I once looked at the meaning behind this song. It's basically describing one's descent and isolation from humanity. Hence being "Almost Dead to the World". Shadow, now willing to destroy the world with Black Doom, is against humanity as a whole. In that way, he's separating himself from them AND betraying all for what he was made for. Isolating himself from Maria's sprit, as well. It's insane how well it pairs up.

don’t get me wrong this is a great song, but this is exactly why a bunch of people dropped shadows as a character he had great character development Too, he even learned to respect sonic and then only 4 years later and then Just.. this.

Trauma, amnesia, and gaslighting can do a lot to someone. Having known a lot of people with PTSD, it's honestly not unbelievable to me that Shadow would revert a bit from where he was at the end of SA2. Things get worse before they get better... but the only way out is through. That's the ultimate (ha) lesson of Shadow's arc when taken as a whole, IMO.
