Man this was a good review of this kayak. Brother you are right I have not seen a kayak with the option to change the pedal drive. That's what I really like the most about this kayak. I also really like how light it is & the weight capacity that it can handle. With me being a big dude at 300 pounds I need a kayak that can handle me and my gear. I just wish they would make a wider pedal for people like me with extremely wide feet. My feet will not stay on a pedal that is 3 or 4 in wide & I know I can't be the only one out here with a wide foot. Well maybe the only one with a foot that is 6 inches wide. I like the rod holders up front & at a good price too. Thank you for doing this video brother. Hope everything is going well for you and you have a good weekend.

Besides Hobie… what is the best premier kayak brand? I heard Old Town makes the best PDL drive system and the Old Town Salty PDL is the fastest pedal kayak made (although it’s not the most stable) with it’s sleek hull design

@@greg6162 Hobie established their position as "the best" way back when they were pretty much the only game in town for rotomolded kayaks. Nowadays, they're still the most recognized brand, but actually being "the best" could be debated. Old Town, Native, and Jackson, among others, have made tremendous strides in quality control and innovation while Hobie mostly rested on their laurels until fairly recently, finally introducing a reverse in some of their drives a few years ago and introducing new products like the Fiesta series more recently. Meanwhile, many other brands have at least caught up to Hobie in quality control, and in some cases surpassed them in innovation and hull design, for half the price. All that said and to answer your question, Old Town's Sportsman and Salty PDL's are REALLY nice boats, as is Native's Slayer and FeelFree's Lure...and, while still expensive, none of them are near what Hobie's cost. @@lexwaldez Loving it! I still prefer the propeller drive because I mostly use it to fish stumpy lakes, but the fin drive gets its' share of play, too, and it's been growing on me! I stopped by Hammerhead last week and put my eyes and hands on the Whale Shark for the first time, too! It's pretty much an upsized next gen Bull Shark and it's a BEAST! 13' long, 37" wide, 605 lb weight capacity, 3 position adjustable seat, and an expandable rudder...I want one! Riot kayaks have one that I have bin waiting for it's release , it's called the Mako 10 Versa which I think is on there website , I like the shorter kayaks for myself. Nice video by the way.

On that fin drive system, could you not rotate that adapter around to move the pedals closer to you? That would keep the seat position further back and better balance the boat for your weight.

I have the same propeller prop for my Van Hunks Shad. I had to fill it with oil to get it to perform as good as my propeller driver on my Slayer Max. Vanhunks kayak also has interchangeable fin/propeller drive system. This kayak seems better because the Shad is only a 10'4" for 1600. I wish I would have seen this kayak a month ago

I love my shad, 10'4 is absolutely perfect size and the shad is probably one of the most stable kayaks out there... I got mine for 1200 tho

@@nathanfleming46 I was able to get the floor model for 1200 out the door, snatched it up quick fast...it's an absolutely awesome kayak, I have both drives for it (my fin drive is used 90% of the time) ..you can stand and fish even in choppy water or boat wakes, the kayak is stable as stable gets....in the ocean the hull stays 100% dry because every bolt and screw into the kayak goes into inlayed screw holes... I raised the seat 5 inches which is perfect, upgraded the rudder cables to stainless cable instead of Paracord (cost 8bucks) the smaller size allows it to turn on a dime after everything is adjusted correctly....

The 480 weight capacity includes the weight of the boat/drive. So 480 weight capacity minus ~87 for boat/drive and 280 for the person means you can bring 113lbs of gear. Unless you want to keep all the fish you catch in which case you may just want to keep it to 100 lbs.

The slot for the trolling motor mount could also be a nice place to put a kayak cart. I would opt for one of those if they were available. Also does the seat have adjustable height? i thought i saw another hammerhead kayak that had 3 height adjustments.

I kind of forget, but I think if you take the weight capacity you have to subtract the weight of the yak. So 480 lb capacity less (let's call it 60 lbs) so 420 lbs to work with. Take 75% of that for certain self-baililng weight puts you at about 315 lbs self-bailing weight capacity which is very solid. Regarding stability that primary stability looks good. What's the secondary stability like? Is it all primary and zero secondary? Thank you for the great review. I hadn't heard of Hammerhead and it looks interesting. I wonder if a drive down to Alabama might not be a good idea to get a test paddle in if they offer them.

Hey mate, love the review, we have a strikingly similar model here in Australia, likely from the same manufacturer. I noticed in your video you said the seat base covers part of the inspection hatch when you have it positioned comfortable for the flap drive to be used, just wondering are you about 6' tall? I am just working out my leg length and seat position whether if I can fit a decent cooler behind the seat, rather than in the rear most storage space behind the flush mount rod holders. I am on the cusp of buying one so appreciate any feedback. I am 6ft tall and 230lbs so thinking this might be perfect for my height and weight.

Glad to see they have replaced the old plastic bottom pins to metal ones. So many companies that use the old Hobbie design use the plastic and have them break repeatedly. An obvious flaw that should be replaced. Awesome to see them fixing that flaw that other companies have not done yet.

Prop has instant reverse but lacks torque and requires a little more effort. Find do not have reverse but has more torque, and can get in shallower water.
