Now and then I've used the phrase "a soldier's soldier" to indicate a superior military person of whom men in uniform would follow into battle without question, such as General Patton. However, this phrase falls short in describing Sgt. Daly: he was well above that level. Great episode within in a great concept ("Marking History"). Love all of these shorts because I learn much.

It blows my mind to think what kind of man almost pulls down a third Medal of Honor. And Butler had a Marine Brevet Medal, which would have been a Medal of Honor had they been awarding them to officers at that point. So the two guys who had two Medals of Honor should have both had three each. That is just nuts. (You should do a story about George Oldroyd, who's the most-decorated Scout lifesaver in history. He's the only one in B.S.A. history to receive the Honor Medal twice since it was constituted in 1923, and the only one to receive the top valor award from Scouts in two different countries. He received one of his Honor Medals with Crossed Palms from the B.S.A. National Court of Honor, and the Bronze Cross for Gallantry from the B-P Pathfinder Movement in the U.K. He was going to go to West Point until he broke his neck in a car wreck, so you can just imagine the kind of soldier he might have become.)

Lt General Lewis B "Chesty" Puller should have at least one of his silver stars upgraded to the Medal of Honor! And, the 2 secondary awards that Sgt. Major of the Marine Corps should be awarded his 3rd CMH, as it should have been awarded by 6 star general John J Pershing when he was nominated for it! It really pisses me off that some army paper pusher had the balls to deny a Marine ANYTHING!

Butler had the courage to put it into writing. Some who were in Haiti refused to talk about what they did there in suppressing democracy there. the Marines were a huge part of it even during WWII. Shame on the USA. A totally racist and morally corrupt policy that was employed in Haiti. No where did Daly fight except in WWI did he defend America.

The USA handled colonialism differently then. After the Boxer rebellion the European powers demanded an indemnity. As did the US. But the treaty terms guaranteed the USA and OVERPAYMENT. THE USA, alone among the western countries: After the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, the United States remitted about half of its share of the Boxer Indemnity to the Chinese government in 1908. The US was the first country to do so, and as a condition, the funds were to be used to establish schools in China and send Chinese students to universities in the United States. The Qing imperial court used the funds to create the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program, which sent students to universities in the US, including MIT. The program also established a Chinese Educational Mission office in Washington, DC, and focused students on science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and commerce.
