When I originally watched the build video it made me imagine a scenario in which a Japanese sword smith got his hands on say, a European or middle eastern sword and thought, 「まあ、これオモロいやつやなぁ。なんとか作ってみようかなぁ。」 It’s hardly unprecedented. I recently learned of Ming dynasty Chinese sailors witnessing the combat effectiveness of ootou and uchigatana in the hands of Japanese pirates and basically imitated the design. There were notable design differences, but they remained popular in China well into the early 20th century, so pretty good weapons.
@Scuzzlebutt142 Жыл бұрын
@@stgibbs86 So what? This thing they created has a standard cross guard and pommel, just like the construction of a Swiss Saber. And using an imported blade is a very european thing, as they imported blades from all over and put them in their own furniture, didn't make them not an example of the sword just cause the blade was imported. If I came across this thing in the wild, and didn't have the backstory, I would classify it as a Swiss saber by its form. What components you used to form it really don't matter. The same way if you fit a Messer blade onto a haft, my first thought would be Naginata, not trying to make up a term for it.

as a physics student, E=.5mv^2. You have slightly more mass in motion, and the mass that's there is moving faster, therefore you will apply more energy in the strike, increasing the force applied and the cutting capacity. The weight distribution thing works because, by putting the mass further from the point of rotation, you increase the moment arm and the speed of that mass, allowing it to store more energy in it's motion, but adding the counterbalance doesn't decrease the moment arm of the existing mass, it only adds more mass.

@SterlingArmory Жыл бұрын
I wish we could work with you guys on these! Would be a lot of fun and Chris has actually done this exercise before. Just to add, heavier overall swords do not necessarily hit harder, it really does depend on distribution of that mass and how it's used (ie balance point, and how it's swung). An easy way to see this is a variety of feders and sparring swords. If the POB is pulled way back to the guard compared to farther out POBs, they tend to hit a lot lighter, no matter the overall weight. OH! and if you want to do a larger O katana with a euro grip, I think a 1060 blade would be much better than a 1040 blade. Only because those makers tend to really nail the heat treat with 1060 more consistently.

Listening to the weight distribution discussion on blades is very similar to weight distribution on cars, you have your pros and cons, but in the end a better balanced item is always be easier to handle, in the end is all determined by the limitations of the platform or the usage of said item.
@nixodian108 Жыл бұрын
I may be completely wrong but here is my take: When you cut something it means you have surpassed its maximum strain resistance. Strain, like pressure, is the force-to-area ratio and force is mass multiplied with acceleration. In order to increase the acceleration you would need a bigger lever. Now in a two-handed sword the lever has more to do with your two hands and less to do with the center of mass. As a result the change of center of mass is way less impactful than the change in mass.

The Tyranthian Scimtana needs a longer blade, a slightly longer grip, and a fishtail pommel. The Katana's weakness is always reach, and since you are adding weight in pommel you can balance that against length, and the fishtail gives you the most capacity to choke down the grip to stretch out the reach further. You would be getting the benefits of a Miao Dao without having the overlong grip due to the pommel weight - getting it more into the longsword family. There is a reason why short swords are so often stabbers - because stabbing loses no energy with shorter length (just reach). Slashing does lose energy the shorter the blade.

Weight distribution and overall weight itself are similar to that of a bastard sword, while also having similar beastly cutting and chopping capacities; referencing to the tree chopping video where the bastard sword and katana both had nearly equal results. Bastana also just sounds really fricken cool.

In the Honor Harrington series, there's a blade that's essentially this - crossguard + katana blade. It does have a straight third before the typical katana blade, but what you produced sounds close to it.

@@sandpirate1662 Not 100% certain as all that many other swords were discussed but the real Heron Mark swords were mass produced during the War of Power though so I'd assume so. Also his, his fathers, sword was unusual, finer, more ornamented with Herons than most, Lan's blade were a lot more plain with only a heronengravig on the blade itself (if i remember right). I think it was Lan who hypothesized that Rand's sword had belonged to an officer during the WoP.

If you lower the point of balance toward the hilt then you are adding mass to the working side of the lever and mass x speed = force. So it should have more force with the new hilt assuming that speed is constant.

This reminds me of a Fantasy character I made on a "story" I was writing. A kind of Fighter/Ranger (if I compare to D&D), dual blade warrior, using a Katana on main hand and a wide double edge european/medieval sword hold backwards mainly to parry. I remember everyone would get triggered by such abomination as it would make both groups angry. Now this "Simitana" would be the kind of sword he would end up using, he would still o with dual sword fight. I specially like that the handle gives the ilusion that the blade looks shorter, that can be an interesting thing to add in the story. how an enemy underestimate him and thinks it has the advantage cos the simitana looks shorter or doesn't have enough reach

I am SO not a fan of the crossguard in general on ANY sword. I can definitely see the potential for that catching on clothing or striking near the wrist of the wielder when you make contact. A tsuba or even a rapier basket doesn't stick out as far, and being more rounded means it's far less likely to get caught on clothing when being drawn or coming in close contact with the wielder's body, not to mention that it makes for an area to catch/deflect an opposing blade from ALL angles. Your standard crossguard is only really going to be effective in stopping an opposing blade from sliding down on the front or back, from anywhere else on the sides of it it's gonna offer absolutely no practical protection whatsoever. Granted, an opposing edge vs. the flat of a blade is not going to be ideal in terms of a full power strike because it runs the very real risk of warping/bending the receiving blade on the flat side, however in a drawn out fight you're not going to have that many full power strikes that will be delivered in the first place. Besides, your goal in blocking a strike shouldn't be straight on, edge-to-edge contact anyways. You should be looking to redirect the force of the blow by letting it slide down the length of the blade until it runs into the guard, thus stopping it's forward momentum. At that point you can push back against it or pull the whole sword out of the way, to throw the attacker off balance, OR pinning the blade by it's flat against another surface in order to attack it where it's thinner and thus easier to break. So in terms of hand protection, I absolutely disagree with their assessment here as they make no mention whatsoever with attacking the crossguard itself in order to have it strike the radial nerve bunch just below the wrist, which could cause an involuntarily reflexive action to drop the blade completely. In terms of cutting power and speed, yeah mass x acceleration = force, BUT when swung it's not going to be a fixed point lever at the balance point. The fulcrum is going to be in a constant state of motion up & down the length of the blade and the forearm because in order to get enough range and momentum to be effective, it's better to think of it in terms of a whip with the shoulders, the elbow, the wrists, AND the balance point all acting as fulcrums temporarily at some point throughout the swing's total motion. The weakest and most flexible fulcrum along that motion though would be at the wrists which is why so many people look at the balance of the blade as being so important. Typically the better the balance of the blade itself, the more quickly and easily you can redirect the momentum in order to change your angle of attack.

It's true that "katana" just literally means "sword" but even in Japanese lexicon it's become fairly common to refer to the same style of sword as what the West calls a "katana." The Japanese have tended to adopt "剣" (tsurugi/ken) as the general word for "sword" and "刀" (katana) more often for Japanese-style swords and are more than willing to let it just be shorthand for "uchigatana" (the standard two-hander).
@swordweaver9696 Жыл бұрын
tsurugi剣 are generally referring to straight swords, katana刀 generally are curved swords, just like those characters use in Chinese
@FalconWindblader Жыл бұрын
@@swordweaver9696 It ain't actually about curvature, as there are indeed 刀 that are straight. the distinction is made to differentiate if the sword in question is single or double-edged, & 刀, be it in Chinese or Japanese, refers exclusively to single-edged blades.
@FalconWindblader Жыл бұрын
Untrue. the word used to mean 'sword' in general is 剣, SPECIFICALLY when it's read as 'ken'. when read as 'tsurugi', it refers specifically to double-edged, straight swords. 'katana' on the other hand, refers to single-edged, most probably curved swords. the origin & the process are mostly irrelevant when it comes to defining what's a katana in the broadest sense of the term.

I think the problem wit the Simetana's handle is not the lenght but that this pommel is an awkward fit to this type of handle profile. Perhaps it would perserve a more Katana esque look if you made it more like the pommel of a Chinese dao. With some customization you could even wrap it like it used to be. Though that would be a ton of work.
@llywyllngryffyn8053 Жыл бұрын
The longer distance from the tip to the center of mass means that it will be slightly faster on impact. combine that with the additional weight and it means that it should have more angular momentum. It should also give you more point control. It becomes more of a slashing weapon than a chopping blde, though, because the extra mass is now in the handle. On another side note, by adding that heavy pommel, you add in the possibility of a pommel strike to a weapon that never really had one before. Options are good.
@glenmcgillivray4707 Жыл бұрын
Folks be complaining about lowering the center of rotation. When it actually means there is more blade above that point actively helping you cut. And the shorter lever arm makes it easier to move. The only weakness is a lowered resistance to binding blades applying more force back to the user, which we helped fix with a competent cross guard. The argument is like saying a longsword is worse than a broadsword because the blade is longer!

This "abomination" is for me very nice, it does make the katana look better and more efficient, I would use this any days instead of a Katana. Repeat this process with a nōdachi and see if Tyranth doesn't change his mind. Because the tip heavy balance is practically doubled on the nōdachi and giving it the balance of a longsword with the reach of a greatsword might make it completely broken. Maneuverable af, with the weight, stiffness, and momentum to knock a man off a horse with a smack with the flat of the blade.
@Concrete21 Жыл бұрын
Unless I'm completely misunderstanding: The center of balance of a blade just afects the maneuverability. If we assume that you are trying to swing a sword and have it rotate around the center, then the mass on one end is equal to the mass on the other. So in general the heavier the blade, the more force you have to put into rotating it up to a fast speed, the stonger the stike. With a katana you are not trying to rotate around the center of balance, instead you are rotating below it. So the mass you are trying to lift is lighter, and therefore you can get it up to speed easier, and with less force. F=Ma. So if mass is the same, then the katana is more forceful due to being able to get faster speeds easier. The more european style sword that is meant to rotate around the center of balance will habe less force, but less force is less commital, and therefore you get more maneuverablity. TLDR Summary: Katana more force more commital. European less force more maneuverable.
