Steven Zapata is known for his amazing illustrations and skillful shading techniques. In this lesson he gives you an exercise for improving your ability to invent shaded forms! You’ll watch him assemble abstract flesh-like clusters to demonstrate how to make design decisions for rendering light and dark that you can apply to any form you can imagine. If you’re interested in taking Steven’s full course on the secrets of shading go to proko.com/stevensketches

This is exactly what I needed. I just couldn't understand the basic concept of getting shading started. I used shading in life drawing, but was too afraid to put deep shadows just putting in enough to show it exists.

I do well with objects in front of me... not afraid of using darkest colors to render in my pastel paintings, but trying to get my very active imagination placed down onto paper has been frustrating. This is precisely the sketch challenge I have been planning, but now do not need to reinvent the wheel, but can take it far and fast with his help! Thank you very much!

I mostly work from my imagination, yes we see a human form(usually taken from my own body, sadly, I am very petite/tiny, I always wanted to be shapely)which in my case I always exaggerate when I draw/paint. I am sure the muscles illustrated on super hero's was done with the same thoughts in mind. WINK WINK. I do often question my shadows and this video (even though I've been drawing and painting over 40 years) Is very helpful and makes you thoughtfully think about that shadow placement! Thank you so much.
