Err, not really. Ocarina of Time had Bongo Bongo, and most relevantly, Majora's Mask had Twinmold which Phalanx is basically almost an exact copy of design-wise - and they aren't exactly obscure games. Franchises like the Tomb Raider series also had relatively large bosses back in the day, with Tomb Raider arguably being more influential of a game in the long run that SotC ever was. This isn't even factoring in games outside of the action genre like FFVII which also had enormous baddies in it. Videogames have been making enormous enemies for a long, long time.

It was incredibly advanced for its time: a number of things, including the advanced fur shaders and the memory needed for open world play with no loading zones, should not have been possible on the PS2.

Considering that its a mostly empty world not really. I mean, there were already several Open World Games at that time looking really good and having a working environement with NPCs, wildlife/animals and so on. SotC doesnt have any of that really, which makes it easier for them to save resources and put them into other aspects of the game. Furthermore the texturequality isnt really astonishing. What the game did ahead of its time was the animationquality and visual effects. And ofcourse the basic concept and idea of the game. The rest not so much. We shouldnt overhype it as much as i like the game.

Out of all the colossi in the game. Phalanx is the only one whose battle area is not in an enclosed space so it should be able to fly everywhere else on the map. Same goes for Avion the bird colossus that one could’ve flown out of its area from the opening, that means there’s some kind of voodoo magic holding them in that position.

Buzz Slinger he can kill you.accually , when he dives into the sand.if you stay in you take a noticeable amount of damage.if you let him dive down a couple of times he will eventually kill you.also. You could be catapulted off by his little roll thing and fall to your death .he. Can also do other things

But it didn't actually wants to kill you. Phalanx constantly is trying to escape, but never attacks directly. Easily the most docile colussus-and you will start asking yourself do slaying these seal living monumentals worth one person.

I've never heard of this game until Dan Olson's video but my god, phalanx just makes me so emotional. there's something so beautiful abt them(it? him? her?), their incomprehensible size and the graceful way they fly. its hard to describe, but it gives me that same feeling dinosaurs give me, being so incredibly huge and impractical, that if I ever somehow got lucky enough to stand next to one, it would completely destroy my sense of self in the wake of something so ginormous. it doesn't make sense for phalanx to be so long, yet they are. and the fact that they are the only non-hostile colossi in the game just adds another layer of tragedy to their death. phalanx glides around with their huge body, trapped in a confined space, and just minds their own business. I just think it's incredible how the biggest colossi only really has defense; their size, and them trying to shake you off of them. yet, wander still insists on taking its life. and god, just the brutal way it collapses down to the earth never fails to get to me. there's no reason something so huge and beautiful should be conquered.

phalanx is the biggest and in my opinion one of the most important colossus in the game and one of the most powerful and hard to kill because it can go under ground fly is the biggest one and maybe the fastest is really hard to stay on and has huge strength

And because it actively doesn't try to harm you. The reason it tries to toss you off is because you're hurting it. It could have easily just decided to smash its back against the ground with you on it, thrash around, crush you against the mountainside, smacked you around with its fins, but it didn't, it was just minding its own business.
