No kidding, I was watching at 5:40 how he instantly made an expressive face, when next thing I know HES GOT SHADOWS DEFINING THE HAT LIKE WTF. He manages to make so much out of so little. The video goes so fast I can't properly take in what he does and I end up pausing every time he finishes a section, it's insane. I'm not usually impressed by art because there are so many good artists out there, but this guy is god damn amazing.

@@ploopybear Look, as much as i like Bob Ross, as an artist, the painting in this video is more impressive to me than what Bob does. Ultimately, though, they're simply different subjects and methods, and can't really be compared well. Although drawing/painting from imagination is usually more difficult than observational drawing, Bob paints landscapes with things like mountains, rocks, trees and so on, which are pretty much the easiest things to paint, with the most room for error out of any subject out there. He doesn't have to accurately replicate anything from reference either, so that again expands the room for error significantly. The techniques he uses for putting down paint are excellent for producing visual shorthands of the things he is painting, such as using white paint on a knife to draw glaciers on mointains, or tapping a knife/wide brush sideways to paint a pine tree, but are also really easy to get good results with. Look up videos of people following his steps, and it's impressive how even absolute beginners can end up with good looking paintings by the end of the episode. Meanwhile, here is an expressive observational figure painting. Humans are arguably the most difficult subject when it comes to room for error, as any irregularity can be blantantly visible due to the way our brains pay extreme attention to the human form.

I see a Kanji moves in his drawing/painting. it is very typical for japan and gives a new perspective.
hm it's kinda weird to put myself in his mindset bc his strokes are both rlly frantic yet controlled and deliberate idk how he manages to not let himself go too far when making quick and loose strokes when i wouldve gone and outlined the entire thing (then again this is watercolour and requires different techniques). It's glaringly obvious how well practiced and knowledgable in the medium he is. This seemed like such a fun study to do, I could feel him enjoying it.
