beam stacking works in this game. It should've work like this... "Press the Select button to bring up the beam menu and choose your beam weapon. Normal, Ice, Wave, Spazer, & Plasma.

It's a pity this game didn't get a DX remake Link's Awakening-style. It would have been so great. But this really is a good game. Yes, I know you got lost as a kid. So did I. It could have used a map. Fine. But nowadays you can find them online easily so there's no real excuse. It really is quite good. It's one of the best Game Boy games and honestly holds up a lot better than the first. I don't hate the first Metroid, contrary to what some think. I just don't think it's aged well. I still play this game and I still have fun with it. There's a color patch online too.

Actually, all GBC, GBA, and GBP hardware has a special palette for Metroid 2 built in based off of Metroid 1's palette, because of Yokoi's contributions to both the Metroid series and the Game Boy's hardware. That's why I don't get why people complain about getting a DX port of it, all you have to do is plug it into any GBC or GBA compatible and it has special colors built into the system.

Funny enough the game was planned to have a DX treatment just like Link's Awakening but never did. There's old ads of both Metroid 2 and Link's Awakening with DX versions but it never came to be. The game does have a nice palette on any Gameboy from color up and it also looks good on Super Gameboy as well though.

Because there was programming in the SNES Game Boy Reader to use colours already in the game, the games from Nintendo's eShop are just emulations and are default black.

Of what music tracks there are, the song called "the tunnel", the first song you hear for the "main area" is pretty catchy and memorable. There's also the theme for the final area leading up to the Queen as well as the final battle music with the Queen herself. You want proof? Also when those 3 franchises made their 3D debut, that the second 3D game was always the darker game. Super Mario Sunshine had you collecting shine sprits to restore light to isle delfino, Majoras mask was so much darker in atmosphere and setting and of course Metroid Prime 2 echoes had Dark Aether. They were also Black Sheeps, because SMS had the fludd and voiceacting, Majoras mask had the most unique items of any Zelda Game with the masks and MP2E had the dark and light weapons

They are making a remake of this game named AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake). They still haven't finished it but they released a demo version that, i believe , is only downloadable for PC. Before they released the demo they made another metroid game named Metroid - Confrontation in which you need to kill three bosses - Crokomire , Kraid and Ridley. No, you don't enter Tourian like in Metroid - Zero Mission, already you get back to your ship through the door that opens after beating all bosses.

This is my go to example of a game that is... "PRIME" remake territory ;D You can make an all new soundtrack, make the graphics awesome PLUS you could add in a map feature or the ability to switch between beams with ease! Maybe throw in a couple minibosses, make the Metroid fights a little more varied and bam-boom-bippidy-bop you got yourself a great new game.

That's because the first games were surprisingly sucessful, much to the surprise of the people who made and published them, leading them to work on a sequel which they intended to be entirely different. Seeing how people didn't like the new ideas, they go back to the first games and improve on them immensely, thus giving birth to the amazing third entry. Super Mario 2 is a whole different scenario tho, since the REAL Super Mario 2 didn't make it's way to the west for a couple of years.

If you like the Super Gameboy you should check out the specially made controller available for the Super Famicon (it's called the Super Gameboy Commander). I don't know whether or not it would be compatible with a U.S. system though. It is designed to look and feel like the bottom half of a classic Gameboy and has extra buttons to adjust screen-size and speed. It's not a necessity but the nostalgia factor is pretty cool.

I love this game, it was my introduction to Metroid and I don't think any less of it. You probably know by now that Arachnus is the only non Metroid boss in the game, and the power up you get may spring to mind. And of course, other m is by far the worst thing they could have come up with...

Johnny, I think that you're being a little hard on the music. When it first came out I read an interview that said the game taxed the current GB Cartridge design in memory and processing. Maybe the article I read was blowing smoke up its reader's rectums at the time, but Metroid 2 did come out very early in the career, and the game map design was the largest of the current games during release. I can see why some would give it a 6.5 out of 10, although, I loved it.

I was stuck in the Denver airport because I missed my connecting flight. So I was there for like 10 hours all night, and all I had to do was play this on the Original Game Boy. It was pretty cool though. It really helped the experience. I ended up sleeping on a row of chairs in the terminal. That kinda sucked. lol

Doctor64 is currently remaking this game. It's called AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) and it's HELLA fun. He improved the soundtrack, gameplay, and even added a few of his own challenges to it. It's not complete yet, but google it and give it a try!

Zelda 2 and Castlevania 2 both tried to do something different from the original game as their series didn't have a set standard yet. Afterwards they went back and instead polished the original idea and thus we got great games like A Link To The Past and Castlevania 3. Metroid seems more like hardware limitations.

...there are tons of dangerous creatures that appear from out of the blue to drain your supplies, which sometimes give you energy upon termination. Just like Metroid 1, there is no map, and MANY of the paths are hidden like Castlevania's breakable walls. That means you must bomb/shoot EVERY wall and ceiling in the entire labyrinth of the game. It soon got tedious. I don't even remember finding recharge stations, which means that...

in my opinion, the games faults are not a problem, i like nostalgia to much to even care about the crap you mentioned, plus, i like the way this game is presented, it looks cooler than most nintendo ds games ive seen, im not gonna say which because than people including you will hate me.....your review, although bad, has actually made me want the game more, thank you for showing this game because now i REALLY want it

I've had this downloaded for a while on my 3DS but haven't actually taken the time to fully play it, I remember messing around with it for an hour and taking out about half the metroids. I think I'll give this game another go and actually try to complete it.

Metroid 2 Return of Samus was my first Metroid game which was on my 3ds and two years later I got the Super Nintendo Classic and I played Super Metroid more than the 2nd game

it sounds stupid but honestly linearity doesn't matter that much to me in metroid games It just means it keeps the game moving and i don't have to worry about going the wrong way.
