A shield is not generally considered a weapon, but Captain America uses his shield as one, so does this make any sense at all?

Delgen1951 Magneto has smashed Captain America quite a few times in the comics, so yes, Magneto loves fighting him. As for a rust monster...they have a limited range, and you'd be insane to think Cap is just going to stand there and let the monster eat his shield. Low level adventurers usually trash those things, so I don't see why...what I assume would be a higher level adventurer like Cap...suddenly be cowering in horror of the thing.

In the comics, Cap can bullet time, which really solves the problem of getting hit by bullets. In the movies, Cap has to take more cover in addition to using the shield, which works too, but he's at more risk of getting hit. Note how he takes out terrorists in Civil War. He's not out in the open like he would be in the comics.

@Novenae_CCG
@Novenae_CCG 5 жыл бұрын
I'm just gonna assume that it's the 'bounciness' of whatever it's bouncing off of. Remember, it only absorbs vibrations onto itself, but it can still be moved by outside forces. I mean, if it literally negated all kinetic energy (where kinetic energy is 0.5m*v^2, thus dependent on velocity), it wouldn't be able to be moved at all, and Captain would have as much trouble lifting it as Thor's hammer.

I know they say that vibranium absorbs kinetic force but I think that's an oversimplification even in canon. My working theory is that vibranium works like a mirror but for kinetic energy instead of photons. If a thing hits it head on, the impact force is reflected back into the thing and cancels out its momentum. If it hits at an angle the impact is reflected at an angle and causes the thing to ricochet, but with less speed than it had before because some is canceled out. But like all things this reaction has its limits so if you hit the shield really hard (like when Bucky punches it with his robot arm) some of the force escapes as tiny shockwaves in the form of humming sound. And if you hit it really really hard like with a magic hammer the shockwaves are a lot stronger and can damage nearby stuff And for whatever reason - maybe a crystal structure thing or tempering or maybe there's a bunch of tiny groves - the edges of the shield count as hitting at an angle so when the shield hits something its own momentum is reflected back into itself causing it to bounce. Its not a perfect headcanon but it more or less works with the MCU and the comics I've read.

Interesting, though I do remember that most Military shooting training is "aim for Centre of mass". Also for the shield, they didn't have any more material for it. In the Original Comic, the Shield is the ONLY known alloy between Vibranium and Iron, while in the MCU it is purely Vibranium. Edit: In the Comics, his Shield was later reforged after it was broken, and then had Uru, the same metal as Thor's Hammer.

Chrly Ray, I think he was getting overly simplified. But the tendency being talked about is how very often characters can ignore powers to start fighting H2H where it doesn't make sense; and this also works in where it should be gun-fights. Not just the superheroes either. Case in point: Defense of Wakanda... In an age of a super advanced society with force fields, surrounded by weapon tech of modern man.... They choose to mass charge in h2h to fight the invading army.... Or with spears... Instead of things more effective; like shooting them at range. The civil war sequence is another great example. A shit ton of powers on display, but only when it was cinematically awesome... And you know, devolving into a lot of h2h combat that really should not have been where the battle would realistically be at all.

He talks about the coefficient of restitution (which is a fancy way of saying how elastic something is) where the metals that makes up Captain America’s shield is perfectly mixed into an alloy that absorbs kinetic energy and uses that energy in combination with it’s elastic properties to deflect bullets,ricochets and anything else you can think of all without deforming the metal to the point of no return. That’s just my simplified understanding of that video. Check it out, if you want to.

The problem with this is that you have to consider two factors: the shield's construction and Cap's abilities. The shield is composed of vibranium (though many years ago, think it was the 80s, the shield was supposedly an alloy of vibranium AND adamantium), which is extremely light and very hard to destroy. The second is that Captain America is a super soldier with the physical abilities of an Olympic level athlete (of every sports, so strength of a weightlifter, speed of a sprinter), and skill levels to match. This means he knows exactly how to use the shield to maximum effect in combat. He might want it a little larger, but its hard to increase its size given the scarcity of the proper material. Oh, and as far as his lower body plot armor, I would point out that many people shoot at the upper body first. They are trained to kill or disable enemies, which involves hitting them in the head or chest first or the arms second. Cap is a hard target normally, and if by default you go for the big target, i.e. center mass, then you would wind up hitting his shield. By the time you aim for his legs, he is probably already within striking range.
@MastodonKnightStudios
@MastodonKnightStudios 3 жыл бұрын
Cap's super soldier abilities go beyond that of an Olympic Athlete even. It's noted he can bench press at least 1,100 pounds (specified as a warm-up for Cap) and run at about 60 mph. In comparison Ussain Bolt has been clocked at 26mph, I believe and the world record of bench pressing is 885 pounds. So his shield is definitely being wielded beyond normal human capabilties even.

I wanted to bring up this center of mass point myself. While training on my rifle in the Marines, one of the exercises we learn on the range is a "Failure to stop" drill. Two precise shots to the body then a single shot to the center of the face. It's meant to stop a rushing combatant and it is done on repeat until it becomes muscle memory. Shad brought up aiming for the legs and I agree it's the right tactic to employ, but Cap knows what he's dealing with and has a shield more fitting an acrobatic and adaptable combat style.

To be fair to Cap, aiming for the legs is rather difficult on a moving target, most people when they are taught to shoot are taught to aim center mass because that gives the greater chance of hitting. In the heat of the moment when a super soldier is charging your position, reacting and aiming effectively enough to hit the legs is no easy feat. Not impossible, and someone prepared for Cap should have the sense to at least try, but I can understand why most don't.

Controlling the recoil from a firearm is actually no walk in the park, even on single fire, going fully automatic means bracing against the gun's tendency to rise from the recoil. Combine that with a hot second of reaction time and pants wetting fear as a super soldier sprints towards you can 60 mph (official speed listing of Cap), we're looking at 88 feet or 27 meters per second, you'd have a heck of a time seeing anything to aim for except the shield.

For cap with his superhuman stats shield is perfect because he's still not bullet proof but his shield is. It's size is stylised i think. On the note of style he was created as a defender for America so the shield was an obvious choice. From a martial artist perspective a shield is not a great primary for someone with normal strength. You'll get tired so quick and pain compliance doesn't work on everyone so you want something that causes more trauma for disabling in some way be it lethal or crippling

Fact* Cap was first was shown using a Heater Shield, it was switched to avoid a law suit. Pep comics (later changed to Archies comics) had a character named the Shield that came out a year before Captain America. The Shield's costume was a Heather Shaped chest/shield with stars and stripes and red long sleeve shirt and pants. Said chest armor looked a little to much like Caps shield at first. So to avoid being sued by Pep, Marvel (then Timely Publications) changed it to the now iconic design.

I would say there's a lot of merit to this, apart from the humor. It's a bright, shining object with a clear marker on the center and it's easier to see than the legs of Cap, which probably are moving rather fast. The mind is drawn to that object and unless you are a supervillain level opponent, you're probably not mentally prepared for a Captain America charge and shieldbash, so you don't shoot for the legs but the one bright object you can clearly identify.

I always found it brilliantly wholesome that the face of the most “perfect” superhero in the world’s weapon was a shield. It really goes to show that he’s not here to hurt anybody, he’s here to protect and serve. Also, he doesn’t really need a big shield because he took the serum which gives him insane superhuman reflexes, and he can just hold it in the middle of his body and go up or down easily to protect himself. Also also; If you remember, the shield actually went through several variants before they settled on the superior vibranium version, one of which was a full body shield.

On you mentioning the shield not covering the legs: 1: Shooting the legs is not a reliable way to incapacitate an opponent. First of all, legs are a skinny and fast-moving target, making them hard to hit in the first place. Secondly, in a high-stress situation like a shootout, the sheer adrenaline is actually enough to render a shot to the leg mostly ineffective. I actually have personal experience on this, having been shot before. I didn't even realize it happened until I looked down and saw that my arm was bleeding, and even then I didn't feel any pain until almost half an hour after the fact. Combine this with the fact that Cap is probably a lot tougher than the average person, and you can start to see why shooting him in the leg when he's charging at you probably isn't going to work. 2: Soldiers are specifically trained to not shoot people in the legs. In almost any form of firearms training, you are told to aim for the torso/center of mass. This is because the torso is the biggest target with the highest chance of stopping your target. This is especially true in police and military training. Soldiers are going to instinctively aim for the chest because that's what they're trained to do. In short, Captain America's shield doesn't need to cover his legs. And if the above reasons aren't enough, I'm pretty sure cannonically they ran out of material.

Counter arguments: 1. Germans have buzzsaw and squad firing at once would give even better chance of hitting legs. Fragmentation grenade, doe to its nature, would give a lot of damage if he doesn't decide to cover it or crouch behind the shield. 2. Not to mention that Captain america running is like a freight train at full tilt. I think shooting at him to make him raise his shield and hoping to pin him down or that someone else will shoot him in the side or back is a better option than trying to hit his legs. Shooting his shield isnt useless if you're 1 of 20 people shooting at him and you make him turn the shield to you to block it. Its much better than shooting at his feet and missing everything entirely. Also, Cap running full tilt in a charge (when he holds his shield up the entire time hes running) is a lot different than when he runs and raises his shield periodically to block shots- you have to slow down to do this usually, even if only slightly- because your form is the regular effective running. When he charges, he is often at such a significant angle that the amount of space where you can see his legs is reduced- leaning forward, you see little of his thighs and more of his shins/feet, which raise up out of view behind him everytime they kick back. All these factors added onto the original comment... yeah its 100% likely that shooting center mass is the best and most likely option

Vibranium has limits to what it can absorb, black panther was warned in his movie. It also can release but that tech wasn't developed at that time. Also comics it's a unique Vibranium adamantine hybrid poured into bowl causing the shape. X-men franchise owned rights to adamantine at that time.

The shield has the appearance of a target. The star in the center being the brightest spot. At a glance, or in stressful moments, the mind and eyes would focus in on a “target”. I think it's mainly that it's not supposed to be effective, for the most part he doesn't want to kill people he wants to knock the out or disarm them. you have to also see from the perspective that he's a super solider, anything he wields can kill any regular man. Best of both worlds, the shield. he can knock some one out by throwing it or bashing it at some one, or like he did to Iron Man, bash the ever living hell to rip off and disarm armors and weapons. accidentally hitting a man with a shield may not kill them, accidentally hitting a man with a sword will most likely kill them.

Normal people can kill people by smacking them with a shield. What makes you think most of those people survive? The blunt force trauma will shatter pretty much any bone it makes contact with and especially in the 40s that would have been death in a combat sitaution where you don't immediately get taken care of. To be honest, yeah especially with those edges it looks like a decent weapon. I would probably want it bigger givem that he uses it to cover from gunfire tho. After thought, Lets say he gets a viking shield thay size, should be about double the weight, but then its supposed to be made with a very light material and again, the cap is supposed to be real strong so shouldn't be a problem. Only disadvantage I can see with a bigger shield is that it would be very much harder to do his classic slap (because of a bigger surface area and air resistance) he could probably hit with the edge and tackle with it

I'll be honest, I was really nervous you would skip how he throws the shield entirely. Thank you for at least mentioning it, because it is such a big part of how he fights! Along with that, I think that throwing also would lend to the smaller size being more useful, because it is much easier to control the flight pattern of a smaller "frisbee" with more technical throws. Great video as always. :)

That is something Shad didn't consider. For IRL fighting, the combination of a rotella, a standard center grip shield, and a sword would be hard to beat. But you would also need to have impeccable fighting technique in order to know what to block with a rotella, what to block with the center grip, and when to get your opponent with your sword. Competence is 9/10ths of fighting. Putting the center grip shield on the adventurer's back could make this a good choice for adventuring. The rotella is on your arm for quick defense, then you can draw your sword, etc. I really like this option.

I think Steve Rogers’s shield is practical. His shield both protects him, and it can be used in offense as well. But I honestly think that such a shield might be genuinely effective in real life, and the reason why is because in the movie the shield is made out of a metal called Vibranium, and such a metal doesn’t exist in real life.

So happy to see you cover Captain America's shield in a video. I've debated this myself with friends and the closest non-comic book representations of shield only combat would be the usage of the shield in 300 by the Spartans or Kar Vastor from the book: Shatterpoint by Matthew Stover who dual wielded shields in combat. Thank you for this Shad. Maybe you cover the effectiveness of twin swords in combat like Keldor/Skeletor from He-man 2002 series? Part of the reason Cap uses a shield is metaphorical. He stands for the virtues the USA represents- or, rather, the goals the USA is supposed to represent. One such virtue is to be a defender of the weak and not an aggressor. In that, a shield is the perfect symbol.

Shield rotation may be an advantage when being attacked by a melee weapon, big disadvantage when attacked by machine gun bullets as is far more common for Captain America.
