This bring me way back to 94 and my own personal speed runs. I didn't even know they were a thing or that they would become a thing. I would just lock myself into my room and play my favorite game. Almost 30 yrs ago now. Glad to see one of my all time favs is still getting so much luv.
@EebstertheGreat4 жыл бұрын
1:17:15 Small correction. The softlock in Tourian has nothing to do with performing the zebetite skip (which is probably the glitch he means here). You can always clip back out of the zebetite too if you want. The softlock is actually built into the game. The door back out of Tourian in the room with the super metroid cutscene (the "big boy room") is locked for some reason, so you just can't leave, and none of the enemies remaining in Tourian after the metroids are killed drop ammo. In a casual playthrough, you would have so many missiles at that point that you could just refill them at the refill station and never softlock. But in a speedrun like this, you don't have enough missiles to kill Mother Brain, so you need a lot of super missiles too. With no way to refill them, if you don't get enough drops from the metroids or if you miss shots at Mother Brain, there is no longer any way to advance.
@revenevan114 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the excellent explanation of this soft lock. I wouldn't have thought about the station not refilling supers being so critically important that it can completely soft lock you!
@EebstertheGreat4 жыл бұрын
@@revenevan11 It never occurred to the devs, either! Missile packs are so numerous, and super missile packs are so comparatively scarce, that they never thought someone might deliberately skip all the missiles and get stuck near the end that way.
@greenknight90003 жыл бұрын
I actually experienced a similar softlock in my first ever playthrough of Super Metroid, which was my first ever Metroid game; the only difference was I didn't have enough Energy Tanks to survive the unavoidable attack in the cutscene with Mother Brain
@hoodedman65792 жыл бұрын
@@greenknight9000 How did you even get to the end of the game with less than 3? The first one is so obvious that it would be impossible to miss, and the one in the room before High Jump Boots is in a similar boat, so you'd have to just never find the other 12, several of which are in plain sight or are just extremely conspicuous anyway (such as the one in that room that opens after you kill Kraid). You would also have to beat every boss with only 2 E-tanks, which itself is very not trivial on your first playthrough. How much time did you spend walking back to Phantoon and Ridley?
@zorbitalz4 жыл бұрын
I still watch this from time to time. This is hands down the best run from any GDQ. The interaction between Oats and the couch is hysterical.
@xXDragonTribalXx4 жыл бұрын
I always thought it was like the Ze in Zebra and the bes in best. Obviously in germany we pronounce it "Tseh bess" so what I'm tryin to say is, crap doesn't matter. Lore is still amazing for a nintendo franchise and im hyped for the possible Metroid Fusion 2 this year!
@revenevan114 жыл бұрын
Okay but which way do you pronounce the Ze in Zebra? The British say it with the first vowel being the same as in their pronunciation of the letter Z ("Zed") and the Americans say it like Zeebra. I had been calling it Zeebes (like bee with a z, and then the bes as a really short ending sound). But the japanese syllables spelling it in the game (which aren't ambiguous like the English text, at least in terms of how to pronounce it within Japanese) say ze-besu (both "e"s sounding like the first e in enter, the dash indicates a longer sound, and the u at the end makes an oo sound as in loop.) But even how to interpret what they meant for it to be called in when translating from the syllables they used becomes ambiguous (if you were translating some random scifi planet name to Japanese from English, whether it was zebes pronounced that way but without the last u (which to be fair is a bit chopped short in japanese), or zebeth pronounced the same but with the th as in th, both would turn into the same "ze-besu"). So yeah despite my love for linguistic trivia and excuses to bust out my Japanese knowledge, I agree with you that it doesn't matter! Just like with zebra and any other pronunciation, however your dialect or accent says it, and however you as an individual say it (within the bounds of being able to communicate, which with context is incredibly broad), they're all not only fine, but good and correct!!!
