ABOUT THIS GAME
Final Fantasy 14 or FFXIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods' blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

Thancred def grew on me during shadowbringers: even picked up a gunblade bc of how proud i was of his journey as a character

From day 1 I didn't have a great opinion on him, but over time and with Shadowbringers it really made me like him. I was actually feeling gutted when I thought he might have died.

Yeah I dunno why Ran'jit's such a badass, and I really dunno what changed to turn him from a party wipe to a solo dub, but it clearly was a blend of custody battle and Wendy's parking lot brawl

I'll say the big theory but it's kinda spoilers so I'll put it in "read more" The prevailing theory is that Ranjiit is a shard of Godbert Manderville, hence his incredible strength. The reason the WoL is able to defeat him at the end is *because* you are solo; with your allies around, it has always felt pretty clear that the WoL holds back, making sure their allies are okay. This checks out with how the Echo actually works (having premonitions of coming fights until you see the path that leads to victory. That's how wipes are explained in lore.) So the WoL doesn't want to engage in that fight, despite the fact they could possibly win, because at that point they'd just be seeing their closest friends die over and over, and right then survival was a far more important objective.

@@CanisMythson "The prevailing theory is..." No it absolutely is not. That's absolute nonsensical fan wank. Doesn't even track with what we know of the Manderville's origins. They wouldn't have been around to become sundered. Ranjit is strong because Ranjit is strong. That's it.

Ran'Jit is old, before Vauthry the city of Eulmore also actively fought Sin Eaters and he's raised, trained and fought with so may Minfillias that he feels responsible for them and eventually the compounding (if not bottled up) grief from constantly losing these girls to violent death have him side with Vauthry and have her locked up. She was imprisoned where Thancred found her for her own safety. At least... according to Ran'Jit. Thancred is also protective, but because it's Minfillia and he STILL feels super-guilty for what he did and responsible for her. And at the same time torn because this Minfillia is not 'his' version. But he tries... And at least here in this trial he finally changes for the better.

Yeah he learns to let go of the old Minfillia and start treating Ryne like her own person. 👌 Also I now understand what Ranjit’s line meant when you fight him in Eulmore, the one about I can see my girls now.

Thancred v Ran'jit is one of the best duties in the game and honestly what changed a lot of my feelings towards ShB Thancred. Man fucked up hard but when it counted he pulled his finger out and did his best.

I really hated the way they did this, it killed the stakes for this expansion entirely to go so far into "he's totally dead" and then pull out at the last minute. Cool moment, but an unpleasant aftertaste.
