除了馬之外,最重要的負重動物是牛;還有蒙古人的主要食物,那是羊。就連他們使用的武 器,都和這些動物有著特殊關係。他們懂得如何運用牛皮造出驚人的弓箭。蒙古人在草原上最鮮 明的形象就是騎馬彎弓,他們使用的是「複合反曲弓,弓臂以木材、牛角、動物肌腱等複合材 質製成,將掰彎的材料朝反向再彎折一次,創造出極大的拉力,有效射程可達三百多公尺。 他們另外有就算是大力士也沒辦法一個人彎的弓,通常至少要合兩人之力,才彎得了這種戰 鬥弓。所以真正在攻伐過程中,通常要先準備好幾面彎好的弓,戰士所要做的不是彎弓,毋寧是 放弓,也就是將箭搭上去,瞄準後將卡住滿弓的機制放開,箭就勁射出去。然後放過箭的弓由專 人負責合力再將弓張滿。這樣的弓箭產生的勁道,遠超過阿拉伯世界原本所認識的,自然為蒙古 人帶來巨大的戰力,還有驚嚇的效果。
