So a big and common misconception with the “flick” is that the purpose is to remove the blood from the blade, but the actual reason as to why they do it is to check the bamboo pin that connects the blades tang to the handle. Traditional Katanas used bamboo and sometimes metal pins to hold the weapon together, however the metal pin wasn’t used as often due to it shattering the tang inside the handle due to the tension. Bamboo pins were used the most due to how flexible they were and the shock absorption so the tang doesn’t shatter, the downside is the pin would wear down fast so after every fight they would do the “flick” to check if the blade feels loose or if it shakes even a little bit so they know to change the pin. So first they would do the “flick” to check the pin, then wipe the blade of the blood. Sheathing, it is easier to use the other hand as a guide to help sheathe the blade, but another major upside to sheathing it the “traditional” way is since you’re using the other hand to guide you can keep your eyes on the battle field and stay alert. Now I’m not here to say “OoOoh kAtAnaS aRe tHe bEsT” it’s statistically not true due to the small guard and single edge, but there are few things that I see in some of the videos I’ve seen you guys do get wrong and I don’t blame ya and totally understandable since you guys specialize in European weapons, and personally I love Chinese weapons. Anyways, that’s enough yapping from me, love you guys and if you read this far thank you, I really do hope this channel doesn’t go under ‘cause I always love some good sword content.

I believe the purpose of the "blood flick"/spin was more intended to test the integrity of the fit and finish of the sword after a fight, since during combat the bamboo pins could crack, creating a rattle you could hear when you flicked/spun the sword.

There are theories as to why it is done ranging from spiritual to function to showmanship.

The movement before sheathing has a name meaning "to throw away the blood". In Shinkendo, which is a modernized Japanese martial art that uses a katana, it's not about cleaning the sword as much as it is about preparing to sheath the sword. You do the same thing every single time and have it drilled into you so you don't risk cutting yourself with your sword while sheathing it. "The most dangerous thing we do in Shinkendo is draw and sheathe the sword. If you die, it will be because you screwed up while doing one of those things." That's what I was taught.

Mary, Queen of Scots, was beheaded with an axe, in what was a demonstration of how hard it can be to chop off a head. The first blow hit her in the back of the head; the second hit the neck, but the head remained attached by a strip of flesh; the executioner then sliced (some sources say "sawed", indicating that it looked clumsy) the head off with the axe blade, and lifted it high. Anne Boleyn, however, was executed with a sword, by an expert brought in from France, who did the job with a single stroke.

I think it isn't the sweep of the sword that helps rid the blade of blood, it is how quickly you stop the blade once it is in motion. Imagine a flick of the wrist that threatens to hurt said wrist as you stop it. Think of it like cracking a whip. It is the change of direction that causes the tip to break the sound barrier. Also the polish of the blade would be as mirror like as possible and would help a bit too.

I feel like your only hope to get blood off your blade without a simple wipe is going to have to be far more centripetal than a simple flick. I imagine if you make a large enough arc motion you could manage to pull the blood into a larger drop allowing SOME of it to come off. Getting all of it off though... that is going to be absurdly hard to the point where surely wiping it is easier.

In terms of sheathing, I doubt people would want to eye ball the sheath in a battle field so they would like to keep the eye on the surrounding while placing the blade back in. There is an old saying, you are in the setting until you are safely back home, basically meaning you do not want to drop guard until you are back into the safe spot. Eyeballing the blade back into the sheath in a potential battle zone does not fit into that persepective.

@Shad. A katana is not a hacking weapon, it is not an arming sword. It is a _slicing_ weapon, you drive it with your body motion (ashi (foot movement) has heavy emphasis in Katana bujutsu) For Tyranth, try pulling the whole saya forward as you break the seal with the thumb (as usual careful not to push the thumb on the blade or bring the blade up to the hand), and drive the left leg back and drive the saya backwards, as a counter-balance to the draw with the right hand - the draw is shorter and the right hand is focusing on rotating the blade and slicing motion, driving against the stiffness of the shoulders yanking the saya back. Generally the right hand is coming up to the forward position as the saya is moving forward, the right also guarding against the enemy grabbing the blade. The whole motion when timed right doesn't get the tsuka much further forward, but positions for a much faster and stronger cut. It also brings into being a much cleaner slice. The full draw shown in this video is slower, and tends to result in a more Northern European "hacking" motion, which can lead to blade damage. The damage from compression effect on the fine edge of the blade, when a slicing motion runs along the edge of the blade opening rather than cleaving the leading edge. Likewise, remember you're trained to be moving and walking as part of the flowing motion, not standing and striking rigidly - consider it like the follow-through of a golf shot; sure the ball has left by then but part of the body energy has to go in certain directions to get the proper slicing motion. Cheers. Love the show. - And yes, even though I'm subscribed this only showed up on the fourth KZbin window I opened this evening, and on the second screen of the recommended videos on the right of the screen - further down than some 5 month old videos and after a bunch of channels I'm not subscribed too :( Perhaps an email list for when a new episode goes up?

I thought being able to decapitate a person head off with a single swing also to me seemed impossible, since the blade would struggle with bone. I noticed those minor details themselve, I do like later in Shogun that the main Lord character mentioned in past, that for him didn't take a single swing to decapitate a head.

In feudal Japan, if you got a woman pregnant and her parents found out, they'd force you to marry, with the imperial army behind you, hand on katana. Good old Shogun weddings...😂

If you hold a rag when you pinch the blade to sheathe it, you clean the blade in that same motion. Maybe that's why the technique exists? Practice swords aren't bloody, so they don't use the rag, but the motion is the same.

Recently in KZbinland, I keep getting recommendations for channels and topics I have absolutely no interest in. My only solution is blocking those channels but YT algorithms seem to really want me to look at video game channels and doesn't care how many game channels I block.

It’s a great test done by the shad team, it shows how guys, who aren’t really familiar with the thematic of Katana and the traditions behind it, trying their best to figure stuff out. Was fun to watch.

Hey Shad, great video. I’ve worked with a lot of stage blood, and while the viscosity of mass produced stage blood is very similar to real blood, all the ones I’ve use are stickier and do not interact with surfaces or cloth quite the same as real blood. That being said, I think the results would be similar enough that your conclusion of “flick doesn’t clean the blade enough to be re-sheathed” is correct.

Not sure if it has been mentioned on other reviews/websites, but it is worth mentioning. Blood and sea water share many chemical similarities. You would not want to keep sea water on your blade, so neither would you want to leave blood on a blade.

I have the knife and sheath my dad carried through the Vietnam War, and he mentioned the event that most likely was the reason for his Bronze Star was an event where his position was overrun at night, and he and 2 other guys held their ground in a foxhole until dawn when reinforcements came. They ran out of ammo, as well as were overrun, forced to use their knives for a stint. Upon examining the sheath, there is indeed blood stains inside it, and on the outside. My dad bought the knife new, and has never gone hunting, nor ever loaned it to anyone for hunting. I have to assume the blood belongs to the Vietnamese men who tried to kill my dad. When I asked him about why he sheathed the knife without cleaning it, he said to me, "There was nothing clean to wipe it with. Do you hear me? Everything was covered in mud or blood. EVERYTHING. I had more pressing things on my mind than cleaning some stupid knife." I stopped asking questions after that, as I could see the memories really bothered him. I mention this due to your pointing out that soldiers tend to do what's practical over what's flashy. There were no cameras in feudal Japan, so who'd he be showing off to? Some horrified peasants? There would have been little reason to do some flashy flick or whatever. I'd wager they probably carried a rag of some sort, like a handkerchief - something small and easy to wash. 100% I think if such an attack like that happened, dude probably would have used his rag and wiped the blade. Easier to clean a rag than your battle dress. Might have even tossed the rag to a servant/squire, and been handed a clean one. Or, he just put it back in and got the hell out of there, as like you were saying, such a kill might not have been entirely legal, and easier to deny you did something if you're nowhere near the event.

Good news, this video was actually put into my autoplay list by KZbin! Right behind a Lego video about Alcatraz, so it had little to nothing to do with what I watched before, but the main aspect here is that KZbin did actually recommend this channel to me for once? Sure I did watch your videos with more emphasis lately due to the struggles and put a like in each one, as well as occasional comments, but most of those were from your shadlands and knights watch channel. Anyways, thought I'd share the fact this is the first time in a LONG while that I had a shadiversity channel video recommended to me. Maybe our continued support SLOWLY turns the algorythm around? Would be nice to see consumer decisions to actually matter.

I always get notified when you upload and I always see your uploads in my feed (from all of the Shad channels I'm subscribed to). I just can't finish watching your videos no more. They're rambling and full of just you guys messing around while less than 10 minutes of a 30 minute video is relevant info. This used to be a history channel, I was listening to your videos while playing video games, ON LOOP so I could learn cool stuff about castles and swords and the life or medieval people, but now it's just testing video game concepts and larping as adventurers. That's why I barely click on your videos anymore, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. The problem isn't KZbin, Shad, it's the fact that your videos are not entertaining enough to capture the young crowd, nor informațional enough to keep your older audience. It's the reason why the Metatron has been killing it lately, I can just listen to his videos while doing my regular housework and still follow the narrative.

If it's sticking to a blade (solid object) the term is "adhesion", and adhesiveness. The flow of the liquid, how it sticks to itself, is viscosity.

My dad was actually taught kendo in the 80’s and his process after a cut was 3 steps, a flick, a bump with his fist on the tsuba and then wiping it across his glove as he brought the blade back to be sheathed. So these results will be rather interesting to me Edit: I wrote this before finishing the video, cool to see all got referenced

Another factor you must also take into consideration is that Samurai started training at a young age. In the scene that inspired you to do this video, the Samurai in question had probably been training for close to 20 years, if not more. Training, practice, and proficiency also need to be factored into you results. Tyranth was correct about drawing/sheathing being quite a bit of muscle memory, as Samurai were trained in not just the motions of sword combat, but that 'art' of it. It was very much a type of ceremony to them, even in the earlier days. One last item, if I may? After a decapitation, there may not even be much blood left on the blade. With any cut, Samurai were trained to 'cut hard, cut fast'. They were/are trained that speed was power (and so it actually is, to an extent). Maybe not so much for the regular soldier, but Samurai were much better and more formally trained. The scene you refer to shows the cut to be not only accurate and relatively powerful (for the type of strike), but that it was done quickly, which may have contributed to very little blood even staying on the blade. However, all that being said, nice video. I'm grateful you are willing to actually test theories.

I’m seeing all the new videos pop up in my recommended videos to watch every time I open up KZbin on my phone. However, when I see the length of the video it doesn’t immediately make me want to watch it (nothing wrong with long format videos personally) when it comes to my viewing habits I tend to go for shorter length videos 8 times out of 10, but on the rare occasions that I have more time to watch something I will go back and watch them at my convenience. I really enjoy watching the videos you have made for this channel and would be saddened if the channel were to go away. Keep up the good work and hope you can find a way to keep this channel going ❤️.
