What a brilliant picture!⭐⭐⭐⭐ How is it that William Powell never made a movie that wasn't great? Everyone in the cast is very good. The story keeps you guessing to the last minute. 👍👍👍

Quite excellent and ahead-of-it’s-time camera work, and script - especially in the courtroom scenes. William Powell enunciates and charms every frame. I’m watching on KZbin, on a smart phone thinking yet again how great movies and life in general were, before the digital age, internet, CGI and AI. Alas…

It's always a pleasant surprise to find a Powell movie I've not seen. The segues were well done, the production values were good for 1930 (a Paramount standard), It was scripted well, dialogue leading to the plot, and the plot was fine. The antagonist persona was excellent. The scenario of Powell injuring himself was histrionic, but so what. I like to see the women in these movies because they're natural; no breast jobs, natural noses, graceful movements, and I see the styles and hairdos of my aunts here. Thanks for posting the movie.

Wow! I'm so happy to see this this one? I want More? What a great story! What an Awful Woman! This... Neighbor... Innocently goes on one Date unbeknownst that she's "kept" and in a Relationship with another Man? She Inculcates him into HER Domestic Dispute by taking the Confrontation into HIS home where he, as a Gentleman, is forced to Protect her? And he ends up in Prison on a Life Sentence for Murder? Come on now? He isn't lacking the Resources for a good Decense Attorney? However, the Key Witnesses here, a guy who happens to see the whole even unfold before his very eyes? As if he was "pushed" from the window? ( Any Cop worth his Salt would be smelling KaKa). Really, Time will tell that in Every Case, Scientific Research has proven that Eyewitness accounts are the most unreliable! This Woman he was protecting, turns out to be a piece of Selfish Narcissistic Crap who is a No- Show ... this should speak volumes? But it doesn't resonate with Investigators, Prosecutors, or Jurors? It's gotta be due to the 1930's and no Court TV or Internet? Great Story-line ! I love the Supporting Actor, and his Character. This was well done. Any William Powell Film is a Hit!

Wow...like Drema Carnathan said, I also thought I had seen all of Powell's movies. This was a real treat..!! But I also was expecting the movie to continue and have that awful woman being forced to tell the truth. This movie was made in 1930 and you could see that the dialogue was forced, with a lot of the actors saying their lines in a loud and rough way...except for Powell's lines; he was always smooth and intelligently spoken. Thanks for this movie..!!

ATTN: CARNATHAN AND MARBLEMAN, AS FANS OF WILLIAM POWELL, I'M RATHER SURPRISED THAT BOTH OF YOU COULD BELIEVE YOU'D "SEEN ALL OF POWELL'S FILMS"! HE HAD BEEN IN MOTION PICTURES SINCE THE EARLY TWENTIES, SO IT'S PRACTICALLY "A GIVEN" THAT, BEING AS MANY OF THESE ARE "LOST", NEITHER OF YOU FOLKS COULD'VE SEEN BUT A FRACTION OF THEM AT MOST!/THIS PRINT HAS GOOD SOUND BUT THE RESOLUTION IS A BIT ON THE FUZZY SIDE; IT'S NO DOUBT A POORLY COPIED 16MM POSITIVE./A FAR SUPERIOR FEATURE, IN MY OPINION -- SAME STAR, SAME YEAR, SAME STUDIO -- IS "STREET OF CHANCE". WHEN I SPOKE TO ITS DIRECTOR, JOHN CROMWELL, HE AT FIRST THOUGHT IT WAS BASED ON GAMBLER NICKY ARSTEIN, FANNY BRICE'S NE'ER-DO-WELL HUSBAND, BUT QUICKLY AGREED WITH ME THAT THE GAMBLER MODEL HAD BEEN ARNOLD ROTHSTEIN; HENCE THE CLIMACTIC DEADLY SHOOTING. WHEN I COMPLIMENTED HIM ON HAVING DIRECTED THIS SUPERB MOTION PICTURE, HE HUMBLY POOH-POOHED ME; BUT IT'S A WORK WORTHY OF BEING REDISCOVERED. PARAMOUNT REMADE IT IN 1937 WITH THE MUNDANE TITLE, "HER HUSBAND LIES"! RICARDO CORTEZ IS VERY GOOD IN THE LEADING ROLE; BUT IT'S NO "STREET OF CHANCE"! PARAMOUNT REUSED THAT TITLE IN 1940 FOR A BURGESS MEREDETH SUSPENSE PICTURE -- ENTERTAINING BUT, AGAIN, NO "STREET OF CHANCE" LIKE THE 1930 RELEASE! SINCERELY, RAY CABANA, JR.

@@raymondcabana1122 Your response was very interesting to read. Obviously, you have a connection and familiarity with these older movies and with the director John Cromwell. @@marbleman52 Hi! Was -- am -- delighted by your response to my comments. I'm almost to the point of not bothering with my sundry online responses, being as they rarely draw a response; and, if they do, it'll be a line or two but hardly anything more. Gone are the days I would get word from everyone from director Josef von Sternberg to comic Soupy Sales! It seems people "can't be bothered". And the Internet being so accessible, a plenitude of idiots (in my opinion) emerge from the proverbial woodwork, and get their asinine views printed. Attacks on mystery writer S.S. Van Dine (creator of Philo Vance) particularly irritate me, be these from pros or amateurs -- even John Loughery's biography of Van Dine was a hatchet job, yet garnered an Edgar from the Mystery Writers of America! So much for awards, which, more often than not, are no more than reflective of personal taste, which, unfortunately, isn't subject to being quantified. I'm a freelance writer, mostly film history. Also a collector. My print of "The Line-Up" (1929 talkie short) can be viewed on KZbin's "Geno Cuddy's House of Rare Films"; it's believed to be the only existing copy. Thanks! Gratefully, Ray

@@raymondcabana1122 Good morning. I agree with you about it being frustrating when trying to have a discussion here in the comments section and all we get is a grunt or two that adds nothing to the topic. A grunt is not a discussion. I also get frustrated when I see someone responding to a comment and doesn't put the other person's handle first so we all know to whom the comment is directed. Now in all fairness I will admit that I do occasionally respond with just an "I agree" or something similar. It all depends on the topic and how the discussion is going. Ah, yes, Soupy Sales. I am 71 and I remember watching him on T.V. back in the 50's. I think it's neat that you used to have some contact with him. You are a freelance writer. That explains how you write so well. I like it. I enjoy the writing process myself and enjoy arranging the words and sentences and making them flow. I am not a professional writer, just someone who has always enjoyed writing. What a great flick. (The hero was guilty of manslaughter, not really murder, and shouldn't have gone to prison. "The Joint" might not have been so bad in the '30s at the height of the Depression. At least, there were meals, clothing, and a roof to live under.) These 90+ year movies really tell the story of a very different era and people in America's past. Interesting, ending could've been much better.
