About the game:
Shadow of the Colossus is a 2005 action-adventure game developed by Japan Studio and Team Ico, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. It takes place in a fantasy setting and follows Wander, a young man who enters an isolated and abandoned region of the realm seeking the power to revive a girl named Mono. The player assumes the role of Wander as he embarks on a mission that might entail Mono's resurrection: to locate and destroy the colossi, sixteen massive beings spread across the forbidden land, which the protagonist traverses by horseback and on foot.

I played this on PS2 back in the day, and my mother (who isn’t into video games at all) was completely enthralled with this game and actually sat down to watch me play it. No spoilers, I promise, but the ending really got to her. This is an absolute masterpiece of a game when even my own mother was interested in it.

I remember when this came out, people were convinced there was another colossus that you could fight. Or some other major secret, anyway. People on GameFAQs made a map and broke it into sections, like a big grid, and people on the site made teams and dedicated themselves to each segmented section to try and uncover secrets. It was truly a different time, almost twenty years ago now. I'm gettin' old lol. The PS2 years were such great years to be playing video games.

The character's movement is one of my favorite details in SotC. The stumbling, the somewhat clumsy gait and reckless sword swings, contrasted with the skill on horseback and with the bow - there's a story implied.

A few tips to make things easier: the camera moves automatically, so trying to control it yourself can be disorienting or weird at times. Also, if you let Agro run without steering him, he will stay smoothly on the path. Love this game and cannot wait for the rest!

Colossus = singular. Colossi = plural. The third one's armor broke when he hit the circle in the middle because it was solid rock. Hold X and it will charge your jump/vault and then release to actually do the jump/vault. Helps when trying to get to difficult spots. When you charge the sword to attack weak spots, pay attention to your stamina. There's a wheel that expands out and once it fills the stamina wheel it's fully charged so there's no reason to hang on beyond that point. Play around with Agro, there are lots of little neat tricks and interactions you can find. Amazing game, even more amazing soundtrack!

I adore this game! Some useful things to know: -Some trees have fruit that increase your max health and lizards will increase your max stamina. Those might be reversed, lol -Shrines almost always have lizards nearby or on them -Agro has some hidden tech like a quick turn and you can stand on him while riding and jump off for extra height -You can challenge any colossus you've defeated by approaching it's broken statue to get cool items -You can absolutely use momentum to launch yourself. Kind of an advanced speedrun strat, very useful for time challenges

I screamed a little bit, when I saw this video in my feed. Didn’t expect this so soon. This game holds a special place in my heart. Because for the longest time, I didn’t get the magic. It was cool and all, but it wasn’t special to me. I was a teenager. But in 2022 (now fully adult with some life experience), I went back and it clicked. As a young dude, I was fascinated by the action. As an adult I appreciate the calm moments and the thoughts behind it. This time gives you time to reflect, and I appreciate it. Yeah, let’s celebrate the loud and the quite moments in this game. Watching the intro cutscene with the music gave me full body chills. And during the narration I teared up a little, because it brought the memories back. Please, don’t feel obligated to hype/like/love it. I was hyped, too. But I was because, my expectations were too high. I had to let all of that go, to fully «get» the game, its message. What I found interesting: The jankiness is part of the game. The horse isn’t controlled directly, which adds to the realism. Agro has its own will and personality. You give it direction and it interprets it for itself. The action-packed fights are just one side, the other is the landscape, the animals, the plants, the temples, shrines, bridges. The «emptiness» is part of the experience. Time to reflect. I recommend watching a few videos about it, after you finish it. It adds to the experience. (Playing a game for an audience can be fun, but I hope, you get something out of the game, that is just personal to you. A smal, quiet moment maybe. I don’t know. I probably share too much of my own thoughts.) Team Ico makes special games that are far from mainstream. Not much text, just atmosphere. Bluepoint did a fantastic job with the Remake. I hope, this game gives you something, you have not felt or thought before. And I hope, your audience appreciates some content outside of Souls-like. I am here for it.

This isn't a spoiler, just a bit of a fun fact. The community of fans for this game gave each and every Colossi a name. The three you took down were Valus, Quadratus, and Gaius. I'm genuinely so glad you are loving this game. I had a sneaking suspicion you would love it. I can't wait for you to see what else this game has in store. Also, as a tip. The trees you see all around the world have fruit that you can shoot down. The fruit gives you a permanent health boost. There are also lizards you can kill for more stamina too, but they are a bit tricky to get. Also, yes. The language is completely fiction, though it is comprised of several real languages all mashed together. Thank you for giving such a masterpiece as this a chance.

One of my favorite games. It was amazing playing this during the Ps2 days, in all its 15fps glory! It has one of my favorite soundtracks as well. Can't wait to see the next vids, they really take me back!!

Don't expect too much of a challenge with this one, even on Hard mode it's probably easier than the last seven games you played haha. Nevertheless this game is absolutely essential for its beauty and mysteries.

Glad youre finally playing my favorite game. Didn't know this was happening, but i was waiting for it all the same. Agro likes to steer himself on bridges and through canyon paths. If you steer, youre going to oversteer and Agro will stop. Also on Agro, you can press "Go" and pull back on L3 at the same time. Stationary, when you're moving. If you're moving, you can also double it up. Don't want to spoil what it does if you haven't figured it out already.

absolutely here for the ride! good on you for branching out & trying new games. and you'll likely hear this later on, but there's two more games made by this same studio, Team Ico, which are Ico, and The Last Guardian. now I personally don't know much about Ico, but i know The Last Guardian is utterly spectacular, so if you love SofC by the end of this playthru, TLG will be a must play. tho you may need a break in btwn bc the jank gameplay & camera troubles stay pretty much the same lmao. just a recommendation you may enjoy

Since you like horses I recommend the following 2 movies. "White Mane"--1953 "The Black Stallion"--1979. There's lots of good movies about horses, but these 2 seem to have a magical quality that's different from the rest. Nice to see you are enjoying this masterpiece. There's lots to see & discover if you take the time to explore everywhere & try different things. After 18 years it's still being discussed, scrutinized, studied, & played. That really says something. And that music...awesome!

I just want to point out that for the third colossi the reason the armor broke was because it struck the sword into the big round steel plate in the middle of the platform.

Excellent choice in checking out this game. One of my favorite PS2 games that I played when it first came out. Hope you play ICO, the spiritual predecessor. Note: The third Colossi broke their arm armor when they swung their stone sword and hit the metal circular plate in the middle of the battlefield.

So glad you’re playing this beautiful piece of art ❤ I don’t know if anyone has said this already, but that shrine that you climbed and didn’t know if it did anything - everyone of those shrines has an alter you can kneel at (with R2) I believe and it marks it on your map. There’s also a silver-tailed lizard at every one of those alters you find. If you shoot the tail off of them or kill them, pick up their tail with R2 and you get a small stamina boost for every lizard you find :) If you see big trees out in the open, they often have fruit on them that you can shoot off and pick up. They increase your max health a little bit with each one you pick up as well.
