I was born in Shum Shui Po and have been in the USA for many years. I went to St. Francis Xavier College, ate at Oi Man Sang, watched movies in New World Cinema in the 60s and 70s. No other part of Hong Kong or Kowloon was more magical nor superior as a training ground for my later life. Thank you!
I remember in the 60's fishing in shumshuipo pier, with couple kids and went down to the float bamboo in the water, almost got drown. history will be different. thank you bring back the memories.

In summer times and particularly late afternoons, the pier was crowded with people to 釣泥鯭。They used bamboo baskets, size slightly larger than a soccer ball with lids at top and sank them into the sea water right next to nullah outlet to catch the fish. Onlookers cheered on when the baskets were raised and everyone scrambled to see what the catch size was, and the nullah (drain) continued to spill out raw sewage with yellow faecal matters, and no one care. That were our good old days.

@@KP-bp2if Yes, in my days in Hong Kong, floating poops were everywhere, even in the turquoise water of Clear Water Bay where we sometimes swam. Now here at 65 in the US and still an avid fisherman, I couldn’t help to be amazed again and again by my memory of cooking and eating those small 泥鯭 we caught off the seawall of Shum Shui Po where probably the entire sewage of that district discharged. I was baptized for life over there.
I was attending 德貞 elementary school when the riots began. The school suddenly announced closing and let all the students out. I, among other kids, also witnessed all the burnings like the picture you showed with the charred vehicle. We were really frightened as we tried to navigate our way home!

Hi Mai Chan, I was in 德貞 kindergarten back then. As my sis could bring me along when she went to 德貞 secondary school. And my auntie was a teacher there too. Then my mom afraid that there would be no secondary school for boy and changed me to Hip Wo primary school with my elder brothers.

Late Lyric composer & all-purpose artist Mr. James Wong Tsim once mentioned he was one the students at Tack Ching Elementary school in the 50’s, ( no boys for secondary)and was deeply inspired by the Shek Kip Mei fire (25/12/1953) and the riots near Garden Bakery (10/10/1956), It influenced him a lot for his great creations.
@12:04 the photo of Nam Cheong St. nullah, anybody know what the rectangular platform type structure at the lower left corner is for? I remember playing on top of one of these at the junction of Boundary St and Cheung Sha Wan St.
