I'm an outside service provider for UHAUL, Penske, Ryder, etc. II run atleast 4 calls per month in my area because the UHAUL rep helped hook the trailer to the vehicle, only for it to come unhitched an hour later going down the road. The one yesterday, was a car dolly. When it came unhitched, the dolly and the Cadillac mounted on it rolled past the guy hauling it in the opposite lane

fun fact: uhaul actually DESIGNED their business model to be ran as a second source of income out of other stores. gas stations, garages, hotels, etc.. very rarely will you come accross a dedicated uhaul facility. source: i worked at a dedicated uhaul store

My second experience was renting a truck and driving it 22 miles, putting five gallons of gas back in it only for them to tell me I needed put in ten more or they would charge me....the worst large company I ever delt with and I avoid them and all costs now

Doesn’t just happen in the south. Ran into the same thing in Ontario Canada. Uhaul was located at a gas station. They had no motorcycle trailers. I had to drive 25 miles to a strip mall in a small town. When I got there there was no one at this tiny office. I had to phone a number and wait 20 minutes for a guy to show up, fill out paperwork and unlock the trailer I needed. It amazes me that a company as big as u-haul gets away with that.

Got one in my town, bfe Oklahoma, at an old old sonic turned used car dealer turned whatever. I swear ive never seen anyone move anything from there b there are uhauls there. Tried to reserve one time, said show up, i showed up no one there, no one amswering phone. Everybody in town knows not to use it, yet it still magically exists

My neighbor got a rental car. Took her 3 hours to get her account set up by some individual in another state with a weird name like "premium rentals" or something but the company was his name. Sending drivers license and scanning documents in the app to get set up. Then we went to go get it and it was a 45 minute drive to back behind a Planet Fitness parking lot in the back, there were like 6 random cars ranging from 2012-2018 all different brands. Key was in a realtor's lock box on the gate. Then she had to log in on the app to give access to her GPS before she could start the car and drive off. I had to wait another 15 minutes for that because I didn't want to leave her there. She's like 75 years old and not great with technology. Real shady, just like this. She had a 2016 base hyaundai elantra or something like that. Old cruddy car.

Wow. Yup. I miss stores like that. Here, I went to the local U-Haul store a few years back, with a reservation for a trailer, and the guy at the counter looked at my paperwork and said, "You have a mechanic's letter saying your truck can pull this?" I said, "What?" He said because my truck is more than 30 years old he needs a letter from my mechanic saying that the radiator, engine, suspension, transmission, et cetera and so forth all listed separately, are in good shape to tow a trailer. I said, "It's 5:30, the online reservation system didn't say anything about this, I've been renting trailers regularly here for years and never heard about this, and maybe you can call my mechanic and talk to him but I need the trailer tonight because it it's a we-need-it-gone-now deal." He said, "You don't understand, I'm not calling anybody. You need to call your mechanic and get a letter." What I didn't say, and should have, was, "Look, I know the trailer I'm renting. I rented it three months ago, and I looked at the data plate on it, and it's three years older than my truck." Instead, I simply left, and haven't been back since.

i worked at a dedicated uhaul store for over a year. iv NEVER required a mechanic letter. 2023 or 1983, idgaf. Also its crazy to hear some stores still using paperwork. every uhaul store i interacted with including my own is on a pc database. all i gotta do is plug your truck into the database and it tells me if you can pull it

Literally had this experience but in the inverse. Full service Uhaul didn’t have any trailers I could take one way even though there were a bunch on the lot. Had to go half an hour down the road to a storage place that had like 2 trailers and a truck. Lady at the storage place was a lot nicer and more helpful than Uhaul though 😅

its because uhaul has 1 way and rotational rentals. Rotational rentals have to return to the store because they are essentially owned by that store. Owned as in, they show up on uhaul database as belonging to that store. Stores make more money off a rotational rental. So example: if i quote you $1000 for a return trip. meaning you bring it back to me, if i give you a rotational truck at $1000, my store makes more money than if i give you a non rotational truck at $1000

Had to move from Mississippi to Tennessee found a uhaul trailer at a mechanics shop all the uhaul trucks and trailers were in a open lot they said people constantly take the batteries and tires off they're trucks and trailers my enclosed trailer you couldn't see it cause the grass had grown so high around it made it all the way to Tennessee to a real uhaul place and they said this thing shouldn't even be on the road anymore with the shape its in asked for some kind of refund for hauling this death trap and they said no were just going to take it out of circulation

Yup. Lots of places put a couple of U-Haul trailers in their parking lot and they rent them. Online usually does a pretty good job of telling you what to not available at certain sites. I look at whatever pictures they got of the place online and I called them to see what they have before I reserve something. Online will let you reserve something that doesn't exist sometimes. It's still not uncommon to get there and find they don't have something even if they have the trailer. They might not have the dolly they might not have pads, etc. I was moving my daughter one time from the town her colleges in and I showed up there, at the U-Haul rental place where I had a reservation. And they were closed. The gate was locked. They were supposed to be open but they just werent. This was 11 a.m. on a Saturday, they took the reservation but they weren't open. Fortunately I got online and found another place about 10 miles away and was able to get one. They were able to cancel my previous reservation in the system and create a new one. It was a crappy looking place.... it was a used tire dealer/ sketchy repair shop. It was run-down and look like it belong in the hood. But the people there were extremely nice and got me fixed up. Except they didn't have the dolly.

I hate these damn small stores that have some sort of affiliation with uhaul. I was moving states in 2013, had setup everything WEEKS in advance so there wouldnt be any issues, go to pick the moving truck up on the day I scheduled, get there and theyre like, well, we dont have the truck yet, Im going get it this afternoon....Im sorry, what?! Dude literally told me he had to drive 4 hours to get the truck I had scheduled WEEKS ago, that I wouldnt be able to pick it up until tmorrow....I start losing my shit, but theres nothing I can do because every other rental place is out of stock. So i come back the next day, dude STIIL didnt have the damn truck. I go back to my apartment and sit for half a day, when dude calls me to let me know theyve got the truck now. I get there and they actually arent back yet, theyre still about 30 mins out.....I sit around waiting, dude finally shows up, have to wait for them to dig out a car carrier from the woods, then dude gets pissed because I didnt leave a tip...I literally asked him if he was out of his f*** mind?!?! His excuse for a tip was because they had to make an 8 hour road trip to get the truck and this and that. DUDE, THATS YOUR JOB!!! WTF. I called the corporate number and spoke with someone, they cut my bill in half considering I was now 2 days behind schedule because their jackass affiliate is dumb as hell.

I’ve wired a few U-Hauls here in NC, while they was open for operation….. and I’ll tell ya what, I’d hear these same ol BS stories daily. Each customer would have different prices for the same 💩…… it never made any damn sense. And the so called managers that ran these places had less common sense that the fry cook at Mc Donald’s.
