Hakata-ningyo is said to have originated in 1600, when Kuroda Nagamasa, the leader of the Fukuda clan, arrived at Chikuzen and gathered artisans to his domain. Those artisans began making bisque-fired clay dolls. In the late Edo period, quality dolls were made by skilled craftsmen, and Hakata dolls were marketed throughout the country. A plaster mold is made from the original clay mold, and the bodies are then cast, fired, and the face and clothes are meticulously painted.

I just loved this short story of the artistry you have made your life's work. I have a few of the much less quality Hakata Urasaki dolls made in the l950's that were rather like folk figures of ordinary people. Even these humble clay figures, sold by the crate load decades ago, are found in homes, passed down from the last generation. I realize what I have does not compare to the work you do, but I must now say, I've gained new appreciation for the absolute discipline of your craftsmanship. Thank you for the contribution to the history by making these videos. You have made my heart glad. My China cabinet has 40 years worth of humble hakata dolls, a soft light at night, playing upon these figures makes them seem to come to life.

I'm fascinated by your videos, the only thing wrong with them it's that they are too short! 😁

A complex elaboration! From the initial drawing to the clay model, then the plaster mold in several parts, the stamping on this mold and the obtaining of the figurine which will be deburred, sanded, baked and enamelled ... A creative work of great beauty, congratulations to the artists and the production of this remarkable little film; thank you very much from French Brittany
