Probably the best zentangle video out there. Everyone talks about the importance of shading but no one explains how to shade an imaginsry object. Thank you!

Thank you for this shading video. It’s great. How do you keep your blending stump so sharp?
@botangle4946 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. First, I try to just rotate the stump once in a while when blending. Don't press hard with it. And you can try to file it with a special little sandpaper paddle you get at the art store. It's not the greatest. But these tortillions are so cheap that I just keep a big supply on hand.

Annie Thank you for your suggestions in shading, very helpful. Your creation is Beautiful and the shading brought it to life. Also, how do we make our tortions sharper as you mentioned? I have subscribed & given you a thumbs up. Be Well & Happy

Hi Gail. Thanks for the kind words. Glad you find these shading tips helpful. You can use a small sandpaper paddle (available in art stores by the pencils) or very fine sandpaper to sharpen your tortillion. Just roll it on the sandpaper paddle at an angle to get the point back. Unfortunately, they don't hold up very long. But good thing they are pretty inexpensive for the incredible work they do! Good luck trying that.

What kind of sketchbook are you using? Is there a brand or a kind of paper I would look for. Mainly I would just just Micron pens. Thanks.

This is a book I bound years ago and was using a mixed media paper, I believe. I also recommend 140-lb hot press watercolor paper or Bristol Vellum. All work great.

Thank you for this video. I know shading is important but many times I don’t know quite where to do the shading. I do realize that equal time needs to be devoted to shading. So thank you. You talked about having a good sharp pencil. Is there a sharpener that you would recommend? Thanks.

If you don't know where to put the shading, just try it out. You can always erase it. I have so many different pencil sharpeners, but my favorite at the time is an electric AFMAT. it's actually not powered by a regular cord, but by an HDMI cable that charges like a phone. Also, the Rapesco 64 hand cranked sharpener is the one the Denver Botanic Gardens recommends in the illustrator program. And all pencil companies make pretty sharp little portable sharpeners. I like the one from Faber Castell.
