I think the thing about the Darkling is he's very polarizing. If the reader has a tendency to like villains, then they will likely like him (me, I have a thing for handsome book villains). If the reader doesn't have that mental issue then they might actually see through his handsome appearance and sadboi persona and see him for his crimes. Unfortunately I am not that enlightened.

Mal embodies loyalty and honesty, whereas Darkling always pursues his own interests, lies, and hurts others without remorse. And to me, at least, there's nothing attractive in evil. But I guess it’s hard to understand the true value of kindness until you face the horrors of someone's dark soul in real life. I wish there were more people like Mal in our world.

the reason the fandom hates Mal so much is because he is codependant to a fault with Alina and holds her back. The Darkling is the literal objective Worst but i don't care for Mal either (granted i haven't seen the show yet, only read the books). IMHO she should've been with Nikolai. The reason the fandom likes the Darkling is because fandoms in general like sexy evil men plus he accepted Alina for being Grisha and was very kind to her in the beginning of the books (yes while he was manipulating her but Fandom Doesn't Care). I think Mal is a decent person, agreed! Most of these tweets are about the book characters anyway. (Did the Kanej "calling Inej an investment while she was literally dying in Kaz's arms" scene happen in the show? or was that just a book thing?)

Mal is wonderful character played brilliantly by Archie, who got alot of harassment for his role. His parts reading were uncomfortable to watch.
