Brilliant! When I was a young kid, I'd run home flat out from Sunday Skool, and dive onto the living room rug to watch Thunderbirds, but as a 10yr old. It was UFO, & Space 1999. Also a big fan of Star Trek, the original series. The rest is crap.

Thanks Carl. I was a super fan of these same shows, but most of the time we still had no colour TV. When I saw them in colour, my mind was blown.

@@timosdinkydetailing the colour transition, I don't remember so much, because when I was running home from Sunday school, I must have been 4, or 4.5, and then we were stationed in Germany, so I saw almost no UK TV for 3 years, unless it was a trip to the UK. On one such trip we stayed in a house I was unfamiliar with. My parents knew them, but this was the first time I saw The Protectors, which had me rivited. I remember they were breaking into snow swept biolab. 3 yrs in Germany, tut. Mind you, that was full of interesting stories. You don't have to reply. It can be very time consuming. 👍

Amazing conversion. As a UFO fan, who also had a lot of Dinky toys as a kid, the sickly green colour never sat right with me. It is one of the few times the good people at Dinky got it wrong.
@timosdinkydetailing3 жыл бұрын
I suspect they chose bright colours to sell better to small children. They made a white one later.
@jeffholt94372 жыл бұрын
They got it "wrong" a lot of the time - a blue Thunderbird 2, a green Shado Mobile (with brown wheels) and a green Space 1999 Eagle (with red engine bells) - talk about crimes against children (I'm sure it did me mental damage)!!!!. They did produce a blue Mobile and white Eagle later on but didn't make a white Interceptor to the best of my knowledge (and plenty of boot sales and toy fairs). And, whilst we should be thankful that we got as many toys as we did, it was also unforgivable that they never made the UFO saucer.......

Dinky would use the most plentiful Colour they had at the time, it's the same reason the Tunderbird 2 was Metallic Blue at one point, it was cheaper to use Paint they already had.

'Product Enterprise' made a lovely, accurately coloured and detailed Interceptor die-cast, which came with a very detailed/accurate UFO saucer, back in the early/mid 2000s; they're very collectable and expensive now, if you can find one!! This is actually what I had wished for it looked like when Dinky Toys initially published it. The cardbox art was more like from the show. Why they decided to go for that funky metallic green, I never understood as a child. Well, we had to live with the colours of the seventies. Same with Ed Straker's car in that reflective gold chromelike paint instead of the admittedly rather dull bronze colour. Marketing was one thing, sticking to the original another. Actually, Corgi Toys used the same trick when they issued their first Aston Martin DB5 following the movie Goldfinger: it was in a bright gold bronze instead of the silver grey. It gave them lots of chances to sell the re-issues in different colours for the coming nearly 60 years. Your efforts are by far the best of a restoration-conversion I've seen lately. Thanks for sharing your experience.
@timosdinkydetailing Жыл бұрын
Thank you Marco. I do feel a little guilty for changing the colours from the gaudy Dinky colours, but that's what I mean by "Detailing". Now you have me wanting to do Bond's DB5.

@@timosdinkydetailing Timo, it is always a decision to either restore or "enhance", or as you name it: "detailling". From a collector's POV, all embellishments, even repro boxes are lowering the value of the model/set. I wish, I had not "overplayed" my DB5 in the sixties. In the meantime, I was able to purchase a perfectly restored model of it a few years ago. It cost me an arm and a leg in an EBAY auction, but the restorer really did a super job. One can hardly tell the orginal from the restored one.

@@timosdinkydetailing I have original copies of a 1970's UK sci-fi comic called 'Countdown', that featured comic strip versions of the TV show 'UFO', as well as all of the other Gerry Anderson shows of the time, such as Thunderbirds and Stingray. Anyway, in one issue of Countdown, there is a full page Dinky Toys advert for UFO's interceptor, and the colour depicted in the advert is the correct one of white. There is no green version shown, so Dinky must have intended to do it in white initially, but changed their mind. The comic is dated May 1971.

Thank you Artiexr. I am 60 now too. My parents couldn't afford such an extravagant Dinky toy, especially since they would have had to buy something similar for my brother. It included an Interceptor, a Shado Mobile, an SPV, and a Spectrum Maximum Security Vehicle (Mint, in box). Go figure.

I heard somewhere, that Dinky painted the Gerry Anderson models weird colors not to appeal to adult fans but to better conform with children's imaginations, who were of course the primary customers. Kids would respond better to a green and orange toy than to a white "show faithful" version of the interceptor. They also painted Thunderbird 2 in a bright blue. In any case, I was amazed with your finished product, fantastic job and it looks so much better dressed like the tv version.

Some nice work restoring the hideous Dinky colour scheme. Only a couple of points: the chromed "hood" should be black or gunmetal, and why did you use a pink/cherry red? The stripes were scarlet. The Andersons never designed any of their vehicles, that was mostly down to one of the greatest special effects men in the business, Derek Meddings, along with his design assistant, Mike Trim. One further suggestion: Invest in a decent airbrush and compressor, it makes a huge difference. Try a Harder & Steenbeck Ultra 2024. Designed for beginners, but superb quality.
@timosdinkydetailing5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tips. Didn't even think about the chrome "hood" (bonnet?). I guess it was not clear on the clips. The red I used actually looks a bit different than on video. Not sure if that is Scarlet though. (Scarlet as in the Captain?) I bought an airbrush and compressor, but I'm not entirely happy with it. I will look into the Harder & Steenbeck Ultra 2024 for a future upgrade. Cheers Timo
