I'm pretty sure the pillars only planted the seeds that would become the tree. So, they knew that the tree would help future generations, but I doubt that would mean they'd know everything about it.

QUick theory: some form of the Tree of Harmony existed before the pillars but the pillars used their magic to strengthen it to where it is now

I agree that the point of Shadows was just a remake of King Sombra. although in my prospective King Sombra was the better villain because of his strategy and insurance with his safeguards, influence, and careful planning along with the alternate timeline showing of his success and putting Equestria in a Perpetual state of War.

Okay, I am going to defend Sombra a bit here since I disagree with the 'waiting part' and the 'no character'. For me, Sombra was my fav part of the premiere (after the conclusion). We rarely see a villain who actually succeeded in something and Sombra actually did by enslaving the Crystal Empire and even though he was defeated, he still took the Empire with him. Plus, even after the Empire returned, he was there long enough to have a psychological effect on the Crystal ponies. He didn't just 'wait', his dark magic was always trying to get into the Empire, and that's why Cadence had to constantly block him out. He also hid the Crystal heart and without Spike there to help Twilight, she WOULD have failed! So in my eyes, Sombra wasn't an incompetent villain unlike Crystalis and Discord, who fell flat in the end due to their overconfidence. *Takes a deep breath* Okay there, I've said my peace. *Hears Stardust's comments about Sombra* Thank you Stardust. I never fully cared about villain backstories as long as they get the job done. *Hears about the Journal of the Two Sisters* I would only count that piece as Soft Canon now, especially since the S6 premiere when they made a mess by implying that Luna and Celestia aren't natural born alicorns. About the Tree of Harmony, I always felt that an explanation was needed on how it got there. One of my things about any fictional setting is that you do need an explanation on why things are the way they area. Like how did the Tree come into existence in the first place? So it was nice to get an explanation for that. I am actually with Loony as far as rating goes. I actually ranked this finale in the middle, it was good but there were a few major flaws that brought it down. My biggest gripe was Twilight in the first part. She pretty much acted like RD in Daring Don't, her fangirling made her act like an idiot, even though it was in character. I have heard people ask why didn't anyone else besides Starlight, question Twilight, and my answer is actually another question- when have the Mane 5 or anyone else question Twilight's authority when it comes to Magic knowledge? Twilight was always the leader of the pack and took charge, at least with the Mane 5 and I honestly can't recall a time when her authority was questioned, at least amongst them. But yeah the other problem was something ya'll addressed, there was a lot more talking and a lot less DOING. I did enjoy a lot of things though, like Starlight and the Dazzlings segment. Anyway, great collab you two, nice to see Stardust return! The original Queen of Boop!

the best answer I have is the books and comics and cartoon are separate canons who only some times connect to each other. The pillars were not even an idea in the writers head when the Journal of the Two sisters was written so they can't be mentioned there or before. Its like saying "Why wasn't Sunset Shimmer in Twilight's flash back to magic school in lesson zero?" - bad example maybe- point is Starlight, sunset, Rockhoof, they are not mentioned in the 1st thee seasons of lore and back story and world building since they didn't exist yet. That's why Celestia and Luna don't mention the Pillars in there journals.

So Sombra was a threat but had little character. The Pony of Shadows had character, but wasn't much of a threat. Why is it so hard for the writers to create a villain that's a threat and has a great character?
