Shogun is a masterpiece. Sanadas is truly transcendent with the authority and charisma to reach out of the screen, and have me willing to walk off a cliff for him. However, Anna Sawai's portrayal of Mariko is not only the best acting I have seen all year, it’s some of the best acting I have ever seen. Building on one of the most incredible, strong, and complex characters ever put to paper, the show was able to elevate Mariko into new dimensions; the writers gave Mariko focus and stoicism, and Sawai gave her heart and raw, unbridled power. Not many people can believably play a one-person army able to topple an empire. What a lightning storm of a performance she gives in episode 9, and all throughout this series. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of an Emmy. Having read and loved the book, I found myself excited and yet apprehensive when I first heard about the new adaptation. Ultimately, I resigned myself to being thrilled if they don’t mess it up. By giving it the love and care the story needed, I had no idea they might actually outshine the book. Thank you both for making that happen. I have written this elsewhere on KZbin so sorry for repeating but I think it needs to be recognized. Shogun is operating on a totally different level with production, writing, and especially acting setting new standards. Samara and Sawai each give performances strong enough to carry the entire series on their own, in a show that stands confidently by itself. And someone, please arrest Moeka Hoshi (Fuji) for stealing so many damn scenes and everyone’s heart.

just finish watching shogun. its like going back in the past. i love history and watching this show makes you know the culture and tradition of japan in 1600. how noble the samurai was and the most important lesson i get is when the gardener die because he took the rotting pheasant even if blackthorne warn them that whoever takes it will die. his warning to him bears no seriousness but to the japanese, its an iron clad rule because "our word give it a meaning".

The original Shogun with Richard Chamberlain was done in Japanese with absolutely minimal subtitles, because the directors wanted the audience to experience things as Blackthorn did....not understanding a lot of what was said...and then learning along the way. what a great show this is and how historically accurate it is, only thing that i could point out is that while the show is mostly spoken in Japanese, the English lines that are spoken are actually Portuguese since English was not a thing back then, for international audience sake it was better to be done like this, but now or then at least, some actual Portuguese lines or words should be said considering the fact that many actors reprising the role were actually Portuguese(ex: Joaquim de Almeida), nevertheless amazing show, mad props.
