Wonderful work on this tree Kimi. Isn't it odd that some trees that need humidity live in cold climates that are dry. I struggle with spruce work and you made this look very easy. Thank you for sharing!
@-kimisbonsai- Жыл бұрын
I agree. I don't know why, but in bonsai, the leaves are damaged by drying and the branches die. I can't say anything because the environment is not suitable to begin with ,,,
Hi Kimi, it sure looks a lot better than the beginning, nice job! By the way, in my experience it bends a bit easier during the warmer seasons. I think you're right: it loves water. Watering and feeding it well, results in lots and lots of new buds so I do think the branches are going to be much more dense (if not even too dense...). To be honest: personally I think it's a bit of a disadvantage that it keeps trying to lift up its branches from the moment you take the wires off, so there's a bit of a challenge there. But that's always the case, isn't it...? Good luck and thanks for posting.
@-kimisbonsai- Жыл бұрын
That's right, this tree immediately tries to lift its branches. So I have to call again. But it may always be...😊💦 Your advice is very helpful. The environment may not be suitable, but I will try my best.

Looks fine. I've a red spruce (アカエゾマツ) that are also fun to work with. To my opinion, only Ezo and red spruce are the best spruces to use for bonsai. 😄

@@-kimisbonsai- , would you make a shohin bonsai from Ezo spruce?
@blueridgebonsai9155 Жыл бұрын
Very nice work as usual. Here in the USA ezo spruce is difficult to find and expensive even as seedlings. So I grow Norway Spruce and Colorado Blue Spruce. They also seem to be more suitable for my climate. I am a bit surprised yours does so well in the Tokyo region or are you in Saitama? My understanding is they are found in even colder areas than larch. Good luck with both species.
@-kimisbonsai- Жыл бұрын
Yezo spruce grows wild in the colder parts of Japan, and in Aomori Prefecture, it seems to grow wild higher in the mountains than Japanese larch. I live near Tokyo (30-40 minutes by train to Akihabara), but there are mountains nearby and it's 2-3 degrees colder than in Tokyo.
@blueridgebonsai9155 Жыл бұрын
@@-kimisbonsai- I think that is an important factor for cold loving species. They seem to need cool nights in summer to compensate for warm days and also benefit from colder winters. Although I live in the southern USA I too am in the mountains at about 700 meters elevation. Which is why I believe I have been able to grow larch. The main problem I have is that larch tend to break dormancy quite early, often in February, and then can get damaged by very intense freezes afterwards. We now have an increasing tendency to get very warm temperatures in early spring followed by these late spring freezes as a result of climate change. My Japanese maples are especially sensitive to damage as a result. Consequently I have to spend a lot of time moving these sensitive trees in and out of my garage each spring. I need to make more small mame and shohin trees and fewer large and heavy ones!

@@blueridgebonsai9155 You sound like me, I do the tree dance, my 4" pots I have in a hoop house but some go on the ground which is covered by mulch and many of my small trees go in the garage or in my grow room which is unheated. I am across the street from the ocean and still get snow and below freezing temps. I hear below 26 deg F is the danger zone for pines.
@blueridgebonsai9155 Жыл бұрын
@@steveanacorteswa3979 Depends on the pine species and also whether it is sitting out on a bench in a pot or on the ground and mulched in. My trees were exposed to 0 F last month but I mulched them in and so far they look OK.

Could you comment on what soil you use for various of your bonsai? Here we commonly use mixtures of akadama, pumice, and lava in roughly equal portions. If akadama is not available I will use sifted pine bark, especially for larch and spruce. Because of shipping costs akadama has become very expensive when available.
@-kimisbonsai- Жыл бұрын
Akadama soil seems to be in short supply even in Japan. I will consider a video that introduces soil in the future ^ ^ thank you!

@@-kimisbonsai- I found a video you did 2 years ago on your soil but other than listing the different materials and telling how to wash out the dust you really didn’t cover important details like what proportions of each material go into the final soil mix and how it is varied for different species.
Ezomatsu is my favourite but so difficult to find here in the UK, such beautiful trees! I have 2 small trees and have also taken many cuttings that I am trying to root now. Do you think placing the cuttings on a heat mat will help to speed up root production please?
@-kimisbonsai- Жыл бұрын
Hello 😊 Do you mean to warm the insert bed? I don't know what the result will be, but it looks interesting. I also tried cutting spruce spruce, but I failed. However, you may need to pay attention to the appropriate temperature and breeding of bacteria.
@KurisuBonsai Жыл бұрын
@@-kimisbonsai- Hi Kimi, Thankyou for your reply!! Yes, I am warming the pot and soil in a small propagation box with a clear lid so the humidity is also high. I spray rainwater mist each morning too. I also have Shimpaku in the same box with heat. The soil is 30 Celsius and the air inside is maybe 24C as the temperature is fixed. I worry that the cuttings are not very strong initially too but we must try these things! All my previous spruce cuttings have failed too so let's see how this works. I will keep in the heat until March and check for progress!!
