NATTO.... it is basically the ultimate Japanese supporting dish. It is fermented soybean. Usually that makes Tofu if solidified, but the Japanese process stop halfway between Soybean turning into Tofu, it is like like a sticky soybean paste. it is smelly and squishy, but extremely delicious if you grew up on it. Normally seen on toast, eaten with rice, maybe use in soup... etc.

The actions of his son, to me, demonstrates the first weakness of Toranaga's approach and position in warfare. We've all praised him for being a tactical genius, rightly. Because he is suspicious of everybody, which usually helps in most situations, he doesn't bring his own son properly into the fold, like some other lords would and he is ultimately semi-guilty for the actions of his son. It was obvious from previous interactions that his son felt alienated and wanted to prove himself. If Toranaga had been warmer and more trusting, there wouldn't have been space for this turn of events. As we know, everybody's outlook, even the smartest, has strengths and weaknesses.
@khaii138 ай бұрын
I get what you’re saying, but there is no such thing as “perfect parenting”, especially in a feudal setting like that. Its war time, so there really is no time for soft parenting: what if Tokugawa (toranaga) did bring his son into his confidence and his tongue slipped and he accidentally says something to the wrong person? So his parenting style is forcing his son to learn to think on his feet, which, as we saw, has its drawbacks.
@dylanblue22718 ай бұрын
I hear you. I just think it's important to acknowledge that Toranaga isn't perfect. I've seen a lot of people hero-worshipping the character, but for me, that cheapens it a bit. He's a very smart, strategic man but he's not a God and I don't want him to feel like a God in the narrative. I want jeapardy, so that his clever actions means something. His aloofness sometimes helps him, and sometimes costs him.@@khaii13

This show is really good. I love the fact that it goes harder into making the Japanese characters have more agency, than in the 80s version. I really want to like Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne, but he can't hold a candle to Richard Chamberlain's performance. Cosmo Jarvis feels like a thug, while Chamberlain felt like Blackthorne in the novel - refined for a European at the time, which helps him understand Japan in a way his fellow Europeans don't. However, Anna Sawai is a revelation as Mariko. In this version, you *_really_* get the feeling that there is more to her than meets the eye. Great performance!
@Barlofontain8 ай бұрын
I did wonder if it would be picked up, because it was brushed over so quickly, but Mariko is denying that she slept with Blackthorne, by implying it was a courtesan and not her This episode was a massive change from the book, (and even what was said in earlier episodes), because Blackthorne does have experience of infantry fighting, his own documents talk about them raiding Portugese forts and trading posts, on the way to Japan The book has a demonstration showing that trained muskets will beat a much larger force armed with swords, which leads to a much more grizzly end for Jozen than was shown here And unless they've reordered the events and it's in next week's episode, they've skipped a HUUUUGE part of Blackthorne's development
@JunKang8 ай бұрын
I think it's because (as stated in this episode AND in real history) Japan have already been using muskets effectively for 50 years. Whether muskets or cannons, Blackthorn is still demonstrating and training effective military strategy. I think it's a good change from the book for the purpose of authenticity. As for the Blackthorn's development, I don't know about that as I haven't read the book, but I really look forward to what would it be 😊
@jormungandr46908 ай бұрын
I think it still works, because essentially he is naval combat expert and those cannons are taking from the naval ships that is why they are not as big, but longer and more precise to make them work vs infantry you load a chain inside also used in naval battle the same way. So he is different from the book, but he is faithful to what he was shown to be in the show a naval officer basically

Back in college I was taught that one of the main difficulties of cannon was that they rolled back after each shot and had to be reaimed before you could shoot again. Until the 1890s when the French invented a 75 mm cannon with a recoil absorbing mount that would return the gun to its original position each time so you could hit the same spot all day without redoing the aim. I sat and thought about the situation they were in for a long time. There's only one resolution I could think of. The problem was that they had that man that the counsel wanted to come and pledge allegiance... I think they're smartest move would have been for him to get killed and the army to move.. then they wouldn't actually have declared war, The guys who had written up wouldn't have seen a lot the cannon capability- only that they were training on the cannon, and it might be better than before. With Blackthorn involved, there's always the possibility that anything could be happening because they don't understand him or know why he would do what he does. So he could be teaching them cannons because he had to teach them something and that's the only thing he knew (true) They wouldn't actually have any proof that it was effective
