I love "My Man Godfrey," too! It was released in 1936, and it is interesting to note that William Powell had been married to Carole Lombard, his co-star, from 1931-33. They were able to remain friends and sure worked well in that movie. Neither of them had remarried at the time. (She married Clark Gable in 1939, & he married Diana Lewis in 1940.) Sadly, Carole died in a plane crash in 1942, age 33.

Honestly, more than the political messages themselves, the bigger message I took from this lovely film is how two men w/opposing political views can still support, respect, and encourage one another in the course of it. It's such a sweet, beautiful notion---one that has disappeared in the diatribes of furied faces in today's political news. Kindness and decorum has become a lost, unpracticed art. This movie brought a tear to my eye.

How refreshing to see William Powell, once again, with an excellent cast, and a quite different premise for a movie. Not even a thought of inserting a curse word in the script, or a scene with naked actors, but a plot involving love and human decency in the midst of family, political debate and stable minds, while, as always, highlighting the classes.
@l.w.i7478

What’s so bad about naked actors? If it fits the film, and they’re of age, naked actors can be a tearjerker, a laugh, a shock, sexy, or just plain beautiful. I respect every actor who decides to unrobe for a good role, in service to the role. We were born naked, and we go naked (when the Musselin shirt has rotted), nakedness is natural.

These old movies on KZbin are such a joy to watch, even more so during the current lockdowns. I no longer watch mainstream TV the news is depressing, the programmes seem to be all sex & violence and as for reality TV complete rubbish. This movie reminded me of the days when Cossack Dancers performed on Sunday night at the London Palladium, I can’t imagine the same thing being on the Rubbish Factor.

@@redrb26dett Hitler was a monster not because of the holocaust but because he and Germany emerged as the most powerful rival to British economy and the greatest threat to British power. Germany's economic success and military prowess posed a serious challenge to British hegemony. The Brits would've cared very less for Hitler even if he had committed massacres and genocides all around the continent. But it was only because of his challenge to the British supremacy that the Brits began a campaign against him. Churchill recognized how serious of a threat he was to Britain. A similar situation is arising as regards today's US and China relations. One way or another it will lead to a massive war, likely a third world war...down the line.

Recently, after I mentioned how I love old movies, they said it's fake and romanticized. I don't think younger people understand that these movies are not fake, but an example of what men should strive to be. Fair play, honesty with ones self and the ability to agree to disagree, in the case of this movie. I love these movies and even now, I try to emulate these heroes on the screen. In their personal lives, all of them had their issues, but their body of work showed us how they wished we all could be.

I am a William Powell fan and have only heard of this movie recently. It was so nice to see it! There is a class to these old movies that does not exist today - or for several years, actually. It seems that today's movies don't rely on an actor's abilities as much, or skill with directing or cinematography. Maybe I'm just biased because I dearly love the movies from the 30's through 60's...Anyway, thank you for making it possible to watch a gem from the past.

Absolutely Delightful Film! I never heard of this or have seen this one and loved it! Thank you so much for sharing it. The Baroness, played by Annabella is so Beautiful! [ see note].More so than any of the Actors of this time period. All of the Actors played their characters so convincingly, drawing the audience in and immersing us into this wonderfully written play. Bravo! Note: Anabella, was the stage name for French born Actor/ Actress Suzane Georgette Chapentier. Born 14, July 1907 in Saint Mauredes Fosses, France. She was an accomplished actor in France when Hollywood discovered her. Her first marriage lasted only two years, 1930-1932 when her husband died. They had a daughter, Anne, born in April 1928. Anabella remarried in 1934 to another French Actor, Jean Murat. Yet this was when Anabella's career would take off as she was going to sign a contract with Twentieth Century Fox Studio's, then run by Darryl F. Zanuk. She starred with Henry Fonda in 1937 a British film under TCF contract named; "Wings of the Many" She would soon go to Hollywood to co-star with Tyrone Power in Suez, where inevitably they would fall in love and against Zanuck's offer to give her a "Multi-Million Dollar Movie Deal, tht would take her overseas, because he didn't want Power to marry anyone, she refused! What the executive did next is appalling! Tyrone and Anabella went to France where she obtained her divorce from Jean Murat. They got married and honeymooners in Rome. Zanuck was so angry he stopped casting Anabelle in movies and took this a,step further! Because she was under contract, he wouldn't even loan her out to other Studios asking for her? Meanwhile, WWII was in full swing and Tyrone signed on and left! But not before making two trips to France to first retrieve Anabella's Mother, who moved in with them, and before returning Anabella's brother was shot and killed by the Nazi's! She was able to get her daughter Anne and return. Tyrone adopted Anne legally. There's more to the story.... It's disgusting how much power Hollywood held over their Actors lives. If any mistakes were made, they are my own in spelling or interpretation.

In 1931 a Detroit heiress ran away from home with the family chauffeur... and built a mansion in Santa Monica where they entertained lots of Hollywood stars and producers. If you ever watch Beverly Hills Cop- the mansion they have the shootout in at the end is the house they built. This and similar movies around this period were inspired by this couple’s real life.
