So you actually think it was a coincidence that the initials of the song happened to spell out LSD? Christ, use your head. Even consider that John simply lied about the fact it was based on a painting Julian showed him?

I believe it. I think if that if the song actually was inspired by lsd, John would have admitted it.

It was about a painting Julian made in nursery school. ...read The Beatles. A Hard. Day"s Write. By Steve Turner. ..Pg194..it even has a photo of son's drawing. Such a good book to have about all the Beatles songs.!!!

Mr. Levy, fabulous commentary and so accurate about radio stations playing the LP from beginning to end when this just wasn't done at the time. So many firsts from printed lyrics and not having an inner sleeve that was advertising for other artists on the label to a foldout cover, which was almost mandatory for albums from that time forward.

I love the Beatles! I grew up with them. Sgt. Pepper isn't my favorite album from the Beatles that honor goes to Revolver, with Rubber Soul coming in second then Abbey Road. One thing I will always remember though, about that summer in 1967 was coming home one day and hearing the title song of the album blasting out from somebody's radio. It sounded different, it sounded like the singer was yelling instead of singing. To me that was radical. I couldn't make out what he was saying until I got closer. And I heard the words...., " they've been going in and out of style, but they guarantee to raise a smile." It sounded great.

I know they won't mention this fact, but without The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, there would be no Sgt Pepper. After hearing Pet Sounds twice, it inspired Lennon and McCartney to go that extra mile. It's a shame SMiLE didn't come out in '67 as originally planned. Even in its incomplete form, it was just as ambitious as Sgt Pepper.

"Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" were the first two songs recorded for "Sgt. Pepper", but because the listening public was getting antsy for new Beatles music, the two songs were released as a single unto themselves. Too bad that Beatle fans were not more patient.

The most influential album in music history. Facts: Lucy In The Sky was about a school picture drawn by Julian Lennon (about whom "Hey Jude" aka Jules was written). these people know nothing. And, re John/Jesus, what John said was that young people worshiped the Beatles more than they did Jesus- not that they should. That was horse manure. Best band that ever was.

"Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" has NOTHING to do with LSD/drugs! That guy is wrong!!! The title came from John’s son, Julian. It was a classmate of his son. She not too long ago passed away. The story goes: Julian bought home a picture that he had done in class. He showed his father and John said, "What is this?" Julian answered: "Don’t you know? It’s Lucy. Lucy in the Sky with diamonds." That is where the tittle came from unless the announcer wants to say that Julian as a child was on drugs. He’s silly! (The TV announcer who supposedly had all the answers.) Ask Paul! He’s still here! He backed up John’s story about that song.

Was Mr. Duthiers throwing shade at The Beatles or the year 1967 when he said, "...back in June 1967, the start of the so-called Summer of Love...?" Joe Levy didn't place Lennon's comment that "The Beatles were more popular than Jesus" in context. Needed to refer back to the complete Evening Standard interview by Maureen Cleave that showed that comment in the context of the discussion. Also, Lennon invented the term "Flanging" which was pretty cool. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is NOT about LSD. It is a shame that Revolver's "Tomorrow Never Knows" doesn't get the recognition for being the revolutionary change in music that is assigned to Sgt. Pepper. (Well Mad Men did acknowledge that truth.) Just imagine if Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane had been included on Pepper like originally intended. This new mix by Giles Martin remedies that omission. It's worth it to listen to the Mono Mix and the updated Stereo Mix. Just amazing.

There is no way 1967 was 50 years ago. Must be a plot of the CIA or the Illuminati or Bilderbergers. Anyway Sgt. Pepper was an awesome album then and is now. Ranking it the greatest album ever is sort of like naming Citizen Kane the greatest movie ever - largely based on technical innovations - except that I have listened to and enjoyed Sgt. Pepper an innumerable number of times and Citizen Kane put me to sleep in about 30 minutes. "Imagine there's no Beatles - you couldn't if you tried."
