I've been studying Japanese costuming on an amateur basis for a long time. This production makes me so happy - and not a little jealous. I haven't said "Yeah, I'd wear that" this much since I watched "Kagemusha."

I clearly have no ties to Japan, but the fact that he mentioned how they even looked into symbolism and how location would affect clothing is something I think I'd be way more concerned about than changing a style to fit a mood or theme. It's like Mr. Rosario noted, being as informed as possible and aware of the goals. "We're not making somethin for the history channel" really sometimes people like him should if the reaction vids I've seen ehre and there to that topic ever comes into play XD I just heard about a shop in Japan that uses leftover scraps from Kimono craft to make custom shoes...speaking of using scraps. And I have to admit the thing that's really taken my breath away is how absolutely STUNNING the fabric patterns are and how much they stand out. All I could think was: this is just like a painting. I thought there was no way in the world that much could be authentic as elaborate as some patterns I've seen get. but look at how wrong I was! I adore hearing how departments work together. I was just thinking about fabrics involved in prop and set work when he started talking about person working on textiles. Your comment on how costume help movements, I was JUST thinking that watching episode four and watching the measured steps of the ladies which was restrained as much by layers as footware and social cue. Oh interested about the feather cloak as that had standed out as interesting but something that looked odd for things I knew. So it's cool to know that my eye was a little on that. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Loved this a lot.

Hi Cassie, thank you so much for commenting. I found a lovely example of a feather covered Jinbaori (war coat) from the Met Museum in my Shogun trailer reaction video that I shared.

thank you for all the hardwork Carlos.. the costumes are excellent, especially the soldiers, look very real.. it's like being there and seeing real japanese soldiers with armor, not some actors with costumes.. thank you for the interview Heidi 🙏🏻

Great interview and insight into the designing process! I do wonder, though (and, just to be clear, this is in no way meant to question or undermine CS's wonderful work on this series. Clearly he was more than up to the task! I'd say it's more of a genuine question to the producers that came to him) - especially in view of the ongoing discussion about representation in Hollywood, I wonder why wasn't a Japanese designer selected for the job. Wouldn't it be easier to hire someone who already has a background in Japanese historical clothing, who could then focus their time mainly on how to represent the story through the costumes (instead of someone who had to FIRST learn all about Japanese historical clothing from scratch and THEN take a creative storytelling approach to it. So it's like double effort for the person)? Maybe it has something to do with the unionising rules or something that CS mentions when he talks about the beginning of his career? I'm genuinely curious about that. Again, my curiosity is in no way a reflection on CS's achievement in the series, I absolutely love it and he seems so humble and respectful in his approach and in regards to his team of coworkers!

Do the Avatar the last airbender tv show. Their costumes look like they came fresh out of the sewing machine. I think they wanted to save on cleaning costs cause they're too clean. Blood all over the faces of their actors and pristine white collars 😂
