I think the other main problem is the belt itself. It becomes lose way too fast moving the hook all over your back thereby making attaching the axe onto the hook and have the axe stay there securely way more difficult then it should be. Love your stuff these are just amazing videos
@Quandry1
@Quandry1 6 жыл бұрын
Realistically it would probably work best if the two belts were secured together which I think he mentioned in one of the video's. For somebody doing it full time I think the belt and baldric being made into one harness piece would probably be the most suitable possibility to keep that from happening.
@lukediehl1210
@lukediehl1210 6 жыл бұрын
I have to say, I'm impressed. I think the next step in this evolution would mean delving into some leather crafting. Turn the simple belt into a more elaborate harness. A strap across the chest and over the left shoulder might help with sagging under weight, and like you said, being able to link the shoulder belt and waist belt would stop it from slipping.
@Velken_Iakov
@Velken_Iakov 6 жыл бұрын
I was about to comment, a 3-way belt (and more tightened) would be better to holding, not to mention Kratos has the shoulder-pads, which give a bigger surface area for the axe to weight it down and don't feel as heavy. OR instead of a 3-way, have the belt go under your armpits (like Kratos does in his default armor), it even has some fur to not make the leather hurt the skin too much and damper a bit the stress. ALSO for me it looks like Kratos uses the same principle as the hand of lego hands, since the holder is made of metal, it can flex on stress and allow the axe to be pulled (after all, Kratos IS strong) and it kinda looks like he puts it back by inserting the thinner part first AND it looks like, at least to me, that the is manly hold in place by friction and stress of the "horse shoe" being in an angle, but that could be more to a game design option so you can see the runes you apply to the axe while walking in the world
@Riceball01
@Riceball01 6 жыл бұрын
I think that a Sam Browne design for the belt might work well enough, or at least better. Instead of looping the cross belt under the waist belt you would attach it be either stitching it to the waist belt or putting a couple of rings on the waist belt and having the cross belt attach to the rings. Another idea is to add another belt to the cross belt that attaches to the other side of the waist belt. It would look sort of like an upside down Y that's slanted.

Dranen Stormwright, it's not a sigil or glyph, it's a letter of the Greek alphabet and a number, specifically the last one (and also in uppercase and the number 800) and can signify the end of something, Like in the biblical statement: I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Honestly the way Kratos hook lays flat means the hook tightens to an angled oval cross section of the shaft with the weight of the axe pulling it down. Once you lift the weight off the ring it would be easy to remove again. Similar to the hooks they sell to hang brooms by the handle in a closet

I think another reason why the wood chopping axes kept on slipping out was that the loop was twisting, not the axe itself. The back blade of Kratos' axe prevented the loop from twisting. Maybe a leather belt around the chest would prevent the shoulder belt from twisting, thus keeping the loop in place and preventing the axe from slipping out. All the same, I'm loving the videos dedicated to properly experimenting with the back carry. So often these are dismissed as just impractical or impossible without trying it out first, happy to see that there is an actually practical method!
@LordUroko88
@LordUroko88 6 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest issue with the real axes is the fact the dont have a secondary point of contact. Kratos' axe has 2 nitches in it to catch the hook, so it needs to me lifted some in order to actually twist.

Now you should do a thing about hanging shields on your back. It's too common a fantasy trope. And I understand why. It can free up a hand for other things. See Link for examples.
@logonontrily4161
@logonontrily4161 6 жыл бұрын
SheosMan117 In case of round shield: Have the belt over your left shoulder. Have 2 hooks on it that only allow the handle to go through then the shield is tilted towards right shoulder. Then reaching for the handle with your left hand you tilt the shield the right way. No way of it falling out unless you are upside-down. More complex shields have the handles placed by the maker and he could probably add something to help to carry it on the back. This design still seems to be among the better ones, apart from the struggle of hooking the shield back.

Very Cool! I have some ideas for improvement: 1. Use something similar to a shoulder strap to keep the axe's position more secure. [the belt moves around too much.] 2. Angle the hook down at 30 degrees. [horizontally - not 30 degrees from your back] 3. Bend the bottom of the hook [including the prongs] up at an angle of 30 degrees. 4. Place a clamping hook [a narrow hook that will hold whatever is put in it by squeezing it] on your belt so that you may slide the axe handle into the hook, thus holding the axe handle in place. Make sure the clamp isn't too tight, otherwise it will be too hard to remove the handle. This should stop the axe from moving around so much.

I'm slightly behind but I think this new design illustrates more what I was thinking when I was looking at Kratos Device of the horse shoe hooked onto his Pauldron was that it was designed more to hold it by the head of the axe rather than the haft of it as it's portrayed in the game. Then again it may be portrayed that way in the game due to graphics or something rather than thought about how it's being held. The Axe on Kratos probably should have realistically sat just a little bit lower in the hangar.

You over complicated it just a little bit... You actually do need a shape and angle like the one in the game. Look at the shape of the Axe handle. It's wider near the head of the Axe, then it is further down the handle. Because of this, the opening of the hook only needs to be a slight bit smaller then the widest part of the handle. Also having it at and upward, or even a strait out angle is a disadvantage because it's failing to lock in place. Yes that sounds crazy, but it's true. If you were to have the hook at a downward angle like Kratos has, then the weight combined with the angle and the shape of the hook would cause the Axe to lock into place. I used to have a necklace that locked the same way. The *C* shaped hooks on it were flush with the back of my neck, but because of the weight of the pendant it never came undone unless I touched it. So the design that Kratos has in game, should be very efficient (especially because it is angled slightly away from his body, so it would be easier to catch when placing the Axe). Simply lower the Axe into place and it should be locked in no problem. And more easily removed with out having to rotate it in odd angles. Edit: Also Kratos Axe has a cylindrical handle, unlike the flat handle of the Axe that you've created. This means with the current hook design your Axe is more likely to be knocked out of place by a simple turn. Um... Sorry, I tend to babble at times.
@ShadowsOfEssence
@ShadowsOfEssence 5 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't a cylinder as a handle mean you can't index it by feel?
@angelmuggleangel5042
@angelmuggleangel5042 5 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowsOfEssence Do you mean lock it in place by feel!?! If that's what you mean, then I don't think so. The cylindrical handle shouldn't be a hindrance. Also if it's a proper fit, you should only have to lift very slightly out to remove it from the hook. However, it would definitely take trial and error to figure it out. But that's how you learn everything, trial and error... The hook it's being placed into is a tight *C* shape, therefor the handle should be round as well in order for it to lock in place. It's kind of like the old saying, "Trying to fit a square peg into a round hole." The axe created is; flat, kind of oval in shape and much-much smaller then the widest part of the hook. That's why it's knocked lose so easily, it just rotates with movement and is knocked loose... The inside of the hook should be pretty close to the same size and shape as the widest part of the axe, near the head. The opening of the hook should be just a bit smaller then the same place on the handle. The weight of the axe and the fit and shape of the hook, would lock it into the proper place. When walking and moving around normally, it should stay in place no problem. The only time I could think of it coming lose, would be if Kratos had to crouch or crawl, but that's because that would be altering the angle drastically. If crawling the hook would be standing upward and if Kratos made a sudden movement in that position, then the axe might come loose.
@ShadowsOfEssence
@ShadowsOfEssence 5 жыл бұрын
@@angelmuggleangel5042 actually I meant index the weapon when fighting. If the part you hold a weapon by is perfectly round you have no idea where the cutting edge is unless you look. Look at any axe handle in the store, they do not have perfect cylinders for the shaft. They are move like ovals or rounded rectangles. The flat part fits right in the crook of you closed hand. Most have additional curves to fit right against your thumb. That way there is only one comfortable way to hold it. You always know where the axe blade is without looking.
@angelmuggleangel5042
@angelmuggleangel5042 5 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowsOfEssence Actually, you're right and that does match Kratos' axe. His axe does match your description, meaning the handle is a sort of flat and slightly rounded shape... all but the section near the head. The top (maybe 1/4) of the handle is cylindrical and honestly that's really the perfect amount for what I described. The only part of the handle that would need to be circular, would be at the highest point, in order for it to fit properly and lock into place in the hook. Kratos axe also has a nice curve to it as well as a leather wrapped area to grip. These additions would make it easier for him to tell which way the sharp side of the head is facing while in battle. *;-)*

I can really start to babble sometimes too. It doesn't happen all that often, but it does happen. I contemplated giving you an example in this very reply to your comment. But I first thought: "Wait, I should actually read the bulk of the comment first." After doing that I realized, "Wait, I might actually be able to contribute to this conversation!" Then I started writing this and got so caught up in my babbling that I forgot what your comment was about (sorry). So after rereading it I decided that, yes you do possess a good point in your argument there, but the beard of the axe is much to far away from the haft of the axe for that to work. You'd need the axe to be pinned to one of the branches of the horseshoe. To get this to work, you'd need to lengthen that limb. Which may or may not work. I haven't tried obviously, I'm busy with college. If anyone could delve into that a bit more it would definitely be a nice touch to the conversation. Or you could on the other hand, make the beard closer to the handle. PPPPFFFFFFFTTTTHAAAHAAAAHHHHHAAH!!!!! Sorry. That thought is funny. That could never work. Shad has said that people in history tried to make the axes as heavy as possible without sacrificing it's ability to be wielded properly. And by taking away that part of the axe you would be taking away a significant amount of weight. Not to mention the fact that with the beard closer to the haft you wouldn't be able to drop the axe higher as axe wielders would do when someone got to close. It's completely impractical. See? I can babble too! Also: BACK SCABBARD!!!!!

A second note about the other problem you were having with the axe hook/holster/sheath or whatever, the sliding problem is solved with it being attached to the shoulder armour. And the thing with the holstering method, the piece that holds the axe is slightly flexible and he uses the momentum from swinging the axe from attacking position to sheath. Then there is also the fact that it’s made out of some kind of metal. Like I said the last time, I love the videos. Keep up the good work.

Shadi you've improved the design alot . but everytime you are forgetting a bunch of parameters of the original design. For example try to actually mount the hook (omega sign) on a shoulder guard rather than straps because no matter how tight you do the staps it is still not as stable as the guard. Second , as you mentiond in the video try to give it downwards slope rather than upwards or straight. Third, the hook shouldn't move or dangle in its place it should only flex a little. (Ps: experimentally try to sheathe the axe with your opposite hand and see if that works.)and overall stick to the original design much as you can. Trust me you never know until you give it a shot.

Constructive Criticism: Modern utility axes from a Home Depot, Lowes or something similar need a different hook design due to the difference in the axe head. Also, the hook on Kratos is attached to his shoulder pad which is FAR MORE secure than your belt as your hook slides up and down your back, so you really need to find a way to secure the hook to where it remains in the same spot on your back. Not easy I know, but yeah

Awesome job on that. I'm making my own this week. The size difference is not the biggest issue with a secure fit, its the fact that the woodcutter axe head doesn't prevent rotation in the hook.

2:16 It's called a frog. Which is any kind of open sheath (A sheath that holds an implement but does not protect it from the element). This would be a ring frog sheath more specifically. Which do exist. But they are normally made for waste belts and are normally fully closed rings. 6:36 Something I noticed about Kratos' setup is that he has a basket weave pauldron. That might actually give it a lot more purchase (the way his baldric bobs through it) that could keep it from slipping. His baldric also comes alot higher on the low point (right under the armpit). Which may as well have something to do with it. 13:58 It's not just because of the head that makes it a work axe. It's also the contouring of the shaft. Almost all combat-centric axes have mostly strait, cylindrical, hexagonal, or lenticular shafts. And ones that have rectangular or square shafts also tend to have langets that protect them. This is because they need to be able to absorb and dissipate shock from any direction equally well (given that they may catch or deflect a blow). A Work axe on the other hand tends to have a heavier and thicker head. So the handles need to be more robust. Also because they should (ideally) only receive shock along a single axis on either side (such as when chopping or using the other side to drive a wedge) they are heavily contoured to absorb and dissipate shock only along that axis. Kratos' axe is a little weird. It's mostly designed like a work axe and is very similar to a gooswing axe in size and shape. But it has that smaller axe head on the back. If purely a work axe you'd want a flat (hammer type head) there. or have that smaller blade turned the other way to act as an adze.

I think better securing the hook to yourself so that the belt itself doesn't twist would help quite a bit more to keeping the real axes from twisting themselves out. But otherwise, nice to see it works so well in general. It's fun to know the concept is fairly sound, and only needs a few details worked out.

Shad, the reason Kratos' hook has a slightly larger opening is because it makes it *slightly* easier to get out and put away - and Kratos can summon the axe, so if it falls out he doesn't even have to bend down to retrieve it. Also, making the hook out of steel seems like a must for your final product. Good catch on the back hook!

You're still missing a key component of the hangar that Kratos uses. The one on his back has the ability to fold down so once the axe is in place on his back and it is pulled down it creates a better latch and possibly less ability for the axe to rotate. Good work with the testing on this platform! Keep it up Shad.

Its interesting that it works as well as it does. I had a feeling with the weight of a real axe the ring would need to be a lot more secure. But as it stands it seems perfect for Cosplayers since its seems really easy to carry, and put away the axe. - Not to mention you can actually to the Kratos draw.

I meant as in the way the ring is mounted onto you the person. Because as we can see the belt tended to slide down the back with just the weight of a prop axe. So an adjustment to how this ring is mounted to a person would be needed for heavier objects.

DeScruff With the prop axe the problem would be easily solved by attaching the cross belt to the waist belt instead of just being held down by the waist belt. If he either stitched the cross belt to the waist belt or attach it to a couple of rings attached to the top of the waist belt that should be enough to support the weight of a prop axe.

you could also probably put a groove across the top of the holder that the blade of the axe fits into. That could help to stop the axe from rotating

I think a similar design can be used to make swords carried on the back more practical. We are very familiar with the problems of carrying an actual sheathed sword on your back, but provided the sword has the proper cross-guard; wherein it protrudes out in a hollow square, hexagonal, or diamond shape like Shad's wooden great sword. If two--to-four small upward protrusions were added to the back-weapon-carrier; then one could slip in the blade much the same way you do with the axe, lower the hollow points of the cross-guard through the protrusions, and theoretically your blade is now on your back with the protrusions locking it in place, preventing the sword from simply slipping out. Then when its time for action, you need only lift your sword 2-3 inches upwards and swing it around. Thus allowing people to carry sworda of much greater length on their back (just give them space when its time to "un-sheath").

I think alot of the design is specifically the way it's for a reason. The downward hang of the ring when hooked would hold the head flat against your back and gravity would keep the ring hanging straight down and perpendicular to the orientation of the axe head. The ring, since it is so light, could probably be raised by a small amount of tension by how it's threaded in or by a cottin pad or other compressible material being under the ring. This would even have the added locking effect of the weight of the axe pulling the ring down and having it dig in and bind up with the wood of the handle. The straight out flanges would work far better in this arrangement because the hooks of the axe would sit on them straight, where as your design would have them sloped down away from the hooks. I think your holstering method would work perfect if you you could get the ring to sit out away form the body when not being pulled down by the axe. I'm sure there is a lacing method that would provide the required tension, or something you could place behind it that wouldn't be to advanced for the time period.

I think the reason Kratos's axe is so stable is because the holster is connected to a hide that is secured tight around his torso, also his axe fits in the Omega symbol because it's thick enough to be snug in a very big hand. Also I enjoyed this video very much, keep doing what your doing 👍
@TheAnon26
@TheAnon26 6 жыл бұрын
The small axe isnt slipping out because of its smaller haft, its slipping out because theres nothing to stop it from twisting. Kratos' axe has that smaller blade on the back, which is large enough to stop it twisting that way (the actual blade stops it from twisting the other way). The woodscopping axe only has one blade, and its not a bearded axe, so the angle of where the axe head meets the haft further induces twisting (thats not even considering weight issues). With nothing on the reverse side to stop it from twisting, it turns and falls out. So, this kind of design requires some kind of protrusion on the back of the axe to work. Which is totally fine, adding a small spike can even be quite useful against armoured opponents, after all. But it wouldnt work for a simple, one-bladed axe.
@Woxlayks
@Woxlayks 6 жыл бұрын
No, it has nothing to do with twisting the axe. It all has to do with the fact that the circumference of the wood near the axe head is larger than the circumference of the handle where you hold the axe - and the ring is small enough to not let the bigger part of the handle through, but the opening in the ring is large enough to let the thinner part of the handle through. Imagine a big cone and a small loop. If you try to get the cone through the loop, it will go through a certain distance, but it is impossible to get it through completely. So the only way to unsheath the Leviathan axe is if you lift it slightly up while it's in the loop, and then you can pull it out of the ring because the opening in the ring lets the bottom-part of the handle through. Again, it has nothing to do with a twist motion. I have drawn an image that will hopefully make it clear what I'm talking about: i.imgur.com/IqeFIQ7.jpg
@TheAnon26
@TheAnon26 6 жыл бұрын
That would be the case if the handle had a round diameter, but thats not the case - its more of an oval, an ellipse, or possibly a rounded rectangle. The thickness is different in two dimensions. Imagine the cone being flattened. Sure, you can still lift it up and out, but if you dont do that (that is, if the axe is not lifted), then the only way to fall out is by twisting. The Leviathan axe does not twist because it has two blades that hit the back - twist too far, and it is stopped. The woodcutting axe only has one blade, so while it cant twist one way, it *can* twist the other way - which leads to the axe dropping out. Heres what I meant (I apologise for the hasty scribbles and stuff, but its 3am and I was just about to go to sleep. :P): imgur.com/Xxynz85
@Woxlayks
@Woxlayks 6 жыл бұрын
That's completely irrelevant. It doesn't have to be a perfectly round diameter, I just depicted it that way for ease of understanding. The only thing that matters is that the thinner side (if the handle is not perfectly round) of the upper part of the handle is wider than the ring opening. That way you need to lift it until the ring opening reaches the thinner part of the handle and you can slip it through. Again, no twisting is necessary here, although you can design it in a way that you need to twist it on top of lifting it - although that's not practical in case of a two-sided axe. The design in this video is completely flawed - that's why the axe falls out if it happens to slightly twist and that's why it wasn't easy to unsheath.
@TheAnon26
@TheAnon26 6 жыл бұрын
Oooooh, now I get it... I was really just trying to explain why the real axes dropped off. And having the twisting thing in there does seem to make it a bit quicker to draw - otherwise youd either have to a) reach across your shoulder and lift it up and over, and readjust your grip or b) try to lift it behind your back, which is awkward or even impossible, depending on how far youd have to lift it. So this design *does* seem to be the best option, *IF* the axe has a protrusion on both sides - be it another blade, a spike or what-have-you. For a one-bladed axe I agree, the design is totally unusable.
@Woxlayks
@Woxlayks 6 жыл бұрын
You can completely customize how far up you need to lift the axe to be able to unsheath it. It's very easy to lift it about 5-10 cm from what I've been trying. Of course the longer the handle, the further up you will be able to lift it and the more secure it will be. Which might incidentally also explain the unusually long handle for this 1-handed axe. You can even assist the lift of the axe by thrusting your upper body upwards, leaving very little work for your arms.
