Yeah except all the enemies (whether theyre GUN soldiers, mechs, robots, demons, or alien) you shoot either have guns, swords or deadly powers of their own and are trying very hard to kill you. Its not like hes shooting a bunch of unarmed innocent civilians. And hes not the only sonic character to use weapons. Sonic uses a sword at one point and tails uses both rockets (in game from his mech) and a laser pistol (in some of the comics), amy uses a big ass hammer, omega uses chainguns that fire bullets, blaze can burn her enemies alive, rouge uses bombs or mines. So how is it somehow okay for all the other characters to use weapons or powers to kill theur enemies but not shadow? You see the inconsistency here?

Shadow was made in a way that made him the perfect foil to sonic. Shadow had an entire character arc in just one game and Sega went to extra mile to make him more and more as a person in heroes and in the mediocre shadow the hedgehog game. But after 06 he became a meme. A joke. He's just edgy for the sake of being edgy and just doesn't have a personality besides snarky remarks and just being a jerk. The idw comics really did a good job on him but it just seems that after shadow the hedgehog Sega truly just stopped caring about their characters and just had them be sonics buddies. "Sonic Adventure 2" and "Sonic '06" did Shadow grand work making him his own being, "Shadow The Headgehog" provided good lore (Albeit mangled and spread out...), "Sonic Heroes" at least kept him a little more mellow and snarky, and everything with Team Dark is still gold. All that said, he's become nothing of note nowadays. I don't even know *why* he's Sonic's rival: Did they just forget Metal?

I wouldn't consider "Shadow the Hedgehog" lore to be good. They completely botched the original vision of Shiro Maekawa (writer of SA2, Heroes and (mostly) '06 stories) and replaced it with Takashi Iizuka's fanfiction. Also, it's sad no one mentions Sonic Battle as a good example of Shadow's character. It truly expands on the story established in SA2.

I had this idea that I wished was canon. IMO, I think Shadow should have died in SA2, but I could see why he was brought back. However, I think there is a possible compromise. What if Shadow really did die in SA2? And the shadow that we see post SA2 is just a clone made by Robotnik, hence why he was in Eggman’s base in Sonic Heroes. Maybe Shadow the Hedgehog could have expanded on this. Eventually, leading to a story moment where Shadow finally accepts his existence as a clone, but finds a way to cope with it. That cope being able to do the one thing the real one wasn’t able to..... to continue living and following his own path regardless of his clone origins.

To think with Forces instead of that... THING we could have had Tails and the others playable. Either on set stages for each character, or being able to select which character you wanted on those stages that weren't Sonic's. Plus it'd make the whole friendship talk feel abit more genuine to have his actual friends by his side, and not some random, no name Joe who he's only known for 5 minutes and will never be seen again. God I hate Forces, especially with what it did to Tails, and not actually letting him do anything besides being a tool to make Classic Sonic look strong. It's been 14 years since Sonic 06 and I think we are long overdue the other characters to be playable again in a mainline 3D Sonic game, beyond the once in a blue (outsourced) moon moments like Boom and Mania. End Sonic or bust and bring back the other characters!

My Favorite part about Shadow's 06 story was when he went to the past with Silver and was almost a mentor figure to him, Imagine if in the games or a side story in comics where Silver grows from his naive self to a much wiser character and Shadow allows himself to be more vulnerable. The same thing that happened with most Sonic characters unfortunately Shadow had a deep, conflicted motivation that gave him an air of mystique and his vengeful attitude made him a great foil to Sonic. Then when he was revived with a more angsty and aimless direction it, like you said, killed his momentum. He became one note and more or less a punchline by the fans until it spilled over to the games. Now he's just an edgy pallete swapped Sonic. Like now how Amy is just the "obsessive fangirl" or Tails is the "kiddy tech specialist" - just caricatures of their basic traits when they all have much more to them

The director of SA2 stated that he would have had Shadow pretty much roam the earth helping others in service and honor of Maria. Unlike, Sonic who helps when he sees someone in trouble, but is usually just seeking adventure, Shadow is out there LOOKING for people to help. Archie comics and even Sonic Battle, a goddamned fighting game handled him very well. Him trying not to see himself as a weapon and convincing the likes of E-102 Gamma, Omega, to built a team to save people and make the world better. In Sonic Battle, he tells him he is more than a weapon and can live his life as a sentient being. If anything, that comes across almost more heroic than Sonic himself. His relationship with Rouge and Omega, although started situationally, evolved to what we saw in 06, where they actually look and feel like friends. But nope, can't have that. Gotta keep that Super Hedgehog bargain sale going (not that I hate Silver, but still)...

In defense of SMBZ: Shadow acted that way there because Mecha Sonic had killed both Rouge and Omega so he was desperate to avenge them and prevent any other person from becoming Mecha Sonic's next victim. We can see that in EP 8 when he lashes out and Sonic tries to get through him to the point he's on verge of crying, with flashbacks of what happened. In the clip of the never finished EP 9 Shadow also regrets leaving Sonic's group and how he acted, but tries to put that behind in order to face Mecha Sonic. Alvin also said that he wish he made Shadow look less edgy than he did in the series and that in the remake(if he does make the remake) he wants to correct that.

See I disagree with you here as this would eccentrically just be throwing potential way out of fear that the Character gets ruined latter on. Beside SA2 already took way to much of SA1's plot elements for it self and so also copying Gamma's permanent Death for Shadow always felt kinda cheap to me. Beside I often hear people talk about Shadow but hardly ever anyone about how SA2 in general tried to pretend it never happened with Rouge wanting to go into retirement, Eggman wanting to go back to doing things him self and leaving his Grand father in the past and the big finally in space undoing all of GUN's wants to hunt Sonic. And Yet no one complains about Rouge still being around doing stuff or Gerald being every now and than used as a plot element (like in Rivals 2 or Battle). Its all about Shadow for some odd reasons.

Trailing off from shadow, I have to admit that I never really was happy with the direction the franchise took after unleashed. Believe it or not, I always loved this game. It's been done to death that this game is the worst in the franchise when that title should go to any one of the 2010 games excluding mania. Generations, lost world, colors, and forces are pretty bad games in my book because they took away what made sonic unique. So with all the characters being dumbed down and given the spotlight for fan appeal, it will never amount to previous era's of sonic. A lot of fans tend to forget that Sega's sonic was their answer to Nintendo's mario. While sonic is cool and gritty, mario is innocent and colorful. The list goes on. Everyone saying that it's just a fast blue anthropomorphic hedgehog fighting an egg shaped moron really shows the bias some people have towards sonic because he's so much more than that. Everyone often forgets that in a short summary, it's a battle of nature against technology. Sonic practically brought on the trope "cartoon character, serious world". I'm not saying the franchise should have hyper edge, just an exact amount meshed together with lighthearted moments, because the series knew when to balance out it's comedic moments and more serious one's. I want an engaging sonic story. It doesn't always have to be dark and certainly not funny, just engaging. A lot of people give me flack for saying I like the comics and satam cartoon.

People act like Pontac and Graf are the sole problem with the writing in the series. When in actuality, they are only part of it. Sonic Forces; especially the infamous treatment of Tails, was mainly written by Sega of Japan. Heck, even before 2010, you get a sense that they didn't know what do with characters like Shadow or Rouge anymore after Sonic 06.

I agree with the majority of this video, but I don't think it was a bad idea to bring Shadow back. It's just how they brought him back that was the issue. There was still so much potential in him as a character. And no, Shadow being violent, doing things his own way, and seeking revenge when he sees fit isn't uncharacteristic of him. Sonic is optimistic, where as Shadow is cynical. More grounded in reality than Sonic. He is the depressing reality of every situation. He is the result of somebody after knowing great and traumatic loss.

You're onto something. After Sonic 06 the devs clearly wanted to make it into this Mickey Mouse franchise where you can just take a character that exists in a vacuum and make a nice, simple one-off story. This means that sonic canon is effectively finished, they have no interest in keeping up with a single continuity, and what this means for Shadow is that he is now permanently at the beginning of his arc in SA2, not the end of it. Everything that comes now is alternate options to what happened in the SA era, not something following it. The problem with fanon is that fans keep wanting characters to exist at their apex, like an old man on his death bed with life already finished and nothing to look forward to, so that the fan can be an observer and gush about what a respectable life that was. This leads to constant disappointment or inevitable disappointment, because there simply is no more story to tell and the character is only liked as the vacuum-sealed version of itself, whose story was already told. Some people pose the solution that Shadow should have died in SA2, but that doesn't change the fact they would still complain about Sonic now being what it is anyway. I mean, Chip came and went in his own game exactly that way, but that didn't solve anything with Sonic's PR problems.

how i'd have written shadow: 1.) sorry, but i would have personally brought him back - promise i'll treat him properly 2.) next game; sonic heroes - i like what was done with him. he wasn't above smiling and having friendly competition with sonic, yet kept the attitude, introversion and subdued nature that made himself, himself. it built team dark and i think that's perfect. i would have it so offscreen or during the game they do tell shadow about his past, and maybe not have him run around trying to figure it out- and rather spend his time bonding with team dark 3.) sonic battle was nice to shadow, but he was convinced he was a 'weapon of war' - making heroes very redundant. i would omit that whole plotline and give him some other way to relate to gemerl, and get involved with the story 4.) shadow the hedgehog game - black doom comes down; cast members take on the black arms (yes, *including* shadow. maybe that's when he joins gun) - maybe after the first game black doom approaches shadow and gives him a tempting proposition. shadow maybe takes on a bit of a flat arc, where he influences the world around him (like black knight maybe), levels perhaps based on helping people against black arms, with the end goal of collecting the emeralds to take out black doom - not a developmental arc for shadow, but rather evidencing how much growth he'd made, and that he was never going to fold to black doom - black doom plants the seeds of doubt in shadow's head that humanity will exterminate him, just as he did to him, to lead onto 06. perhaps have GUN and other humans evidencing the fear mephiles speaks of 5.) 06 - yeah keep that shit the same bro. only difference is, now shadow can think back to STH to validate mephiles' claims 6.) after 06, shadow has grown fully - he's confident in humanity and in himself - and knows that he'll fight for what he believes in regardless of his opposition. if i'm being honest, that's the best sendoff for the character. shadow doesn't really need to be a major part of any stories after that; playing his role as a GUN agent. he can definitely still be playable, just not a locus point. e.g, maybe unleashed wouldn't have him playable, but he is mentioned once - so maybe show the effect dark gaia is having on the rest of the world?

I actually have something of an explanation for this, though I don't think everyone is going to like it. Tolerance. In the sense of building up a tolerance to a drug. Your character starts off with some trait or quirk, they're cocky or short tempered or smart or whatever, and at first it's all fresh and new (relatively speaking) because the audience is still learning the specifics of the characters, their world, their relationships, etc. But as they keep being exposed to the same "level" of that trait, they build up a tolerance to it. You expect the cocky character to crack wise, the short tempered character to start a fight, the smart character to say some technobabble and build things, so it stops being as exciting. So the writers crank it up a bit, the cocky character's even cockier than you thought, the smart guy is even more brilliant. But then the audience acclimates to that, and you're back to the same problem, so what do you do? You crank the knob again. As you lean on and exaggerate the trait more and more, it can begin to overtake the character's identity. Personally I feel like the accusation gets thrown around a little too often, though. There's a time for subtlety and more down-to-earth characters, but it's not inherently wrong to go big and let characters have their extremes (both positive and negative) either, depending on the kind of story. It's easy to claim Flanderization if a character ends up being taken in a direction you don't want, that emphasizes traits you don't like. So Shadow changed because I feel like Sega were beginning to run out of ideas on what to do with him, and since he was obviously too popular to drop, they just cranked up the edge to help keep him relevant. For newer players, it's fine since they don't have to look at a game from over 15 years ago to understand who Shadow is, but it sucks for older fans who grew up with the character and have to watch him be morphed into a simplified, and parody version of themself. Its a times changing thing sadly, it sucks, but it is what it is.

As much as I loved him in heroes with finding out who he is, his character was build on his redemption and death. If he hadn't died in SA2, we wouldn't be memorable to this extend. I think the concept of him having a """gun""" could've been okay if it was just the alien weapons that the Black Arms used, sorta like Halo. First because it would make sense, what can a normal gun do for Shadow? Nothing, a bullet to a chaos spear is like a rock to a rocket launcher. Alien weapons meanwhile are supposed to be extremely advanced and able to atomize stuff, that's useful. Second because of the meaning, guns usually dont appear in the Sonic series and the one time one did it killed Maria, they're a symbol of absolute evil that I dont see Shadow using but that would make sense that the main villain would use something similar and try to convince Shadow that his weapon is "different" from the humans's to make him use it as part of his atempt of corrupting him. Third because the alien tech from Black Doom look kinda cartoonish, more artistically similar to other objects from the Sonic universe and concerned parents would be way less upset if Shadow was not holding something that looks like a real gun. And finally because it would look cool without making Shadow look even more like a edgelord after that game.

Something from the current Shadow I really hate is the fact that he's so full of himself and thinks he's better than everyone else. Constantly saying "I'm the ulimate lifeform, you need to respect me!" and honestly, I have just entered the sonic fandom recently. So the first time I know Shadow is the current edgelord we know now. But after doing some research about him and watching analysis videos like this (this is very well done by the way!), I found myself to much rather prefered the old Shadow. Because a first glance of his design some people would think "Wow I bet his character is dark and edgy" (because of the black red pallete is automatically considered to be edgy now) which is somewhat a true statement to the current Shadow. But the past Shadow as I know is selfless; caring; humble; and kind, arguably something you wouldn't think of when seeing him for the first time. Also! Why did they make him think so little of his friends? As if other people are just a tool or an inconvenience to him. Even though he had really good chemistry with Rouge and Omega. Heck, he even had good chemistry with Sonic, seeing him as an equal and even had some friendly(?) rivalry banter with him. Now he just become this petty brat when he lost to him. Sega really did do him dirty :(

I honestly didn't mind shadows character in his game. The only thing wrong is how we portray his actions in his game. The mulitple endings was actually good in terms of a video game. The true ending at least had shadow getting some of his answers and putting his past behind him (again) to save the world once more for maria. His game was only edgy for bad words and guns. 6:53 I dont exactly view him like that Shadow in the archie comics and in some part of the idw comics actually is really deep. In the idw comics he wants to KILL Mr tinker(eggman but with amnesia) because shadow doesnt want eggman to rise back to power and cause another incident like he did in sonic forces. Its dark YES but in this case shadow wants to take upon the burden of being a killer to keep others safe. He even backs down with sonic reasons with him. Theres too much shadow content from archie to go over but shadow has been shown making mistakes, learning from them, and bettering himself. To me, every main character needs a foil to them For Megaman-protoman For X-zero For goku- vegeta And fir sonic-shadow or knuckles Shadow may be "darker" than sonic but I believe that's warranted Sonic is always around nature, absorbing the positivity and freedom from it, meanwhile shadow works with and for gun, having to do missions and other work. Not only that but shadow IS older than sonic, and over 100 years of life can make someone more jagged and pragmatic(ask wolverine lol). My point in saying this is that sonic is optimistic, while shadow is more logical and realistic than sonic is. It's not a bad thing hes like that as it adds another perspective in the mix. Having a darker character than the main character doesnt automatically make them a vegeta tho, some characters not only came 1st, but did it BETTER than vegeta does. For example, Zero from the Megaman X series was a better Piccolo than the Namekian has ever been, and from that, spawned his own game series with many heartfelt moments as he stepped into the spotlight(as even in the X series, he was looked at as cooler than Megaman X, who himself is gohan, but a more tortured soul than the saiyan is)

Honestly, I feel it's less the fact that he was brought back, and more HOW. When I went back through the mid 2000s era, I felt like the game that should have brought him back, shouldn't have been Sonic Heroes, or Shadow the Hedgehog, and Black Doom I personally think should NOT have existed. Shadow in the games is what scourge in the comics is, the pressing issue that " 1 bad day and u can become just like ME" and sonic realizes that, if sonic doesnt keep up his positive attitude, the weight of what he has on his shoulders would CRUSH him. Shadow isnt "crushed" per se but he DOES have his fair share of demons he has to combat to keep going. His own game shows us that he has not only the blood of a vengeful alien race inside him, but the conflicting views of gerald robotnik as well, who at one point wanted humans dead and was gonna make the arc collide with earth and kill everyone, but also created the arc to DESTROY the black arms and created shadow to protect the earth from them AND cure a rare disease. That in itself is far more complicated than what sonic is dealing with internally. But both hedgehogs persevere as the world they love depends on them. Shadow is choosing nurture over nature, and fights constantly against it. It's where he earns my respect.

The point of the Shadow the Hedgehog game was to show that Shadow could become literally anything, good or bad. The true hero story and final story of the Shadow game (mostly) got his character right. Though I like the idea of Shadow being an introverted rival to Sonic, I disapprove him being a too edgy Vegeta clone.

Knuckles got done wrong and so did Shadow. They both have a shit ton of potential. Sega just didn't know what the hell to do with him.
