Everything you need to know about the Hobie Lynx before buying it. I have owned my Hobie Lynx for over a year now and in this video I am going to go over all of the good and bad that I have experienced while owning this kayak. This video is a full Hobie Lynx review.

WOW am I glad I watched this video before pulling the trigger on buying a Lynx! I had a Pro Angler & it was great HOWEVER the 140 lbs was just too much! I saw the Lynx & 50lbs, I was so excited! I was a bit unhappy with the "Wet Aspect" but I can get rod holders, dry bag & somehow work something for tackle. I agree, for the price it should come with at least H brackets! BUT then the UGLY that was pointed out concerning the stress cracks & ease of damaging the bottom has made me reconsider the purchase! Thanks for pointing out the Pros & Cons! Saved me $3500+!

Your review is exactly what I would have said. I have this kayak and love it, but you are correct it is extremely delicate, I dropped it from my tail bed and punctured a hole. I also added a seat riser but that punctured it too. The stability and control are great, Hobie should reinforce the bottom and I would definitely buy another one.

The Lynx is a fiberglass surf board/paddle board with a last coat of plastic vacuum formed onto it. Treat it like a surf board (or the Hobie Eclipse) and it is fine. Likely the "paddle board with a seat" as its design, is why no H-rails and just T-tracks and hold down points. Keeps it as a fancy paddle board for some customers. On the upside, it is easy to repair like any surf board. You could rip the front off and epoxy it back together with some fiber glass strips and filler like the surf guys do. My hull alone with H-rails and Hobie deck matt is 62lbs on my scale. Similar to my Eclipse weight.

Hobie doesn't include the H-Rails and Turbo Fins because, like you said, that's the first thing everyone goes and purchases from them after buying the kayak. Plus, again like you said, everyone also has to go and reinforce the vulnerable areas (a lot of them) so they're spending another little bundle to make it more durable. I started saving for this kayak not long after it was first released. Since then it has gone up in price exponentially. I can't justify paying that much for a kayak anymore. I won't use it nearly enough to justify that. So, I'm looking for the next lightest, pedal drive kayak, that has good fishability. I wish this was a practical option for me, but it's just not. Thanks a bunch for your review.

Try a pelican 110 , 130 or their getaway (similar style to this Hobie). They are durable and a third of the price. If you find yourself kayaking more you can always upgrade. But if you find yourself not getting on the water as often as you’d like you won’t have buyers remorse and have saved thousands of dollars

I'll take the fragility of the kayak as I'll just patch it up as needed. I'll be testing it out this week on a trip to the Frio River. Only been out on a lake with it and it performs great there. Great review, on target. I’ve used mine for a year, in freshwater lakes, and I love it, I’m a car topper. On hull protection, I went cheap and it’s worked very well- 1” wide automotive self adhesive trim stripping from Amazon applied to the keel line and bow and near the bottom edge each side, at the chine. I trimmed each end of each strip into a tapered point for bet water flow and so the end of the strip didn’t catch on anything. The strips have done their job and would be a cinch to replace if they did fall off. $30 for 25 ft roll. Also good are the extended stern drag strips from Navarre Kayak Fishing, replacing the original ones, they protect the stern more when maneuvering the kayak around during loading/unloading from the car top or cart. A cheap milk crate and fabric side pockets on the side of the seat take care of my storage needs. Yes, this kayak is overpriced but to me nothing else compares in terms of light weight combined with its performance and capabilities.

This is intriguing. I have a native slayer max and have been seriously looking at something lighter since I’m 47 and my shoulders and ankles aren’t what they used to be. @@TWC6724 Can't beat the Hobie itek9 for low weight easy of carry. 20 lbs hull on it. It's also a bit cheaper. They are easy to inflate with an $80-ish Amazon SUP electric pump. I was worried about seams failing on it so I went with the Lynx. They are the similar kayaks but hardshell or inflatable. Paddleboarders claim seam repair is easy to re-glue but I wasn't sure for long term use and storage. Otherwise the Lynx is pretty light and I hand carry mine 75 yards to a shed I have in a field (with some max effort to not stop to rest as it is still awkward to hold).

Great information. I'm picking up my Lynx tomorrow. I'm getting the H-Rail and a bunch of other accessories. It would be nice if they had a premium option for the Lynx. An excellent review that confirmed my initial suspicions about using this boat for fishing. Too fragile, and noisy/wet in mild chop will not work for frequent use, one hour of that slappy racket that paddle boards make would drive me nuts. It would be a perfect lightweight option for fishing in Rhode Island saltwater estuaries in good conditions, but I fish a lot, and 4k$ rigged for a specialty kayak that I would not use on every outing is a no-go for me. Going to pass on the Lynx and seek another semi-lightweight option, unless I can find a used one at a steep discount in the future. Thanks for posting this useful info!

Great points all the way around. The hull is WAY too soft. I added thin kydex (heat up with a hair dryer in order for it to conform) to the bottom just to keep the hull from being punctured. As for the accessories, Hobie is just other nickle & dime operation for each item. They should include the rails and the Turbo fins for the cost of this hybrid. $180 for a set of Turbo fins is ridiculous. $3200 + Tax for this is on the verge of unacceptable for all the reasons posted above.

I'm hoping people are wrong about the quality of the hull but I did buy a 3M hull protector. I love my Lynx but it's partly because I'm one of the few people that use it for mothershipping on a boat. The fatigue marks on the sides could be from carrying the kayak by the H-Rail. Like you said, the shell is thin, so carrying the kayak by a single H-Rail could be torquing the mounting rails, and stressing the shell.

Thanks for the review, it shows I put my pereguard and burley keel guard in the right spots 😂. I can honestly say I don't want the H-rails, and my lynx is set up better than any lynx I can find on the internet imo. I use the yakgadget flex rod stager system where the h-rail would be and a modified double header to hold power pole and paddle. I made my own seat bars to give enough room to put a dewalt 2 drawer tough box with plano edge terminal box on top. I have watersnake t24 motor setup in the pedal drive controlled by pwm with a very small remote box attached to rudder steering knob with foward/reverse switch and throttle. Flambeau tough crate bottom holds 100ah lifepo4 battery box with all the quick connects, pwm remote wires, fish finder and power pole. Made custom 3600 box and tool holders out of abs plastic that bolt onto the sides of the seat for extra tackle. I had all winter to build my perfect kayak that was easy to set up /throw on top of a suv, and i wouldn't trade it for any other kayak.

Good review! I like the sound of a shallow storage bin but I feel like it’s not doable with the hull being do thin. I don’t thinking fitting it in would be the issue so much as accounting for the depth of a hatch+bin really be compromising hull strength, especially with that super thin soft plastic shell.

Take a 2x6 drill 2 1 inch holes side by side , at each end and tie 2 tether balls or small beach balls by wraping the rope at 4 equal places areund the balls and pull tight. . Put the 2x6 across the top of a canoe and secure with 2 bungies attaced under the middle seat. . makes the canoe stable enough for the kids to dive off the end of the board. probably work the same with a kayak

Thank you sir for your objective analysis and fare comments. This saves me from buying one. I kayak as a job coming in and out of boats at least 4 times a week. This platform will brake in the very first trip. Another thing to add to your observations is that the pedal system is extremely weak and when it breaks due to friction you have to buy almost a new pedal system. I have the old pedals that have a center axis made out of stainless steel 316L. That lasts for ever. Hobie cheaped out on these pedals. I pedal around 8 hours a day. So the new pedals will not last. Thanks again!

I have a PA14 already: not getting rid of PA but looking to add the Lynx as an alternative when the conditions are right and to have something to use if I need an extra boat. I would probably put the extra person in my PA and rock the Lynx. Also I drive a 4Runner that’s lifted on 35s. I don’t like having to have a trailer with me all the time. PA14s are stored in a toy hauler in grand isle….. Lynx would give me something highly mobile and take 2 hours off my drive time so I wouldn’t have to go get it in GI then back track to PAC

I do not agree that the Lynx is a wise fishing platform. Come on, it is paddle board material. It isn't made for fishing. I have a couple of Outbacks and Passports. They are durable boats. The Outback is excellent for fishing. Use the right kayak for the activity.

It's seems to have the same construction as a fiberglass surfboard with a final sheet of plastic thermoformed over all of it as a last manufacture step. It'd have to be cared for nearly as well as a surfboard. But it's as easy to fix as a surfboard if you don't care how perfect it looks after the repair.
@dmnguye69
@dmnguye69 Жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree that this kayak will get you wet. Totally correct that it will be a wet kayak given it's low hull design and everything on the kayak will be wet. However the person riding it will actually be more dry than an outback. You're sitting on a higher elevation and you're not so low like the outback so any water splashing on the lynx won't get you as easily. The hull on the lynx is slow narrow that when water hits it, it goes over the deck and drains out and won't make a big of a splash as an outback who's hull is thick giving it more surface area for the splash affect. I owned both so I'm speaking from experience. Another "good" thing about this kayak is that the repair is more solid than that of an outback. So you get scratch, gouge, etc, patch it up with putty weld, and it's not going to sink. You get a crack plastic hull on an outback and that is a huge deal. Overall you are spot on with the rest of the other comparison, it really depends on individual and tradeoffs that they're willing to make. I sold my outback and went with the lynx full time. The 47 lb hull is a game changer for tossing it on your car and just go fishing, fast, light and easy on you. The heavier the kayak and gears, to me it's the mental and physical hassle of lugging it around and actually makes you somewhat more lazy not to go :)

Why, because they make more money by not adding H-Rails etc. They know that we (yes, I did too) are going to buy them anyway.

You forgot the price… Thing is wayyyy overpriced! They basically made a $2-300 kayak and added a peddle drive system, and I mean this in the nicest way I possibly can but that kayak is worth max $7-800 and that’s pushing it!

😂 you are out of touch with reality. You can’t find the cheapest kayaks available for those prices much less something suitable for fishing

Hobie can pound sand. They were the best, but now there are better, less expensive, and more rugged options out there now.

Yeah, I've gone from wanting an Outback to a Lynx, now I'm looking at an Old Town 120 PDL or possibly or a Vanhunks Pro Angler (for half the price).

I've owned 3 Hobies and still own 2 of them. This is by far the worst quality that Hobie has ever put out. I also fish out of a stand up paddleboard and so the Lynx was appealing to me. After seeing this video, im apalled at the lack of quality in the build. To spend thousands on a yak, to then have to DIY reinforcement is a joke and Hobie should be embarassed. I'll stick to my 2015 Outback with GT drive and 2016 Quest 13... Hobie gone downhill, over priced and under perform

You are talking about inflatable SUPs? They can easily take rock hits or dragging. The hardshell paddle boards (Hobie, Bote) are just as fragile as the Lynx. Similar to fiberglass surfboards in my opinion. Not suitable for all fishermen for sure. I like that my Lynx weighs nothing compared to my Revo13 due to how it is built.

I have one and I agree 100%.. I've been on mine 4 times and would not buy again. Just too flimsy, no where to put anything except my ass. Not fun because of the lack of storage and flimsiness of the thing. It iwon't last 2 years and what's the point of adding 29 or 30 lbs of hull protection. It's a POS in my book.
