High born women would train how to fight as they were expected to be able to defend themselves and their home while their husbands were off fighting wars
@nullakjg7677 ай бұрын
I dont think it was common for noble women to also be warriors. The women who were trained for combat were considered to be part of the warrior class and fought alongside samurai in battle. They actually wore armor. All the women who came across that assassin in toranagas quarters didnt put up a fight whatsoever.
@Knight-Bishop7 ай бұрын
@@nullakjg767 Those were attendants and servants, though. Yes, there were female samurai, but the onna bushi themselves were also martially trained with samurai weapons. They usually did not have swords unless they were heirlooms, but they knew how to use them, polearms, and bows.

@@nullakjg767 Noblewomen didn't join their men on the battlefield, but they _did_ take up naginatajutsu and kyujutsu (naginata fighting and archery). Whilst the lords were the heads of their households, the ladies were the managers, which often required them to learn "home defense" skills (as the OP said).

Apparently the diving lesson scene in the book is an important bit of allegory because diving headfirst instead of feetfirst wasn’t really done in Japan at the time and it has some parallel about the different views between feudal Japan and European concerning mortality

I only recently found out what a Hatamoto was before seeing this and couldn't help but laugh at his "oh" when "a great honor" didn't quite explain "you've been knighted as a high lord commander" to him.
@dan323217 ай бұрын
I was slow on the uptake, but Toranaga intentionally wore Blackthorne out with all those dives before he challenged him to race. It's a nice if very subtle bit of character building: Always planning, always thinking multiple steps ahead. He's a great character.
@andrewward58917 ай бұрын
Toranaga has Blackthorn dive repeatedly to tire him out to make sure Toranaga wins the race to the shore. He doesn’t want Blackthorn to let him win but he still manipulates the odds in his favor. It shows how strategic Toranaga is.

Almost all noble male characters in this show are samurai. Samurai are a warrior class. Easiest way to tell who the Samurai are. Without armor, all the men who have the shaved top head and two swords on their waist are Samurai. All the lords are Samurai. In armor, all warriors wearing beautifully ornate armor and helmets are Samurai. For normal foot soldiers, they are the ones with the wide cone farmer looking hat. They are Ashigaru. Basically the peasant soldiers. For how Mariko can fight, noble women married to samurai lords or retainers are normally trained to fight to protect their homes and family when their husbands are out fighting.
@davidribeiro10647 ай бұрын
At this point the edict of separation had been issued. There were no peasant warriors and the Ashigaru were professional soldiers, part of the samurai, or buke, class.
@doleofdolonia88597 ай бұрын
@@davidribeiro1064 Yes. That is true. But overall, they were still lower class warriors below the Samurai. Their skills may or may not be on par but they would probably still lose their heads if they try to challenge a samurai by sheer peer pressure from society.

If I recall correctly, the Japanese tended to jump in feet first. So head-first diving was something different. Cultural reasons, I believe. Obviously, the inhabitants of an island country would have thousands of years of jumping into the ocean.

The actress who played Mariko had a issue with the combat scenes, the Kimono she was wearing dosn't allow her to move sufficiently to fight, so they adapted the Kimono so she could fight.

I find it funny how they were hating on Buntaro even though every mention of him says how bad ass he is. The setting is 1600s Japan. What did they expect from 1600s Japanese warrior lords? One just doesn’t become a general to someone like Toranaga.
