Sgt. Maj. John Canley will become the 300th Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
As a gunnery sergeant during the Vietnam War, Canley took command of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, after his company commander was wounded during the Battle of Hue City. Over several days, he led his Marines while saving lives and eliminating enemy threats.
He was originally awarded a Navy Cross for his actions. It is being upgraded to a Medal of Honor

Rest in His Bosom, My Dearest and Best Friend. Johnny, you were larger than life. You were a man of decency and integrity. Your wisdom, strength, positivity and focus motivated me. I trusted, admired and respected you. You were a pillar in our lives. You were an honorable man and devoted partner to me and to my children. I will forever honor your memory. Johnny Lee, Papa, we will never stop loving you. You left an indelible mark on us and on our lives. "Firstly", as you often said as pre cursory in our conversations, I recognize how much of yourself you gave to me and to my children. You, Johnny Lee, made me the woman I am today. Thank you. I didn't realize it 35 years ago, but I was blessed to have met you. Nothing, and no one, not even death, can change that. Secondly, you were as a father to my daughter from 3-39 years. Then, you grandfathered her two daughters and her younger sister too. You were always there, just a phone call away. You never missed a report card, birthday or holiday. In 35 years, you were the only person I entrusted my four girls to. My children miss their "Papa". I miss you. Our hearts are forever broken. I will miss your voice. I will miss your presence. It's painful to write this! I will see you in heaven, J Lee. Rest in Peace. I love you. We will celebrate your December birthday every year. Rest now, Papa. We love you.

My dad served in Alpha 1/1 2nd platoon with these guys. His name was Jerry McFarland but he went by Mac . He passed away about a month ago. The only thing he wanted was military honors and that's what we did for him. He was so proud of everyone he served with. They're all true American heroes. Glad to see them getting the recognition deserved.

A War had divided America and forgot American Heros. Furthermore, the rewards for a hero soldier has been so long forgotten. A soldier had defined for his actions in the battle of Huế -1968. Apparently, John Canley is a true hero and he deserves recognition. However, still have many American soldiers heroes of the Vietnam War, need recognition and deserve to rewards. Congratulations and best wishes to John Canley. The rewards for a hero soldier has been so long forgotten. A soldier had defined for his actions in "The Battle of Huế " and saves lives of his friends. John Canley is a truly hero and his deserves recognition. However, still have many American soldiers heronic in the Vietnam War, need recognition and deserve to rewards. Conguaration and best wishes to Jonh Canley. Notice: "The Battle of Huế - also called the Siege of Huế - was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War." Notes: After I was hearing the story of retired Sgt. Maj. John Canley a heroic of 'Vietnam Veterans' during the battlefield of Huế 1968. 'The battle Tet Offensive in 1968'. Moreover, at the ceremony the Medal Honor for Sgt. Maj. John Canley, the President Trump is sharing story of John Canley and his actions half of a century ago. Therefore, Sgt. Maj. John Canley story is emotions me, so I write a few lines of Vietnamese poetry, donated to Sgt. John Canley with a title: Anh (ai) nhớ Huế Xưa. "The Battle of Huế - also called the Siege of Huế - was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War." www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2018/09/25/50-years-later-marine-gunny-to-be-awarded-the-medal-of-honor-for-hue-city-heroics/ Anh (ai) nhớ Huế Xưa Anh (ai) đến Huế đầu mùa xuân máu đổ (Tết 1968) Chiến đấu đêm ngày chiếm lại Thành Đô Tết Mậu Thân (Tet 1968) khăn tăng phủ đầy mồ Cộng sản bắt người chặt đầu chôn sống Cố Đô Huế trong điêu tàn ác mộng Đổ nát, đau thương, tăng tóc ngập trời. Anh (ai) xa Huế ngày tháng nào năm ấy Đã bao giờ trở lại chiến trường xưa Những vết thương lòng nay đã lành chưa Hay còn đó vẫn nằm trong tâm trí Ngoảnh nhìn lại hơn nửa phần thế kỷ. Dân Việt lầm than âm ỷ hận thù Việt Nam ngày nay như một nhà tù Tù ngoài xã hội tù trong tâm hồn. FADM Chester Nimitz commented on the performance of sailors and (especially) Marines at Iwo Jima, by saying: “Uncommon valor was a common virtue.” That unequalled accolade is forever and prominently enshrined on the Corps’ War Memorial in Arlington. Those precise words, conveying exactly what “peerless Nimitz” intended, could also be said about Marines’ stellar performances during the Battle of Hue City. Moreover, our Army and ARVN brothers-in-arms sacrificed heroically to recapture Vietnam’s ancestral capital. Of course, that’s now over fifty years ago - and contemporary America generally has a shamefully short memory - however, the valor, the tenaciousness, the leadership, and the sacrificial teamwork of the Marines at Hue can - and will - never be forgotten.

Reading through the posted word of commandments.My uncle ALSO served in the Marine Corps.64-68.My dad's younger brother.My father served in Korea,lied about his age,because all of his buddies,a few years older were either drafted,or enlisting.My mom's baby brother,was drafted and served with the 101st Lima Co.Rangers.My cousin was a Sea-Bea,deep sea diver,USS SAGINAW...Nearly killed in the. Beirut bombing in 82'. Me?- I'm nearly paralyzed as a disabled veteran.With this,being said.We are Afro-Native Americans,and I cannot leave out my grandfather's brothers who ALL three,served in ww2,in WHITE UNITS being NATIVE AMERICAN/SWISS-Germans.And I also served.How...??? Why.What gives people the audacity to strike and kill another American with the stars and stripes,and call themselves,patriotic Americans while beating and killing fellow Americans who swore to uphold the constitution while beating them with the American Flag....---???REALLY---

The real honour would have been that America did not go to war against Vietnam, a whole people could have been distinguished from the medal of honour in the eyes of the world and in the eyes of history! This in no way detracts from the bravery of this man who was distinguished, but so many sacrifices for so little, what a waste!!!!
@jdenmark1287

your simplistic reductionist argument has little validity. You could as easily say, if North Vietnam had not invaded South Vietnam, or if China had not pushed communism upon an entire ethnic group for their selfish reasons. Or if Vietnamese didn't harass the Montagnards (Dega) or if the Chinese/Vietnamese upper class didn't treat the lower class poorly etc. In other words, there were a lot of reasons war took place in that country, America had some part to play, but next to the Vietnamese, paid the highest burden too.

@@jdenmark1287 There was more reason for China to have a role to play in Vietnam than the USA, because culturally and geographically this is understandable, now and for geopolitical reasons, the USA wanted to have and maintain influence in a region where it didn't have much, it was a chess game in which they were checkmated.
